  • The main difference between mono-volume rendering and multi-volume rendering is data intermixing. In this paper, we first propose a selective rendering method for fast visualizing specific volume according to the surface level and then present data intermixing method for multiple volumes. The selective rendering method is to generate distance transformed volume using a distance transform to determine the minimum distance to the nearest interesting part and then render it. The data intermixing method for multiple volumes is to combine several volumes using intensity weighted intermixing method, opacity weighted intermixing method, opacity weighted intermixing method with depth information and then render it. We show the results of selective rendering of left ventricle and right ventricle generated from EBCT cardiac images and of data intermixing for combining original volume and left ventricular volume or right ventricular volume. Our method offers a visualization technique of specific volume according to the surface level and an acceleration technique using a distance transformed volume and the effective visual output and relation of multiple images using three different intermixing methods in three-dimensional space.

  • An approach for predicting the effective thermal conductivities of fiber-reinforce composite has been developed based on a thermal-electrical analogy. The unit cell of the composite laminate is divided into regular volume elements and the material properties have been given to each element. By constructing the series-parallel thermal resistance network, the thermal conductivities of composite both in-plane and out-of-plane direction have been predicted. Graphite/Epoxy composite is used for a balanced plain-weave composite laminate. By comparing the predicted results and the previous works, good agreement has been found.

  • Although heterogeneous materials consisted of micro-constituents are complicated, it is possible to evaulate effective elastic moduli by using micro-mechanics models. In order to evaluate effective elastic moduli of concrete, all aggregates in a representative volume element(RVE) are assumed spherical and randomly distributed. A dilute distribution of inclusions is considered first, and the corresponding overall elastic moduli of the RVE are estimated. Then, the self-consistent method is used in order to take into account the interaction effects. The elastic moduli of concrete are calculated using the models and compared with those of experiment for different volume fractions of the aggregates and elastic moduli of the mortar and the aggregates.

  • A volume integral equation method and a mixed volume and boundary integral equation method are presented for the solution of plane elastostatic problems in solids containing orthotropic inclusions and voids. The detailed analysis of the displacement and stress fields are developed for orthotropic cylindrical and elliptic-cylindrical inclusions and voids. The accuracy and effectiveness of the new methods are examined through comparison with results obtained from analytical and boundary integral equation methods. Through the analysis of plane elastostatic problems in unbounded isotropic matrix containing orthotropic inclusions and voids, it is established that these new methods are very accurate and effective for solving plane elastostatic and elastodynamic problems in unbounded solids containing general anisotropic inclusions and voids or cracks.

  • In a 200nm Cz-Si crystal, a macroscopic fluctuation in pulling rate was intentionally introduced an then the variations of the pulling rate and the position of OSF-ring were compared each other. The formation behavior of OSF-ring in the effective volume, defined as the region between the growth interface position -α and the growth interface position +α, is most affected by the pulling rate fluctuation. To understand the correct effect of a macroscopic pulling rate fluctuation, its cumulative effect in the effective volume should be considered. A new concept of modeling for it was proposed here.

  • In this study, static and dynamic solvent extractions are compared for more efficient extraction of polychlorinated dibenzofurans (PCDFs) from fly ash. Static solvent extraction rather than dynamic extraction showed a higher recovery of PCDFs, which was adsorbed strongly with fly ash. The effects of parameters, such as temperature, toluene-isopropyl alcohol mixture, static and dynamic time flow rate, and solvent volume on the extraction were investigated and the variations in average recoveries of PCDFs were explained. In both extractions, temperature was an effective parameter because the higher temperature gave the higher recoveries. In dynamic solvent extraction, dynamic time was more effective than flow rate and solvent volume for the extraction of PCDFs from fly ash. Multi-layer column chromatography on neutral and acidic silica gel with n-hexane was used for cleaning up the extracts. The quantification of the PCDFs extracted was performed using HPLC-UV.

  • In this study, a new constitutive model has been developed to predict the elastic behavior of plain weave textile composites, using the finite element (FE) method. The geometric conditions and basic assumptions of this model are based on the basics of a continuum theory developed for the plane curved composites. In this model, the mechanical properties of the weave region and pure matrix region is calculated separately and then imported for the FE analysis. This new constitutive model is used to implement the mechanical properties of weave region in the representative volume element (RVE). The constitutive relations are implemented as user-material subroutine code (UMAT) in ABAQUS® FE software. The results of FE analysis have been compared with experimental results and other data available in the literature. These comparisons confirmed the capability of the presented model for the prediction of effective elastic properties of plain weave fabric composites.

  • Increasing the oil volume in the oil : water mixtures using isopropyl myristate, oleic acid as oils, the solubilities of methyl, propyl and butyl parabens and the MICs (minimum hibitory concentrations) to E. coli were increased. But in liquid paraffin, the solubility was reversed. The relation between MIC and solubility of parabens had constant factor of 0.7 as saturation fraction percent. The solubility of methyl paraben was crossed over in those of propyl and butyl parabens, when the oil volume was increased. When the oil was used over the cross-over point, methyl paraven was useful to preserve the systems, and below the cross-over point the more lipophilic propyl and/or butyl parabens were effective.

  • Effective plan and operation managements can be established in advance if the traffic volume of container ship will be forecasted in the trend for container port's cargo volume to increase. At the viewpoint for marine traffic the number of incoming and outgoing container ship can be presumed in the long run and organised rational plan to deal the demand of marine traffic on the basis. Therefore, the paper estimated the future traffic volume of incoming and outgoing container ship for Busan, Gwangyang, and Incheon port on a forecasting data basis of container volume suggested in the national ports base plan. The trends of volume per ship on container were estimated with ARIMA models and seasonal index was computed. Thus the traffic volume of container ship in the future was estimated computing with volume per ship in 2011,2015, and 2020 respectively.

  • A mathematical model was established for estimating changes in pressure and volume of permeable kimchi packages. The model comprises the CO2 gas production from kimchi and permeation of O2, CO2 and N2 through the permeable film or sheet. Using the developed model, the effects of various packaging variables on the pressure and volume changes were analyzed for rigid and flexible packag es of kimchi(3% salt content) at 15oC, and then effect of storage temperature was also looked into. In case of rigid pack of 400g, using the plastic sheet of high CO2 permeability and initial vacuumizing can help to relieve the problem of pressure build up. The lower fill weight can further reduce the pressure, but will result in higher packaging cost. For the flexible package of 3 kg, highly permeable films such as low density polyethylene(LDPE) and polypropylene can reduce the volume expansion. Higher ratio of CO2 permeability to O2 and N2 permeabilities are effective in reducing the volume expansion. Increased surface area cannot contribute to reduction of volume expansion for highly permeable flexible packages of kimchi. For the impermeable packages, pressure and volume at over ripening stage (acidity 1.0%) increase with decreased temperature, while those at optimum ripening stage(acidity 0.6%) change little with temperature. Pressure of permeable rigid LDPE package increases with tem perature at any ripening stage, and temperature affects the volume of flexible LDPE package very slightly. Experimental verification of the present results and package design with economical consid eration are needed as a next step for practical application.
