  • This study was to clarify the variations in a marine ecosystem through examining the species composition of benthic algae in the coast of Dokdo Island during summer (June & August, 2003). The total number of species found in benthic algae was 45 composed of 11% green algae, 29% red algae and 60% brown algae. The dominant species were Enteromorpha linza, Cladophora spp. and Codium frgile for green algae, Ecklonia cave, Eisenia bicyclis, Sargassum confusum, S. patens, S. horneri, Myagropsis myagroides for brown algae and Amphiroa cphedrace. A pusilla, Lithophyllum okamurae, Corallina spp. Laurencia pinnata, L. hamata, Chondria crassicaulit, C. dasyphylla, Gelidium amansii, Neosiphonia yendoi and Polysiphonia yendoi for red algae. The number of benthic algal species decreased more in this study than in previous researches. The whitening of the rocky shore might provoke the decrease of benthic algal biomass and species.

  • This experiment was undertaken in order to investigate whether chicken can serve as a carrier for swine lungworm, Metastrongylus apri. The results abtained are summerized as follows: All chickens which were fed the infective larvae of M. apri, in the form of infected earthworm (Eisenia foctida) excreted appreximately 4.4 to 5.4 percent of the infective larvae in their feces between 2 to 10 hours after dosing. The larval excretion was marked especially during the first 2 hours. A few (0.10~0.12%) larvae were detected from the intestinal wall of chickens by pepsin-digestion method on a day after dosing, but no further migration or development of the larvae was observed. The larvae which had passed through the digestive tract of chickens retained their viability and produced characteristic lungworm disease when inoculated to guineapigs. From these results, it may he concluded that the chicken can serve as a carrier for the infective larvae of M. apri.

  • Clinical tests revealed that the extracts of Gelidium amansii (Gelidiaceae) had a anthelmintic action and further examinations were made on the anthelmintic components of this seaweed. This anthelmintic principle is absorbed on alumina and eluted from it by alkali solution. The active principle is absorbed on activated carbon from aqueous extract and eluted from it by methanol and it is not adsorbed on Amberite IR-120(H-form). This anthelmintic effective fraction was prepared by the use of this properties. Action of the active principle of Gelidium amansii was examined pharmacologically. The active principle of Gelidium amansii was found to decrease the tensity, tonus and mobility of Eisenia foetida(Savigny) nerve muscles. The active principle of this effective fraction was submitted to paper chromatography and spots to ninhydrin were detected at Rf; 0.30-0.31(yellow), 0.26(violet), 0.2(violet), 0.14-0.13(violet), 0.9(orange) and 0.04(violet).

  • Earthworms have been widely used as bioindicators for soil ecotoxicity assessment. Ecotoxicity of methyl tert-butyl ether(MTBE) to terrestrial organisms were evaluated by- earthworm assay. Test earthworm species were Perionyx excavatus and Eisenia andrei. The. toxicity test was performed based on a OECD guideline No. 207 with slight modification. Mortality and abnormal morphology of earthworms exposed to different concentrations of MTBE were measured. Toxic levels of MTBE were determined by measuring the median lethal concentration (LC5O) after 72 hours. The toxicity data was statistically analyzed by Trimmed Spearman-Harbor method. This study showed that, P. excavatus is more sensitive to E. andrei, and that earthworm assay can be a good protocol to evaluate the soils contaminated gasoline components.

  • It was found that the extracts of Sargassum thumbergii (Sargassaceae) had an anthelmintic action on Ascaris suilla and further examinations were made on the anthelmintic compounds of the seaweed. The anthelmintic principle is soluble in water, adsorbed in aqueous extract with activated carbon and eluted from the carbon with 90% aqueous methanol solution. But it is not adsorbed on alumina and amberite IR-120 (H-type). The anthelmintic fractions were prepared by the use of these properties. The active principle of Sargassum thunbergii was pharmacologically examined and was found to decrease the tenisty, tonus, mobility and amplitude of Eisenia foetida nerve muscles. The active principle was subjected to paper partition chromatography but yellow spot to ninhydrin was not revealed.

  • Although the earthworm is an important animal species capable of regenerating missing body part, earthworm regeneration is not well understood at the tissue, cell and molecular levels. In order to understand the developmental changes of blastema during earthworm tail regeneration, the formation and development blastema during regeneration was investigated by histological analysis. Within 1 day after amputation, dediffentiating blastemal cells appeared in coelomic side of longitudinal muscle layer. At 3 days postamputation, proliferating blastemal cells migrated into coelum and blastema was formed beneath wound epithelium around 7 days after amputation. Segmentation of blastema was observed around 2 weeks after amputation followed by redifferentiation of nephridium, intestine, setae and septa.

  • Previous surveys on Ulleung-do (Dagelet Isl.) found just ten earthworm taxa while the current survey unearthed a dozen species. Placement of parthenogenetic 'tube' Amynthas dageletensis Hong & Kim, 2005 is resolved as it clearly belongs in synonymy of Metaphire soulensis (Kobayashi, 1938) which becomes a new Ulleung-do record. Other new megascolecids are recorded since Amynthas heteropodus (Goto & Hatai, 1898) and A. baemsagolensis Hong & James, 2001 are confirmed as synonyms of A. corticis (Kinberg, 1867) and A. carnosus (Goto & Hatai, 1899), respectively. The latter taxon is differentiated and its synonym A. pingi (Stephenson, 1925) provisionally revived. New lumbricids are Bimastos parvus (Eisen, 1874), Eisenia japonica (Michaelsen, 1892) and questionably Dendrodrilus rubidus (Savigny, 1826). All confirmed species are common exotics with no endemics. Drawida moniligastrids were not yet located on this remote island for reasons unknown.

  • Menopause is often associated with several chronic diseases, including osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and obesity. In this study, we investigated the ability of Eisenia bicyclis (EB) to prevent bone loss in ovariectomized rats, a model for postmenopausal osteoporosis. Extracts from EB obtained using ethanol or hot water were analyzed for total polyphenol content and osteoporosis effects in vivo. Total polyphenol content was higher with extraction by hot water compared to ethanol extraction. Fifty 8-week-old female Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to four groups: the group were sham-operated rats (SHAM), ovariectomized rats (OVX-CON), and ovariectomized rats that were treated with EB at 50 mg/kg body weight (OVX-EB50) and 200 mg/kg body weight (OVX-EB200), respectively. The diets were fed to rats for 6 weeks after their operation. We found that the alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity was lower in the EB extract group compared to the OVX-CON group. Collagen and pyridinoline content, in bone and cartilage, were reduced by ovariectomy, but the supplemented EB extract groups exhibited higher concentrations in their bones. These results suggest that EB can be used for the industrial development of foods with therapeutic functions.

  • Environment-friendly agro-materials tend to be preferred to chemical insecticides recently. For this reason, many studies were conducted to develop environment-friendly insecticides containing natural materials. The purpose of this study was to assess ecotoxicity for 5 plant essential oils (Thyme white, Clove bud, Cassia, Lavender, Lemon eucalyptus) expected to prevent from pests and be used for agro-materials. Target species used to assess acute toxicity were aquatic invertebrate (Daphina magna), fish (Oryzias latipes), honeybee (Apis mellifera L.) and earthworm (Eisenia fetida). The EC50 value, toxicological responses of thyme white, clove bud, and cassia to Daphina magna were 2.5, 2.8, and $6.9mg\;L^{-1}$ respectively and these values were moderately toxic according to standard of USEPA. $EC_{50}$ of Lavender and lemon eucalyptus were >$10mg\;L^{-1}$ then they were considered as slightly toxicity. In case of acute toxicity test to fish, $LC_{50}$ of thyme white and cassia were 6.7 and $7.5mg\;L^{-1}$ each other. The other plant essential oils indicated $LC_{50}$ >$10mg\;L^{-1}$. Acute contact and oral toxicity test to Honeybee were conducted. As a result, $LD_{50}$ of all essential oils were >$100{\mu}g$ a.i. $bee^{-1}$ in both of tests. In case of acute toxicity test to earthworm, $LC_{50}$ of thyme white, clove bud, cassia, lavender, and lemon eucalyptus were 149, 230, 743, 234, and $635mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively. In conclusion, if the safety for earthworm is confirmed, 5 plant essential oils are expected to be use for environment-friendly insecticide materials with low risk against ecosystem and contribute to developing environment-friendly agro-materials.
