The effect of viscous damping on stability of beam resting on an elastic foundation subjected to a dry friction force is analytically studied. The beam resting on an elastic foundation subjected to dry friction force is modeled for simplicity into a beam resting on Kelvin-Voigt type foundation subjected to distributed follower load. In particular, the effects of four boundary conditions (clamped-free, clamped-pinned, pinned-pinned, clamped-clamped) on the system stability are considered. The critical value and instability type of columns on the elastic foundation subjected to a distributed follower load is investigated by means of finite element method for four boundary conditions. The elastic foundation modulus, viscous damping coefficient and boundary conditions affect greatly both the instability type and critical load. Also, the increase of damping coefficient raises the critical flutter load (stabilizing effect) but reduces the critical divergence load (destabilizing effect).
This paper presents a modeling method for the vibration analysis of rotating cantilever beams considering the elastic foundation effect. Mass and stiffness matrices are derided explicitly by considering coupling effect between stretching and bonding motion. Numerical results show that the bending direction elastic foundation stiffness influences the vibration characteristics significantly in practical range of beam configuration. The ranges of elastic foundation stiffness to avoid the dynamic buckling are also presented. The method presented in this paper can be used to predict the variations of natural frequencies of rotating cantilever beams with elastically restrained root.
study aims to derive a rational method for the analysis of the farm silo supported on an elastic foundation in which it is assumed that the reaction pressure of the soil at a point is proportional to the deflection at that point. In order to investigate the effects of an elastic foundation on the behaviour of the structures on it, the analysis of the farm silo resting on an elastic foundation was compared with the solution that the ground support may be assumed uniform (which was obtained from part I of this paper). To calculate the deformation of an elastic foundation, Boussinesq's solution which allows an interaction of the various parts of ground was adopted. In this case, the foundation was treated as a superparametric element additionally. In the evaluation of an element stiffness matrix, Gauss quadrature' was used. In above numerical integration, 3-point rule for the farm silo wall and the footing was introduced and 2-point rule for the evaluation of a reaction between the footing and the elastic foundation was adopted. The stresses of a farm silo on an elastic foundation were smaller than those which the distribution of contact pressure between the footing and the soil is assumed uniformly. Since the differences of stresses were remarkable in PS structures than RC structures, it is desirable that designers take into account the effect of an elastic foundation for the case of PS structures. It can be noted that while the effect of an elastic foundation was more conspicuously observed in near of the ground, the value of stresses at far from the soil was little affected by an supported soil.
This paper discussed on the effect of an intermediate support on the stability of elastic material subjected to dry friction force. It is assumed in this paper that the dry frictional force between a tool stand and an elastic material can be modeled as a distributed follower force. The elastic material on the friction material is modeled for simplicity into an elastic beam on Winkler-type elastic foundation. The stability of beams on the elastic foundation subjected to distributed follower force is formulated by using finite element method to have a standard eigenvalue problem. The first two eigen-frequencies are obtained to investigate the dynamics of the beam. The eigen-frequencies yield the stability bound and the corresponding unstable mode. The considered beams lose its stability by flutter or divergence, depending on the location of intermediate support.
Employment of the wave propagation approach with the combination of Pasternak foundation equation gives birth to the shell frequency equation. Mathematically, the integral form of the Lagrange energy functional is converted into a set of three partial differential equations. A cylindrical shell is placed on the elastic foundation of Pasternak. For isotropic materials, the physical properties are same everywhere, whereas the laminated and functionally graded materials, they vary from point to point. Here the shell material has been taken as functionally graded material. The influence of the elastic foundation, wave number, length and height-to-radius ratios is investigated with different boundary conditions. The frequencies of length-to-radius and height-to-radius ratio are counter part of each other. The frequency first increases and gain maximum value in the midway of the shell length and then lowers down for the variations of wave number. It is found that due to inducting the elastic foundation of Pasternak, the frequencies increases. It is also exhibited that the effect of frequencies is investigated by varying the surfaces with stainless steel and nickel as a constituent material. MATLAB software is utilized for the vibration of functionally graded cylindrical shell with elastic foundation of Pasternak and the results are verified with the open literature.
This paper presents a study of geometric nonlinear forced vibration of carbon nano-tubes (CNTs) reinforcement composite plates on nonlinear elastic foundations. The plate is bonded with piezoelectric layers. The von Karman geometric nonlinearity assumptions with classical plate theory are employed to obtain the governing equations. The Galerkin and homotopy perturbation method (HPM) are utilized to investigate the effect of carbon nano-tubes volume fractions, large amplitude vibrations, elastic foundation parameters, piezoelectric applied voltage on frequency ratio and primary resonance. The results indicate that the carbon nano-tube volume fraction, applied voltage and elastic foundation parameters have significant effect on the hardening response of carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (CNTRC) plates.
The free vibration characteristics of cylindrical shells on inclined partial elastic foundations are investigated by an analytical method. The cylindrical shell is partially surrounded by the elastic foundations, these are represented by the Winkler or Pasternak model. The area of elastic foundation is not uniform and varies along the axial direction of the shell. The motion of shell is represented by first-order shear deformation theory(FSDT) to account for rotary inertia and transverse shear strains. The governing equation is obtained using the Rayleigh-Ritz method and a variation approach. To validate the present method, the numerical example is presented and compared with the present FEA results. The numerical results reveal that the elastic foundation has significant effect on vibration characteristics.
In this paper, an analytical approach for the free vibration analysis of spiral stiffened functionally graded (SSFG) cylindrical shells is investigated. The SSFG shell is resting on linear and non-linear elastic foundation with damping force. The elastic foundation for the linear model is according to Winkler and Pasternak parameters and for the non-linear model, one cubic term is added. The material constitutive of the stiffeners is continuously changed through the thickness. Using the Galerkin method based on the von $K\acute{a}rm\acute{a}n$ equations and the smeared stiffeners technique, the non-linear vibration problem has been solved. The effects of different geometrical and material parameters on the free vibration response of SSFG cylindrical shells are adopted. The results show that the angles of stiffeners and elastic foundation parameters strongly effect on the natural frequencies of the SSFG cylindrical shell.
Comprehensive and accurate analysis of a finite foundation beam is a challenging engineering problem and an important subject in foundation design. One of the limitation of the traditional Winkler elastic foundation model is that the model neglects the effect of the interface resistance between the beam and the underneath foundation soil. By taking the beam-soil interface resistance into account, a deformation governing differential equation for a finite beam resting on the Winkler elastic foundation is developed. The coupling effect between vertical and horizontal displacements is also considered in the presented method. Using Galerkin method, semi-analytical solutions for vertical and horizontal displacements, axial force, shear force and bending moment of the beam under symmetric loads are presented. The influences of the interface resistance on the behavior of foundation beam are also investigated.
This study presents an analytical approach to investigate the thermodynamic behavior of functionally graded beam resting on elastic foundations. The formulation is based on a refined deformation theory taking into consideration the stretching effect and the type of elastic foundation. The displacement field used in the present refined theory contains undetermined integral forms and involves only three unknowns to derive. The mechanical characteristics of the beam are assumed to be varied across the thickness according to a simple exponential law distribution. The beam is supposed simply supported and therefore the Navier solution is used to derive analytical solution. Verification examples demonstrate that the developed theory is very accurate in describing the response of FG beams subjected to thermodynamic loading. Numerical results are carried out to show the effects of the thermodynamic loading on the response of FG beams resting on elastic foundation.
