Streams and rivers are among the most fascinating and complex ecosystems on Earth. Recently, many plans of ecological streams are developed and performed in several regions. In spite of obtaining of instream water is most important problem to composite an ecological stream, assessment methods for instream water are too various to estimate an optimal result. In this study, we developed decision support system so that decision-maker may can be supported decision making for composite an ecological stream with connecting the satisfaction of residents in stream. Decision support system is composed of hydraulic, water quality, eco-river simulation model and can show optimal instream flow assessment and water quality improvement.
This is to evaluate the ascending capacity of migratory fish in the pool and weir type fishways. Ascending environment of the migratory fish in rivers is analyzed through eco-hydraulic experiments using sweetfish, Plecoglossus altivelis, trout, Oncorhnchus mykiss, and surveying the fall height of existing pool and weir type fishways. When the fall height is less than 16.0cm, the ascending capacity of sweetfish in the pool and weir type fishways is greater than trout. On the other hand when the fall height is over 20.0 cm, the ascending capacity of trout is greater than sweetfish. A sweetfish may prefer to jump for upward moving than trout. And its endurance after upward jumping over wear is greater than that of sweetfish. Because of high fall height of existing pool and weir type fishways the migratory environment in rivers is so poor. When the pool and weir type fishways are designed and constructed in river the fall height of weir must be considered for the variety of migratory fish living in river and the fall height of weir less than 20.0cm is suggested.
River characteristics in South Korea has been affected by seasonal climatic variability due to climate change and by remarkable land cover change due to rapid economic growth. In this regard, the roles of river management is getting more important to eco-system and human community in watersheds of South Korea. Understanding river characteristics including direct runoff and baseflow, the first step of river management, can give a significant contribution to sustainable river environment. Therefore, the objective of this study is to quantify the contributions of the direct runoff and baseflow to river streamflow. For this, we used the BFLOW and WHAT programs to conduct baseflow separation for 71 streamflow gauge stations in Han River system, South Korea. The results showed that baseflow index for 71 stations ranges from 0.42 to 0.78. Also, gauge stations which have baseflow index more than 0.5 occupied 76% of a total stations. However, baseflow index can be overestimated due to human impacts such as discharge from dams, reservoirs, and lakes. This study will be used as fundamental information to understand river characteristics in river management at the national level.

In this study, the results of fish assemblage survey for 16 reservoirs in the Yeongsan·Seomjin-River watershed were presented with fish assemblage characteristics analysis in relation to reservoir size. The survey method including number of sampling sites was followed the "Biomonitoring survey and assessment manual" of the Ministry of Environment/National Institute of Environmental Research (MOE/NIER), and the reservoirs were categorized as three size groups, small, medium or large reservoirs, based on the MOE/NIER as well. Total 13 family classified into 44 species were collected from 2018 (7 reservoirs) to 2019 (9 reservoirs), and the dominant and subdominant species were Hemiculter eigenmanni (Relative abundance, RA, 32.9%) and Lepomis macrochirus (RA, 31.4%), respectively. As a result of the analysis in relation to the reservoir size, the average (±standard deviation) number of species of the small, medium and large reservoirs were 11±2.9, 14.3±2.1, 22.7±0.6, respectively, which showed positive correlation with the reservoir size. Total 6 fish assemblage characteristics(number of species, number of individuals, richness index, herbivorous fish ratio, carnivorous fish ratio, exotic fish ratio) showed significant differences between the each reservoir size groups (P<0.05). As a result of cluster analysis, 16 reservoirs were clustered into 5 groups with 60% similarity, and the each reservoirs seems to be clustered depends on the distance from each other, watershed and their historical geology rather than size. These results are baseline information for the understanding of fish assemblage in Korean reservoirs, important for establishing management policy of reservoirs in the Yeongsan·Seomjin-River watershed.

In this study, a comparative review was conducted on how to use RGB images to obtain river topographic information, which is one of the most essential data for eco-friendly river management and flood level analysis. In terms of the topographic information of river zone, to obtain the topographic information of flow section is one of the difficult topic, therefore, this study focused on estimating the river topographic information of flow section through RGB images. For this study, the river topography surveying was directly conducted using ADCP and RTK-GPS, and at the same time, and orthomosiac image were created using high-resolution images obtained by drone photography. And then, the existing developed regression equations were applied to the result of channel topography surveying by ADCP and the band values of the RGB images, and the channel bathymetry in the study area was estimated using the regression equation that showed the best predictability. In addition, CCHE2D flow modeling was simulated to perform comparative verification of the topographical informations. The modeling result with the image-based topographical information provided better water depth and current velocity simulation results, when it compared to the directly measured topographical information for which measurement of the sub-section was not performed. It is concluded that river topographic information could be obtained from RGB images, and if additional research was conducted, it could be used as a method of obtaining efficient river topographic information for river management.
Construction of highway would influence wildlife habitat being fragmented and deteriorated. It is inevitable to observe the death of animals that are killed by vehicles. Nonetheless the cause and status of animal roadkill have not been studied, and this study first attempted to analyze the roadkill in major highway in Korea. We collected 860 individuals of dead animals in Joongang Highway during 1996-2003. Among them Korean hare(Lepus sinensis) was totaled in 165 individuals(19.2%) with the highest figure; Korean racoon dog(Nyctereutes procyonoides) was 146(17.0%); Korean squirrel(Sciurus vulgaris) 56(6.5%); Korean roe deer(Capreolus capreolus) 26(3.0%). Domestic animals was totaled in 232 individuals(27.0%); domestic dog(Canis familiairis) 25, and domestic cat(Catus felis) 207. This study also categorized habitat as mountain-mountain, mountain-plain, mountain-river, plain-plain, plain-river, river-river in each side of the road. Habitat of mountain-plain was the heightest with 296(38.9%) individuals followed by mountain-mountain with 263(34.6%). This indicates that wild animals associated with mountain habitat was most influenced by the construction of roads. This study implied that we should mitigate the roadkill by designing artificial construction such as eco-bridge, fences along the sideway, and boxes under the highway, underdrain structure, etc. The monitoring and cause of habitat fragmentation with GIS approach should be followed to reduce the roadkill.
The bacterial number, extracellular enzyme activities and structure of bacterial community which are major constituent of aquatic ecosystem within the artificial vegetation island (AVI) were compared to those of the nearby pelagic lake waters in order to evaluate the possibility of the AVI as a eco-technological measure for water quality improvement and restoration of littoral zone in man-made reservoirs. There was not a significant difference in the total number of bacteria, but the number of active (viable) bacteria within the AVI was about 0.7 to 4.1 times higher than nearby pelagic lake water. The ratio of the number of active bacteria versus the total number of bacteria was also higher in the AVI than nearby pelagic lake water. The activities of ${\beta}$-glucosidase and phosphatase were 1.0 to 13.1 and 0.8 to 7.3 times higher respectively in the AVI than nearby pelagic lake water, showing that microorganisms were more active within the AVI. The bacterial communities of the two waters, examined by FISH method, did not indicate a clear difference in the springtime when the growth of macrophytes was immature, but during summer and fall it showed a clear difference indicating the formation of distinct bacterial community within the AVI compared to nearby lake water. From the results of this study, we conclude that AVI can contribute to make up the littoral ecosystem which show rapid cycling of matters through active detritus food chain in the dam reservoirs which have unstable aquatic ecosystem due to short hydraulic residence time and to strengthen the self-purification capacity of the lake.

In this study, the antibiotic components in the final effluent from the 12 wastewater treatment facilities located in the Nakdong River basin were investigated, and the correlation between organic matters, nutrients and antibiotics was analyzed. In the final effluent of the wastewater treatment facilities, three sulfonamides antibiotics (sulfamethazine, sulfathiazole, sulfachlorpyridazine) and tetracyclines antibiotics (oxytetracycline, doxycycline) were detected. Sulfamethazine were detected at all points and ranged from 10.398 to 278.784 ng/L. Sulfathiazole were detected at 6 points (Andong, Gumi, Hapcheon, Miryang, Uiryeong, Haman), and ranged from 23.773 to 144.468 ng/L. The correlation coefficients between sulfathiazole and TSS, COD, TOC, NH3-N, NO2-N, and T-N components were high in the range of 0.73 to 0.92. The correlation coefficient between sulfamethazine and T-N was 0.48, and the correlation with the rest of the water quality components was low. The correlation coefficient between sulfamethazine and sulfathiazole was 0.78. Through this study, it was confirmed that the concentration of sulfonamides antibiotics was higher than the concentration of tetracyclines antibiotics in the final effluent of 12 wastewater treatment facilities in the Nakdong River basin, and the concentration of sulfathiazole increased with organic matters and nutrients.

High turbidity submersion due to torrential downpour is one of the factors that influences the plant growth. This study is focused on analyzing the plant's growth rate for Salix species such as gracilisyla, koreensis, glandulosa when these trees are waterlogged. The length of shoots for this control group in the natural state is 33.4% (gracilisyla), 24.3% (koreensis), 23.9% (glandulosa), however, they stopped growing in submersion. Compared to the leaf number of Salix species of this control group in the natural state, 144.5% (gracilisyla), 77.3% (koreensis), 40.3% (glandulosa) in the natural state 30 days, in 30 days submersion, the number of leaves is zero except koreensis. In the results of this experiment, Salix species stopped growing quickly when submersed. This study concludes that it is necessary to plant eco-friendly plants around the slope of the reservoir and dam where flooding takes place frequently.

There are fifteen non-point pollution management areas in Korea and three of them (Doam lake, Daegi district and Golji-cheon) are located in the upstream of the Namhan river watershed. Many efforts to reduce non-point sources (NPS) pollution have been conducted, however, water quality pollution in the watershed is still serious. To solve these problems, it is a priority to grasp water quality using statistical techniques. In this study, a trend analysis was conducted to evaluate the effect of NPS management in the watershed. The long-term trends from 1996 to 2018 of water quality properties were analyzed using data collected from the water environment information system. Seventeen monitoring stations were selected along the main stream in Namhan river basin. Monthly water quality properties (BOD, COD, TN, TP, TN/TP ratio, Conductivity, SS and Chlorophyll-a) were collected and analyzed by Mann-Kendall test and LOWESS. The results showed that the Conductivity tended to increase in all regions and was the highest level in Jijangcheon. Organic pollution such as BOD and COD tended to increase in the Jungseon area. SS did not show a large tendency, but it showed high concentration in the Doam watershed. In all regions, 40% of water quality properties showed a tendency to 'UP', 15% of water quality properties tended to 'DOWN', and 46% indicated no tendency. In order to determine the cause of this, additional research and measures for improvement are necessary. This study will be used for the establishment of water quality policy in the future.
