To present the spatial variation of fish assemblages in the Geum River in Korea, the concept of beta diversity (β-diversity) estimates based on the variance of the community data table was applied. Fish communities and environmental variables were collected from 13 sampling sites along the in mid-low reaches of the River. We calculated the β-diversity and local contribution to beta diversity (LCBD) values at each site depending on the two types of data, 'occurrence' with Jaccard and Sørensen dissimilarity coefficients, and 'abundance' with Hellinger distance. Multivariate and correlation analyses were also performed to determine the relationships between LCBD and other variables, such as community indices and physicochemical and hydrological factors. The β-diversity values of fish communities in the River were estimated as 0.218 and 0.145 for occurrence data table with Jaccard and Sørensen respectively, and 0.268 for abundance data. Similar patterns of LCBD along the sampling sites were detected in two dissimilarity measurements of occurrence table, and LCBD values with abundance data were slightly different. The LCBD values are strongly correlated with community indices, and also suitable for indicating the uniqueness of fish assemblages. However, further research is needed to determine the LCBD value as an indicator of environmental variability.

Nowadays, the challenges of ensuring good water quality and quantity of river are becoming more important for human society, but there has been troublesome for purifying river water. In this study, we performed the fundamental study of a river water treatment system using riverside soil and eco-friendly optimal media for improving river water quality and can also treat a large amount of river water. As the results of the physical and chemical characterization of the two different soils (Kyungan and Chungrang, The Republic of Korea), which were collected from real stream sides in the Han River basin, and five kinds of media (zeolite, perlite, steel slag, woodchip and mulch), both soils were all classified as a sand, and effective size ($D_{10}$) and uniformity coefficient (U) of the soil were about 0.2 mm and 4 or so, respectively. Through the batch and column experiments with the soil and eco-friendly media, zeolite and mulch were found to be efficient for decreasing nitrogen. In addition, steel slag was especially superior to the other media for phosphorus removal. From soil reforming tests volume ratios were 2.8, 1, and 1 of Kyungan soil, zeolite, and steel slag hydraulic conductivity of mixed soil was increased $1.30{\times}10^{-2}$ from $2.85{\times}10^{-3}$ of Kyungan soil, and the removal efficiencies of nitrogen and phosphorus were also improved. These results show that reforming of the soil enhanced the purification of a large amount of water, and zeolite, mulch, and steel slag might be facilitated as proper functional media.
Influx of exotic fishes is the problem of fish management. The reason why interest on river environment was increased. Recently, River project was conducted to consider environmental function on the ecosystem and Eco-Diversity. Therefore, farmlands structure along the river was removed such as vinyl greenhouse. Daejeo ecological park was built in 4 River project. Daejeo ecological park have significance habitat for migratory birds and eco-diversity. In spite of nature river improvement, ecological system in river will be break down by exotic fishes. This study was conducted to investigate analyze the fish faun and prevailing species occupancy in Daejeo ecological park. This data will be used to make the management plan of exotic fishes in ecological park around Daejeo ecological park.

After the middle of 90's, the eco rivers maintenance enterprise was propelled about city rivers. The environmental function is more emphasized because of revising the rivers law enforced at 2008.4. Also, the field of application is being magnified. It is difficult to apply that the conceptual public work expense estimating model of the rivers which adjusts a focus at open channel rivers excepts the small-scale rivers maintenance public work. The research presents a eco rivers public work conceptual public work expense estimating model frame work. It suits the change of the rivers environmental renewal construction paradigm. It develops the conceptual public work expense estimating plan of the rivers at the planning phase using the collection and analysis of the data. As a result, riffle, spur dyke, stepping stones, fish way and etc are added. Consequently, it brings the hydrophilic function is considered seriously conceptual public work expense estimating model of the eco rivers.

Theses days, there are 3 prerequisites for dam building in Korea: First one is how to build the dam safe and stable from the technical points of view. Second one is how to design and construct the dam environmentally sound with the minimum change of the surrounding area of the dam site. Third one is how to activate the local economy of the surrounding area of the dam site in order to make the dam construction sustainable from the social and economical points of view. As far as technical aspects far dam building, there are hardly any problems in dam design and construction in our country. However, there are a little difficulty according to the location of the dam site. In order to fulfill the second option it is believed that a lot of effort should be made to accomplish the second task not only because that fairly large area shall be inundated with water after impounding but also because that ecological environments shall be changed due to change of water environment. Therefore, thoughtful investigation and assessment of the environmental features of the local regions have to be preceded before starting of the dam building. In order to overcome these difficulties Hantan river dam has been declared as an Eco-dam with 3 strategies and 9 activities plan at the design stage after sufficient consideration of the local identities of these region and coupled national plans for surrounding areas. Finally, Eco-tourism with the several coupled network-wise touristic courses, namely PERTH model, has been proposed after thorough analysis of the local identities by the Jahari window to make local economy being activated. Detailed descriptions for 3 strategies and 9 activities plan for declaration of Eco-dam and proposal of Eco-tourism with the network-wise touristic courses will be mentioned in the main content.
This study was conducted to apply natural river technologies to levees and examine the results. The new eco-friendly bio-polymer was applied, a combination of eco-friendly biopolymers and soil, to levee slope to enhance durability and eco-friendliness and to establish reinforcement measures against unstable levees due to overtopping. A semi-prototype levee of 1 m in height, 3 m in width, with a 1:2 slope and 5 m length, was constructed at the Andong River Experiment Center. The bio-soil mixed with the biopolymer and the soil at an appropriate ratio was treated with a 5 cm thickness on the surface of levee to perform the stability evaluation according to overtopping. Using the pixel-based analysis technique using the image analysis program, the breached area of levee slope was calculated over time. As a result, the time for complete decay occurs more than 12 times than that of ordinary soil levee. Therefore, when the new substance is applied to the surface of levee, the decay delay effect appears to be high.

For the slope stability and revegetation of retaining wall, Eco-Stone was built beside a newly constructed road in August, 2002. Eco-Stone blocks were constructed in 4 different combinations of irrigation and soil types. Within the Eco-Stone, planted were 6 species such as Forsythia koreana, Rhododendron mucronulatum, Spiraea prunifolia var. simpliciflora, Rhododendron sp. Euonymus japonica, and Aster koraiensis. Shoot growth was greater on common soils than at a better soil treatment for Forsythia koreana(P<0.01) and Spiraea prunifolia var. simpliciflora(P<0.05), while there were no significant differences for the other species. Biomass increment of the planted species also did not show significant differences between irrigation types, except Rhododendron sp. and Aster koraiensis of which biomass was higher under irrigation than at no irrigation for common soils. Most of the planted individuals were alive, showing survival ratio of 90~97% with no significant differences among treatment blocks. These results imply that the Eco-Stone can be used economically for slope stability and revegetation instead of concrete blocks, without a specific soil and irrigation requirement.

In this study, using a complex of physical, chemical, and biological evaluation factors, the ecological vulnerability to climate change were evaluated at each river in the Nakdong river basin. First, runoff, sediment rate, and low flow discharge changes according to AIB climate change scenario using the SWAT model were simulated. Also, for the assessment of chemical and biological factors, 48 points that water quality monitoring sites and ecological health measurement points are matched with each other was selected. The water quality data of BOD and T-P and the biological data of IBI and KSI in each point were reflected in the assessment. Also, the future rise in water temperature of the rivers in Nakdong river basin was predicted, and the impact of water temperature rise on the fish habitat was evaluated. The top 10 most vulnerable points was presented through a summary of each evaluation factor. This study has a contribution to river restoration or management plan according to the characteristics of each river.
