Nurses' Perception of the Importance of Evaluating Continuing Education Programs (간호사의 보수교육 프로그램 평가에 대한 중요도 인식)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the nurses' perception of the importance of evaluating continuing nursing education programs. Methods: Subjects were 465 nurses enrolled in continuing nursing education programs at five university hospitals in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do. Data were collected from September 20, 2011 to October 13, 2011. The instrument was developed by the author through a literature review. Content validity was established from a panel of six experts. Data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN 18.0 program. Results: The purpose of the program was rated as the most important domain by the subjects. Interestingly, 'program outcome' and 'effectiveness of program' were ranked below the mean (M=$3.64{\pm}0.75$). These two domains were influenced by the district of work and the type of institution. The position of the participants at their institutions made the significant differences on their perception of 'program purpose.' Conclusion: The results of this study might aid us to have better understanding for what nurses perceive the importance of evaluating continuing nursing education programs. This information might be able to be used for improving programs. Further studies are needed to explore the validity of the instruments to evaluate continuing nursing education programs.

Current Status of Interprofessional Education-related Research within Korean Nursing Literature (전문직 간 교육에 대한 국내 간호연구 현황 분석)

  • This study was conducted to analyse interprofessional education(IPE)-related research within Korean nursing literature and suggest future directions for IPE research. For this, Five articles were included for final review. As a results, IPE in nursing research has received attention since 2017. Studies have confirmed that no clear definition of IPE concepts has been established in nursing education. Key findings regarding IPE were categorized into Awareness of IPE, Effects of IPE as an intervention and Validation of Korean version tools measuring effectiveness of IPE. The collaboration of nurses and other healthcare professionals is essential to providing quality healthcare. Therefore, considerable effort should be made to define the concept of IPE and activate research to effectively apply it to nursing education and practice in Korea.

The Effects of Jigsaw Cooperation Learning on Communication Ability, Problem Solving Ability, Critical Thinking Disposition, Self-directed Learning Ability and Cooperation of Nursing Students (직소모형(Jigsaw)을 응용한 협동학습이 간호대학생의 의사소통능력, 문제해결능력, 비판적 사고성향, 자기주도적 학습능력 및 협동심에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: This study was conducted to examine the effects of jigsaw cooperative learning on the communication ability, problem solving ability, critical thinking disposition, self-directed learning ability and cooperation of nursing students. Methods: A one-group, pre-post design was utilized with 92 nursing students as subjects. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and paired t-tests using SPSS/WIN 24.0. Results: The scores on problem solving ability, self-directed learning ability and cooperation were significantly increased after the education intervention. Conclusion: These findings indicate that cooperation learning is an effective intervention for improving problem-solving, self-directed learning ability, and cooperation in nursing education.

Nurse Educators' Experience of Developing and Implementing a High-fidelity Simulation-based Interprofessional Education Module for Medical and Nursing Students

  • Objective: Despite the recommendation of the use of high-fidelity simulation (HFS) in interprofessional education (IPE), there is little known about its work for nursing students. Thus, this study aimed to explore nurse educators' perceptions and experiences in developing and implementing the HFS-based IPE for nursing and medical students. Methods: This study used a case study, using reflective filed notes. Results: Nursing educators perceived HFS as an effective educational approach to engaging nursing and medical students actively in interprofessional collaborative practice (ICP) experiences and in evaluating their actual performance on it. In terms of their perspectives on the elements necessary for effective HFS-based IPE, four themes were identified: collaborative learning, co-facilitating debriefing, leadership commitment and active faculty involvement.

Accelerated second-degree bachelor of science in nursing program in South Korea: Current status and future directions (국내 간호대학(학과)의 학사 편입학 과정의 현황과 발전 전략)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe characteristics of colleges implementing the accelerated second-degree bachelor of science in nursing program in South Korea and provide insight into strategies to improve the program outcomes. Methods: An on-line questionnaire developed for this study was emailed to deans of nursing colleges who were members of the Korean Association of College of Nursing. Questions included items related to nursing college, students, curriculum, and anticipated difficulty in relation to an increase of the number of second-degree students. Results: Out of 117 nursing schools, 33 schools (28.2%) participated in the on-line survey. The actual number of second-degree students and their ratio (about 10%) to regular students significantly increased in 2019. Male students were enrolled nearly twice as many times as regular students. Among the anticipated difficulties, clinical practice institutions (3.94) and clinical practice instructors (3.73) showed relatively higher scores than other difficulties such as teaching (3.58) and education facilities (3.30). Conclusion: In order to improve the quality of nursing education for second-degree students, more nursing faculties and innovative clinical practice support systems are needed. Future study is warranted to investigate the educational experience of second-degree students and graduates.

Comparison of Multi-Mode Simulation and SimMan(R) Simulation on Evaluation of Nursing Care for Patients with Dyspnea (호흡곤란환자 간호의 실습교육평가에서 Multi-mode와 SimMan(R) 시뮬레이션 활용 비교)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of nursing simulations between multi-mode simulation and $SimMan^{(R)}$ simulation on nursing students' nursing competency, satisfaction, and simulation participation experience in nursing care for patients with dyspnea. Method: Subjects were 107 junior nursing students in R College of Nursing in Seoul from June to November in 2009. Students were allocated to either a Multi-mode simulation group or a $SimMan^{(R)}$ simulation group. The multi-mode simulation consisted of standardized patients combined with Vital Sim, comparing the $SimMan^{(R)}$ group. Result: The Multi-mode simulation group reported higher levels of nursing competency (p=.017) but lower communication skills (p<.001) compared to the $SimMan^{(R)}$ simulation group. There were no meaningful differences in satisfaction of simulation education between the two groups. The $SimMan^{(R)}$ simulation group received a substantial health assessment and the Multi-mode simulation group experienced reality in caring for standardized patients. Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrated that Multi-mode simulation has similar educational effects like $SimMan^{(R)}$ simulation and suggest that nurse educators should match simulation fidelity with educational goals for effective education.

An Effect of the Application of Educational Electronic Nursing Record System for Nursing Students (간호학생의 교육용 전자간호기록 시스템 적용 효과)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify the effectiveness of educational Electronic Nursing Record System in terms of nursing process preparation ability and satisfaction about the system itself. Methods: A one group pre-post experimental study design was utilized in this study. The effectiveness of the system was examined through quality of nursing diagnoses, interventions, and outcomes and electronic nursing record system satisfaction inventory. Junior and senior nursing students were the potential study respondents and evaluation instruments were applied only for the one who agreed to participated in the study. Education about nursing process and electronic nursing record system was carried out as part of regular classes and students were guided to prepare nursing process upon the scenarios developed earlier. Results: 29 juniors and 33 seniors prepare nursing process documentation related to each scenario and both groups showed significant improvement upon nursing process documentation (t=7.53, p<.001, t=3.23, p=.003, respectively) compared to paper based nursing process preparation. Satisfaction about system itself was 2.78(0.81). Conclusion: Educational electronic nursing record system seems to be effective to train nursing students for nursing process preparation ability. Effort to enhance its utility are called in the area of education and system itself.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore the current status of education for nursing management in Korea. Methods: A descriptive study was done using a questionnaire developed by the investigators. The data were collected by survey from 96 out of 129 nursing schools, between December 2010 and February 2011. Results: For 22.9% of nursing schools, there was no faculty for nursing management. The credits and subjects included in nursing management varied among the nursing schools. Lectures in subjects related to nursing management were given not only by nursing management faculty but also by faculty with other majors. There were more faculty and credits for nursing management courses in 4-year nursing schools than in 3-year schools. Conclusion: To improve the quality of education in nursing management, there is a need to standardized courses and provide nursing faculty who have majored in nursing management.

Application of a Documentary about High-risk Newborns in Nursing Education: An Exploratory Study (고위험신생아 간호교육에서의 다큐멘터리 활용에 대한 탐색적 연구)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to explore nursing students' recognition and understanding of the clinical environment of high-risk neonatal nursing care after watching a documentary about the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), where high-risk newborns are treated. Methods: This study was a qualitative content analysis. In total, 151 nursing students' personal essays describing their reactions to a documentary about the NICU were analyzed using the NVivo 12 program. Results: Nursing students' experiences of engaging with a documentary about the NICU were structured into four thematic categories: 'actual observations of the imagined NICU', 'observation and recognition of nursing knowledge', 'empathy with people related to the baby', and 'establishing attitudes and values as a nurse'. Conclusion: Based on the results of this study, it is suggested that documentaries can be applied in nursing education about high-risk newborns.

The influence of social support and health promotion behaviors on nursing work performance among nurses (간호사가 지각하는 사회적 지지, 건강증진행위가 간호업무성과에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the predicting factors of nursing work performance. Methods: The participants in this study were 148 nurses working in S university hospital in P city. The scales included social support, health promoting lifestyle profile-II (HPLP-II), and nursing work performance. A descriptive analysis and stepwise multiple regression were used for data analysis. Results: Significant correlations were found among social support, health promotion behaviors and nursing work performance. The significant predictive factors of nursing work performance were the emotional support subscale of social support (β=.31, p<.001) and the interpersonal relations subscale of health promotion behaviors (β=.32, p<.001). These two subscales explained 27% of nursing work performance. Conclusion: Nursing education programs should include an emphasis on developing methods of emotional support and interpersonal relations in order to improve nursing work performance among clinical nurses.
