Study on Educational On-line Game for Collaborative Learning (협동학습을 위한 교육용 온라인 게임 연구)

  • The social interest for collaborative teaming and educational game has been increased. In this paper, we investigated the educational value of collaborative teaming and game. Based on this investigation, we propose an educational on-line game model for collaborative teaming. Although the proposed model is still conceptual design, it sufficiently shows that on-line RPG game can be a good collaborative teaming method for young children. We will perform a comparison study on the teaming achievement between the two methods: 1) the on-line game proposed in this paper, 2) the conventional educational method performed in normal school.

  • In this paper, we refer to positive effect and negative effect of game. And we inquire the recent trend of edutainment that emphasizes charm of game and educational effect at the same time. Because the simulation game and the role-playing game have strong toxication, the limitation of computer use is essential. Therefore, we present dynamic computer using-time control system for prevention of game toxicaton and for activity of educational contents. The method considered in this paper increases computer using-time n proportion to using of educational contents. So it lead user of computer to use educational contents voluntarily.

  • The definition of educational games, the importance of game development, and the characteristics of educational games are described. The design of the screen used in the game and the algorithm used are described. We explained the game implementation in the system environment and experiment, and the questionnaire showed whether there is nonviolence of the game, games preferred by children, game benefits, and fun elements of the game. The superiority of the game was described by comparing and analyzing the educational shooting game proposed in this paper with the existing game. The existing children's games had many shortcomings in terms of commercial and educational aspects, but the proposed games proved to be less violent and have educational effects.

  • The social interest for collaborative learning and educational game has been increased. In this paper, we investigates the educational value of collaborative learning and game. Based on this investigation, we propose an educational on-line game model for collaborative learning. Although the proposed model is still conceptual design, it sufficiently shows that on-line RPG game can be a good collaborative learning method for young children. In detail, we speculate about the conventional educational method performed in normal school. And then, we describes the elements of a computer game which complies with the real collaborative learning program.

Computer Game Usage and Needs for Education on the Prevention of Computer Game Addiction among Elementary School Children (초등학교 고학년 학생의 컴퓨터 게임 사용 실태와 중독 예방 교육 요구)

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to identify the computer game usage of elementary school children and their needs for education on the prevention of computer game addiction. Methods: The subjects of this study were 455 elementary school children. The data were collected from an open and structured questionnaire on the subjects' computer game usage and their needs for education on the prevention of computer game addiction. Results: The boys played computer games more than the girls. There were statistical differences in the durations of the computer game use, the main locations of the computer games they played, the times of the day when they used computers, the times of the day when they played computer games, the number of times in a week they visited Internet cafes, what motivated them to play computer games, and their partners in playing computer games according to gender. From an analysis of 714 statements of the subjects with respect to their need to be educated on computer game addiction prevention, six domains and 19 themes were drawn. The six main domains identified were Definition & Status, Etiology & Process, Influences, Prevention, Diagnosis & Coping with Computer Game Addiction, and General Information on Computer Games. This study results revealed that elementary school children have to be comprehensively educated on how to prevent computer game addiction. Conclusion: A computer game addiction prevention program concerning these themes and domains must be developed. A study should also be conducted to identify the educational needs of parents of elementary school children on computer game addiction prevention.

  • Digital Game design with educational purposes and User Experience measurement via game analytics has been extensively covered in literature, however non-digital games such as tabletops in education and its corresponding educational impact have limited research. In this paper, we propose a guideline to create non-digital educational games from scratch and evaluate them based on the know-how of developers and the investigation of scholars who have studied the engagement factors related to the digital games and applied their findings to non-digital games. Along with the guideline we provide an actual implementation, a game called HXGN_766, meant to serve as scaffolding of computational thinking and rudimentary Python programing concepts. We believe both, guideline and game, can be a useful reference for those interested on game design, educational content design, game quality control check, and unplugged computer science activities. This is the first in a series of papers where the game design concept, the evaluation methodology and the game itself will be presented with more detail.

  • The educational computer game service, due to its entertainment role, is a very attractive tool for students to raise their interests in learning. Especially mathematics, the most difficult subject for many students, is one of the typical subjects in which the educational computer game service can be efficiently applied. Most of the previous game services is for single or two learners. And learner only have to simply submit a solution for the proposed math expression in the game. In this paper a multi-player game service based on TCP/IP socket programming technique is designed and implemented to join in the game for multiple learners. In addition, we design a game rule to improve learners' number sense by letting them arrange various ways to solve the problem. Finally, using the requirements of educational game service, we evaluate the proposed game service and its usability.

  • The reality is that existing games are commercial or violent rather than informative. So, such a phenomenon resulted in many social problems. To solve such problems, I designed and implemented a game which is not violent but educative and child-friendly. In this thesis, an educative game is defined and its characteristics are described. I designed the user interface of the game for children, proposed relevant algorithms, and showed resultant screens of the game. Also, I compared the game with the existing games in order to prove that my game is non-violent, non-commercial, and rather educative. This ladder rejection game is different from the existing game in terms of design, functions, and contents of the screen. This paper contains specific explanations about the supplemented ladder rejection game. First, the design of this ladder rejection game extended fundamental principles of the existing game and added new diverse functions.

Analyses of the Structural Relationships between College Students' Perceived Game Realism, Flow and Learning Satisfaction in Game-Based Learning

  • Perceived game realism (PGR) has recently emerged as a key concept in explaining the mental processing of digital game playing and the societal impact of digital games. However, few studies have examined its conceptualization and educational effects from an empirical viewpoint, especially in educational games. This study's participants included 292 university students in South Korea. A total of 212 questionnaires were valid and used for the analyses. They learned English expressions using a computer-based educational game and then completed questionnaires on the research variables. We investigated six factors of PGR: simulational realism (SIR), freedom of choice (FRC), perceptual pervasiveness (PEP), social realism (SOR), authenticity (AUT), and character involvement (CAI). We expected the factors to have valid effects on the university students' flow and learning satisfaction after a game-based learning (GBL) experience. Our research results demonstrated a causal relationship between SIR, FRC, CAI, and learning satisfaction. Furthermore, the indirect effects of SIR and CAI on learning satisfaction through flow were statistically significant.
