  • The insecticides salithion$(Salithion^{(R)},\;25\;EC)$, decamethrin$(Decis^{(R)}\;1\;EC)$, phenthoate$(Elsan^{(R)},\;47.5\;EC)$, diazinon$(Diaton^{(R)})$, chlorfevinphes$(Birlane^{(R)},\;24\;EC)$, phosalone$(Zolone^{(R)},\;25\;EC)$, and methamidophos$(Tamaron^{(R)},\;60\;SL)$ were evaluated on the effectiveness of single ULV foliar spray for the control of the pine fall midges(Therodiplosis japonensis UCHIDA et INOUYE) when the insecticides diluted with the 50 times of water were applied to the pine trees$(1.5\~2m\;in\;height)$ on June 6 by ULV Sprayer(Battery-type of 12 voltage, devised by Union Carbide). A single ULV foliar spray of salithion, decamethrin, and phethoate among the insecticides tested was significantly effective for the pressure of the gall incidence by the insects.

On the Security of a New C2C-PAKA Protocol (새로운 C2C-PAKA 프로토콜의 안전성 연구)

  • To achieve an entire end-to-end security, the classical authentication setting such that all participants have a same password is not practical since a password is not a common secret but a personal secret depending on an individual. Thus, an efficient client to client different password-based authenticated key agreement protocol (for short, EC2C-PAKA) has been suggested in the cross-realm setting. Very recently, however, a security weakness of the EC2C-PAKA protocol has been analyzed by Feng and Xu. They have claimed that the EC2C-PAKA protocol is insecure against a password impersonation attack. They also have presented an improved version of the EC2C-PAKA protocol. In this paper, we demonstrate that their claim on the insecurity of EC2C-PAKA protocol against a password impersonation attack is not valid. We show that the EC2C-PAKA protocol is still secure against the password impersonation attack. In addition, ironically, we show that the improved protocol by Feng and Xu is insecure against an impersonation attack such that a server holding password of Alice in realm A can impersonate Bob in realm B. We also discuss a countermeasure to prevent the attack.

Effects of Light Intensity and Electrical Conductivity Level on Photosynthesis, Growth and Functional Material Contents of Lactuca indica L. 'Sunhyang' in Hydroponics (수경재배에서 광도와 양액 농도가 베이비 산채 왕고들빼기 '선향' 광합성과 생육 및 기능성 물질 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to examine the changes of photosynthesis, growth, chlorophyll contents and functional material contents in light intensity and EC concentration of wild baby leaf vegetable, Indian lettuce (Lactuca indica L. cv. 'Sunhyang') in DFT hydroponics. The cultivation environment was 25±1℃ of temperature and 60±5% of relative humidity in growth system. At 14 days after sowing, combination effect of light intensity (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density (PPFD 100, 250, 500 µmol·m-2·s-1) and EC level (EC 0.8, 1.4, 2.0 dS·m-1) of nutrient solution was determined at the baby leaf stage. The photosynthesis rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate and water use efficiency of Indian lettuce increased as the light intensity increased. The photosynthesis rate and water use efficiency were highest in PPFD 500-EC 1.4 and PPFD 500-EC 2.0 treatment. The chlorophyll content decreased as the light intensity increased, but chlorophyll a/b ratio increased. Leaf water content and specific leaf area decreased as light intensity increased and a negative correlation (p < 0.001) was recognized. Plant height was the longest in PPFD 100-EC 0.8 and leaf number, fresh weight and dry weight were the highest in PPFD 500-EC 2.0. Anthocyanin and total phenolic compounds were the highest in PPFD 500-EC 1.4 and 2.0 treatment, and antioxidant scavenging ability (DPPH) was high in PPFD 250 and 500 treatments. Considering the growth and functional material contents, the proper light intensity and EC level for hydroponic cultivation of Indian lettuce is PPFD 500-EC 2.0, and PPFD 100 and 250, which are low light conditions, EC 0.8 is suitable for growth.

Effect of Eucommiae Cortex on Hind Limb Muscle Atrophy of Sciatic Nerve Transectioned Rats (두충이 좌골신경손상 흰쥐의 후지 근육위축에 미치는 영향)

  • In oriental medicine, it is known that Eucommiae Cortex (EC) has strengthening and rehabilitative effects on the bone-muscle dysfunction. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of EC on the skeletal muscle atrophy. The muscle atrophy was induced by unilateral transection of the sciatic nerve in Sprague-Dawley rats. EC (water-extract, 170mg/100 g body weight) was treated once a day for 12 days. In this study, the effect of EC examined the muscle weight of hind limb, cross section areas of muscle fibers, fiber type compositions, apoptosis related factors (Bax and Bcl-2). EC reduced muscle atrophy in soleus (SOL), medial gastrocnemius (MGT), extensor digitorum longus, and tibialis posterior significantly in the damaged hind limb. EC increased type-I muscle fibers and decreased type-II muscle fibers significantly in SOL of the damaged hind limb. EC enlarged cross section areas of type-I and type-II muscle fibers significantly in SOL. EC enlarged cross section areas of type-I and type-II muscle fibers significantly in. EC reduced apoptotic nuclei and atrophic muscle fibers in SOL and MGT. EC reduced Bax positive muscle nuclei in SOL and MGT. EC up-regulated Bcl-2 positive muscle fibers in SOL and MGT. These results suggest that EC has an anti-atrophic effect and anti-apoptotic effect against myonuclear apoptosis induced by the peripheral nerve damage.

QSAR Modeling of Toxicant Concentrations(EC50) on the Use of Bioluminescence Intensity of CMC Immobilized Photobacterium Phosphoreum (CMC 고정화 Photobacterium phosphoreum 의 생체발광량을 이용한 독성농도(EC50)의 QSAR 모델)

  • Concern for the effects of toxic chemicals on the environment leads the search for better bioassay test organisms and test procedures. Photobacterium phosphoreum was used successfully as a test organism and the luminometer detection technique was an effective and simple method for determining the concentration of toxic chemicals. With EC50 a total of 14 chlorine substituted phenols benzenes and ethanes were used for the experiments. The test results showed that the toxicity to P. phosphoreum increased in the order of phenol > benzene > ethane and the toxicity also increased with the number of chlorine substitution. Quantitative structure activity relationship (QSARO) model can be used to predict EC50 to save time and endeavor. Correlation was well established with the QSAR parameters such as log P, log S and solvatochromic parameter(Vi/100 $\pi$, ${\beta}$m and am). The QSAR modeling was used with multi-regression analysis and mono-regression analysis. These analyses resulted in the following QSAR : $log EC_{50} =2.48 + 0.914 log S(n=9 R2=85.5% RE=0.378) log EC_{50}=0.35 - 4.48 Vi/100 + 2.84 \pi^* +9.46{\beta}m-4.48am (n =14 R2=98.2% RE=0.012) log EC_{50} =2.64 -1.66 log P(n=5, R2=98.8% RE=0.16) log EC_{50}=3.44 -1.09 log P(n=9 R2= 80.8% Re=0.207)$

Effects of Temperature and EC Concentrations on the Growth and the Sporangial Development of $Phytophthora$ sp. in Paprika Cultivation (온도와 EC 농도가 파프리카 역병 생장과 유주자낭 형성에 미치는 영향)

  • In the present study, it was performed that the influences of temperatures and electrical conductivity on the mycelial growth and formation of zoosporangium of the $Phytophthora$ sp. in paprika nutriculture. We investigated mycelial growth of $Phytophthora$ sp. at different temperatures. Morphological characteristics of the isolated pathogen from paprika were typically similar to those of $Phytophthora$ sp. such as no septa and formation of zoosporangia. Optimum growth temperature of the pathogen was $25^{\circ}C$. At $20^{\circ}C$, $30^{\circ}C$ and $15^{\circ}C$, the mycelium growth deceased, respectively. EC level of nutrient solution the mycelial growth was increased EC 0.5 up to $1.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$ and reduced 2.0 up to $3.5dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$. The formation of sporangia was negatively correlated with EC, and the formation of sporangia were highly inhibited at EC $4dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$.

Seasonal Variations of OC and EC in PM10, PM2.5 and PM1.0 at Gosan Superstation on Jeju Island (제주도 고산 PM10, PM2.5, PM1.0 중 OC와 EC의 계절별 변화 특성)

  • Organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) concentrations were determined for $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{1.0}$ aerosols particles collected at Gosan Superstation on Jeju Island from August 2007 to September 2008. Aerosols were collected on quartz filters for 24 hours and then OC and EC were analyzed by TOR/IMPROVED method. Mean concentrations of OC and EC were $4.66\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $1.69\;{\mu}g/m^3$ for $PM_{10}$, $3.95\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $1.69\;{\mu}g/m^3$ for $PM_{2.5}$, and $3.16\;{\mu}g/m^3$ and $1.42\;{\mu}g/m^3$ for $PM_{1.0}$, respectively. The concentrations of OC and EC comprised 16.4% and 6.0% of $PM_{10}$, 22.9% and 9.8% of $PM_{2.5}$, and 23.0% and 10.0% of $PM_{1.0}$. OC and EC showed a clear seasonal variation with the highest in winter and the lowest in summer. The correlations between the two were also the best during the winter ($R^2$=0.87, 0.94, and 0.95 for $PM_{10}$, $PM_{2.5}$ and $PM_{1.0}$). The ratio of OC/EC exhibited the maximum (7.24) during an Asian dust event due to an increase of OC, which was possibly derived from soil. The mass fraction of both OC and EC was the highest in fall. When OC and EC concentrations were highly elevated, EC1 (the first EC fraction determined at $550^{\circ}C$) and pyrolyzed OC (POC) were dominant subcomponents in winter and OC3 (the third OC fraction determined at $450^{\circ}C$) and POC in spring.

Effect of Plant-Growth-Promoting-Bacterial Inoculation on the Growth and Yield of Red Pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) with Different Soil Electrical Conductivity Level (염류수준별 고추 생육과 수량에 미치는 식물생육보진미생물(植物生育保進微生物) 접종효과)

  • This study was conducted to determine the effect of treatment with the plant-growth-promoting bacteria on the growth and yield of red pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) with different soil electrical conductivity(EC) levels. The mixed liquid culture was done pseudomonas P and saboraud dextrose medium. The isolated bacteria(IB) were inoculated by spray of 3.7ml at 1/2000a pot filled with different soil electrical conductivity level(2.9, 8.6, 11.5dS/m) every week, respectively, with mixed liquid culture (Pseudomonas P+Sabouraud dextrose) of eight strains. The plant height of red pepper with IBs treatment in different soil EC levels showed better growth than IBs nontreatment in the order of the 2.9>8.6>11.5 dS/m. The yield of pepper with IBs treatment in different soil EC level was higher in 13% than IBs nontreatment and chemical properties($P_2O_5$, K, Ca, Mg) of the soil after harvest in IBs treatment were slightly increased, while organic matter and EC of IBs treatment were slightly decreased than those of IBs nontreatment. Moisture content of the soil after the harvesting with IBs treatment was slightly increased than IBs nontreatment.

Quality Changes in 'Hayward' Kiwifruit Wine Fermented by Different Yeast Strains (효모에 따른 참다래 'Hayward' 와인의 품질 변화)

  • The yeast strains used for fermentation are known to influence the qualities of wine. We investigated the effects of fermentation using different yeast strains on the properties of wine produced from 'Hayward' kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa). The physicochemical characteristics of wine produced using various yeast strains for fermentation were also analyzed. Saccharomyces cerevisiae Gervin No.5 strain (GVN), S. bayanus Lavin strain EC1118 (EC1118), and S. cerevisiae Red star Davis No. 796 (No.796) are commercial dry yeast strains selected for optimization of fermentation. Although the soluble solid contents of samples fermented by all three yeast strains decreased by a similar extent, the levels of alcohol production differed, particularly during the first week of fermentation. Use of the GVN strain resulted in the highest alcohol concentration (13.8%, v/v), whereas fermentation with No.796 and EC1118 strains yielded alcohol contents of 13.0% and 12.5% (both v/v), respectively. Upon sensory evaluation, GVN-fermented wine had a strong taste and bitterness, with high acid and alcohol contents. Wine fermented using No.796 had a chemical profile similar to that of GVN-fermented product, but the taste remained sweet, consistent with the lower alcohol content. EC1118-fermented wine was soft and sweet in taste, high in flavor, and had a low alcohol content. Total phenolic levels and antioxidant activities in wine fermented by EC1118 were significantly higher than in wines prepared using No.796 or GVN. When previously described characteristics were additionally considered, EC1118 was selected as an optimum strain for further study. In conclusion, fermentation of kiwifruit using different yeast strains yielded wines with distinct characteristics. The yeast strain EC1118 had the most desirable properties, and is considered suitable for kiwifruit fermentation. Valuable attributes of wine fermented by this yeast include overall sensory acceptance, an appropriate level of total phenolics, and good antioxidant activity.

Effects of Expanding Feed Processing Technologies on Egg Characteristic and Nutrient Digestibility in Laying Hens (Expanding 사료 가공 기술이 산란계의 계란 품질 및 영양소 소화율에 미치는 효과)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of expanding feed processing technologies on the egg characteristics and nutrient digestibility in laying hens. A total of two hundred seventy laying hens were randomly allocated into three treatments with fifteen replications for six weeks. Dietary treatments include 1) MS(mash), 2) EC(expanded crumble) and 3) EP(expanded pellet). In the egg production, the EC and EP treatments were significantly higher than MS treatment(p<0.05). However, no significant difference was founded in egg weight(p>0.05). Egg shell breaking was increased in EC and EP treatments compared with MS treatment(p<0.05), however, egg shall thickness showed no significant difference(p>0.05). Egg production and egg shell breaking were significantly higher in EC and EP treatments than MS treatment(p<0.05), but egg weight and egg shell thickness were no significantly difference among treatment(p<0.05). Yolk color was increased in EC treatment compared with other treatments(p<0.05). Also, yolk index was significantly improved in EC and EP treatments compared with MS treatment(p<0.05). Haugh unit was increased in EC treatment compared with MS treatment(p<0.05). EC treatment had improved DM, Ca and P digestibility. In conclusion, Expanded crumble and pellet processing could improve the egg characteristic and nutrient digestibility in laying hens.
