  • Proteins in highly oriented lipid bilayer samples are useful to study membrane protein structure determination. Planar lipid bilayers aligned and supported on glass slide were prepared. These stack of glass slide with planar lipid bilayers are not well fit for commercial solid-state NMR probe with round coil. Therefore, homebuilt solid-state NMR probe was built and used for a stack of thin glass plates and RF coil is wrapping directly around the flat square sample. The overall filling factor of the coil is much better and the large surface area enhances the extent to orientation by providing uniform environments for the phospholipids and the high ratio of circumference to area reduces edge effects. $^1H\;and\;^{15}N$ double resonance probe for 400 MHz NMR (9.4T) with a flat coil (coil size: 11 mm ${\times}$ 20 mm ${\times}$ 4 mm) is constructed and tested.

  • In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to elucidate the structural variation of $\alpha-MoO_3$ electrode upon discharge/charge reaction in a lithium ion battery. According to the XAS analysis, hexavalent Mo atoms in $\alpha-MoO_3$ framework are reduced as the amount of intercalated lithium ions increases. As lithium de-intercalation proceeds, most of pre-edge peaks are restored again. However, according to the Fourier transforms of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra, lithium de-intercalation reaction is partially irreversible upon the charge reaction, which is one of the main reasons why the capacity of $\alpha-MoO_3$ electrode decreases upon successive discharge/charge cycles.

  • The roles of coordinating ligands (TOPO, OA, HDA, and TDPA) for the synthesis of ZnO nanoparticles are investigated. Various shapes (hexagonal cone, hexagonal plate, and rod) and sizes (5-100 nm) of ZnO nanoparticles are prepared in relation to the coordinating ligands. The hexagonal shapes ($\leq$ 100 nm) are synthesized with TOPO and OA, while smaller size nanorods (5 ${\times}$ 30 nm) are with TOPO and TDPA. The relative intensities of two distinctive emission bands centered at 385 and 500 nm, which are related to the exciton and defect states, respectively, depend on the crystal qualities of ZnO nanoparticles affected by the coordinating ligands. The intense UV emissions with the reduced visible emissions are found in the monodisperse nanoparticles such as hexagonal cones and nanorods, suggesting that the monodispersity as well as the crystallinity is closely related to the coordinating ligands. The blue-shift of photoluminescence and absorption edge is observed in the nanorods, because the sizes of the nanorods are in the quantum confinement regime.

  • Background: Forest edges create distinctive ecological space as adjacent constituents, which distinguish between different ecosystems or land use types. These edges are made by anthropogenic or natural disturbance and affects both abiotic and biotic factors gradually. This study was carried out to assess edge effects on disturbed landscape at the pine-dominated clear-cut area in a genetic resources reserve in Uljin-gun, eastern Korea. This study aims to estimate the distance of edge influence by analyzing changes of abiotic and biotic factors along the distance from forest edge. Further, we recommend forest management strategy for sustaining healthy forest landscapes by reducing effects of deforestation. Results: Distance of edge effect based on the abiotic factors varied from 8.2 to 33.0 m. The distances were the longest in $Mg^{2+}$ content and total nitrogen, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$ contents, canopy openness, light intensity, air humidity, $Na^+$ content, and soil temperature followed. The result based on biotic factors varied from 6.8 to 29.5 m, coverage of tree species in the herb layer showed the longest distance and coverage of shrub plant in the herb layer, evenness, species diversity, total coverage of herb layer, and species richness followed. As the result of calculation of edge effect by synthesizing 26 factors measured in this study, the effect was shown from 11.0 m of the forest interior to 22.4 m of the open space. In the result of stand ordination, Rhododendron mucronulatum, R. schlippenbachii, and Fraxinus sieboldiana dominated arrangement of forest interior sites and Quercus mongolica, Vitis amurensis, and Rubus crataegifolius dominated spatial distribution of the open area plots. Conclusions: Forest interior habitat lies within the influence of both abiotic and biotic edge effects. Therefore, we need a forest management strategy to sustain the stability of the plant and further animal communities that depend on its stable conditions. For protecting forest interior, we recommend selective logging as a harvesting method for minimizing edge effects by anthropogenic disturbance. In fact, it was known that selective logging contributes to control light availability and wind regime, which are key factors affecting microclimate. In addition, ecological restoration applying protective planting for the remaining forest in the clear-cut area could contribute to prevent continuous disturbance in forest interior.

  • The tetranuclear copper(II) cluster compound $[Cu_4OCl_6(C_{14}H_{12}N_2)_4]$ has been synthesized by hydrothermal reaction and studied by X-ray diffraction. The four copper(II) atoms locate four capsheaves of a tetrahedral skeletal structure and a oxygen atom as interstitial atom occupies the center position of the same tetrahedron, and each edge of the Cu-Cu tetrahedron is bridged by one ${\mu}_2$-Cl anion. The copper atom possesses slightly distorted trigonal bipyramidal geometry with three ${\mu}_2$-Cl atoms in equatorial position and the interstitial O atom and one N atom from 3-benzyl-benzimidazole ligand occupying axial position. The Cu-Cu distances are in the range of 3.0986-3.1162 ${\AA}$. The EPR spectrum suggested that the copper(II) ground state $d_{x2-y2}$ and the coordination geometry was trigonal bipyramidal.

  • A new photoelectrode composed of $Sb_6O_{13}$ nanoparticles with the size of 20-30 nm has been prepared via thermolysis of a colloidal antimony pentoxide tetrahydrate ($Sb_2O_5{\cdot}4H_2O$) suspension. The $Sb_6O_{13}$ electrode showed good semiconducting properties applicable to dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs); the energy band gap was estimated to be $3.05{\pm}0.5$ eV and the position of conduction band edge was close to those of $TiO_2$ and ZnO. The DSSC assembled with the $Sb_6O_{13}$ photoelectrode and a conventional ruthenium-dye (N719) exhibited the overall photo-current conversion efficiency of 0.74% ($V_{oc}$ = 0.76 V, $J_{sc}=1.99\;mAcm{-2}$, fill factor = 0.49) under AM 1.5, $100\;mWcm^{-2}$ illumination.

  • $NaTa_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$ ($0{\leq}x{\leq}0.40$) nanocubes were synthesized by a relatively low temperature hydrothermal method, using $Ta_2O_5$, $FeCl_3$ and NaOH as the precursors. The UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectra showed that $NaTa_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$ had significant visible-light-absorbing capability, and the absorption edge of $NaTaO_3$ shifted to longer wavelength with the increase of Fe dopants. Moreover, $NaTa_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$ exhibited room-temperature ferromagnetism when $Fe^{3+}$ occupied $Ta^{5+}$ sites in $NaTaO_3$ crystal lattice. The ferromagnetism is mainly attributed to the superexchange interactions between doped $Fe^{3+}$, rather than the contribution of oxygen vacancies caused by Fe doping. Therefore, Fe doping can simultaneously regulate the optical and magnetic properties of $NaTaO_3$ semiconductor, which will enable its potential applications in multifunctional optical-electronics and opticalspintronics devices.

  • In this study, the elastic liposome consisted of egg phospholipids and edge activator ($Tego^{(R)}$ care 450) was prepared in order to supplement the defect of the conventional liposome. We prepared elastic liposome containing quercetin, known as natural antioxidant, and evaluated the vesicles size, elasticity, loading efficiency, stability, and in vitro skin permeation. The mean diameter of quercetin loaded elastic liposome formulations ranged between 208.2~303.4 nm and loading efficiency was observed 64.1~87.5%. The highest loading efficiency (87.5%) and deformability (28.3) were observed at the optimal ratio of 90 : 10 (egg phospholipids : $Tego^{(R)}$ care 450) among 0.1% quercetin loaded elastic liposome formulations. The elastic liposome formulation was selected for further transdermal permeation study. The elastic liposome ($129.9{\mu}g/cm^2$) exhibited more skin permeability than general liposome ($114.8{\mu}g/cm^2$) and 1,3-butylene glycol ($75.1{\mu}g/cm^2$) solution. This results suggest that the elastic liposome formulation using $Tego^{(R)}$ care 450 as a major edge activator could be useful for the delivery of active ingredient through the skin transdermal.
