  • Distribution pattern and fishing conditions of sandfish, Arctoscopus japonicus in the East Sae were explored using catch and catch per unit effort (CPUE) by eastern sea Danish seine and coastal gill net fisheries from 2004 to 2008. A. japonicus was one of major target species for the eastern sea Danish seine and coastal gill net fisheries in the East Sea, which were caught from April to October for the eastern Danish seine, and from October to December for the coastal gill net, respectively. In recent, the distribution and centroid of fishing ground moved northward, as seawater temperature increased. The species spawned in the coastal areas of Gangwon, northern East Sea, during winter, started to move to deeper water after spawning from spring, extended widely from Gangwon to Ulsan, southern East Sea, during summer, and migrated back to the spawning ground off Gangwon during autumn.

  • GEK observation had been done in Satsunan sea region (south western region of Kyushu, Japan), mixing sea region of Kuroshio, its count-current and water mass of Eastern China Sea in August 1968. The results are al follows: 1. Observed values by GEK are coincided well with that of ship's drift in the surface water of Kuroshio region. 2. Compared the observed values by GEK with that of dynamic calculation of 800 db, in the eastern area of the surveyed region occupied by Kuroshio water mass, they are coincided well. But not in the western area which is of mixing zone of the Eastern China Sea water mass, Kuroshio and its count-current, showing over 1 knot differences with calculated value are bigger than that of GEK observation.

  • The Central East Sea Tsunami caused huge damage to the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsula, eapecially Imwon port was damaged relatively strongly beacause of water depth variation which makes the wave concentration on this port. there are many virtual tsunami in east sea which has a possibility of happening. So, it is very important to expect the region which may be damaged by vritual tsunmis. In this study, modified dispersion-correction terms are used. The modified scheme has the advantage of using the constant spatial grid size and time step size even in real topography. Dynamic linking technique and staggered grid system are used. Using this model some cases of virtual tsunami was simulated and check the region which is occured maximum wave heights on the eastern sea of the Korean peninsula.

  • Fish fauna in the eastern Yellow Sea was determined using samples collected by an otter trawl from September 1999 to November 2001. The fish consisted of 97 species belonging to 80 genera and 50 families. The major taxa were the Perciformes (40 spp.), Pleuronectiformes (17 spp.), Scorpaeniformes (11 spp.) and Clupeiformes (10 spp.). Larimichthys polyactis, Engraulis japonicus, Liparis tanakai, Pampus echinogaster, Lophius lituron and Collichthys niveatus were predominated in abundance in the study area. The composition of the fish fauna has changed during the last three decades.

  • Surface sediment samples collected from the eastern half of the Yellow Sea proper in 1998 were analyzed for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), ubiquitous pollutants. Total PAHs concentrations varied from 1.0 to $320.5ng\;g^{-1}$ dw. Relatively high concentrations of PAHs were found in the muddy central part of the Yellow Sea. Sedimentary total PAHs concentrations in the Yellow Sea proper were similar to those of Californian offshores and the central Mediterranean Sea, albeit an order of magnitude lower than the Yellow Sea nearshore areas. Phenanthene/Anthracene concentration ratio of PAHs in bottom sediments suggested that pyrolytic PAHs might be dominant over petrogenic ones in the eastern Yellow Sea. Downcore depth distributions of PAHs from the relatively undisturbed core samples of the central Yellow Sea showed decreasing PAHs concentrations with core depths and suggested that the Yellow Sea has been increasingly exposed to PAH for decades. Annual total PAH flux to these sediments was estimated to be $166{\mu}gm^{-2}yr^{-1}$ in the central part of the Yellow Sea for the recent decade.

  • Cheju Island formed by Quarternary volcanism provides highly permeable hydrogeological environment. To meet the increasing demand of water in the island, many groundwater wells have been developed. The environmental isotopes(oxygen-18, deuterium, tritium) and chemical analysis of water samples from the eastern part of the island were carried out to ascertain whether groundwater in the eastern part of the island was contaminated by sea water. The result of tritium analysis indicated fast infiltration of meteoric water into underground and rapid mixing process between rain water and groundwater. The results of oxygen-18 and deuterium analysis demonstrated that most of the wells in the eastern part of the island were influenced by sea water intrusion. Chemical analysis of water samples revealed that most groundwater in study area were classified into Na-Cl type and showed high chloride/bicarbonate ratios. Sea water intrusion in the northeastern part of the island has proceeded at least 3 km within the coastaline, and in the south eastern part about 700m.

  • To predict the influence on fish stocks which were caused by environmental change in the fishing ground of shallow sea areas, we have developed the Shallow-Sea Ecological Model(SSEM) which that focuses on living organisms, especially fish and benthos. By applying the SSEM in the Seto-Inland Sea of Japan, we have simulated another aspect of influence on fish stocks that was caused by oxygen deficient water mass and nutrient loads. From the simulated result of the fish stocks, it was indicated that the stock of fish and benthos has shown a relative difference between the western sea and the eastern sea in the Seto-Inland Sea. According the to prediction, results of fish stocks that were caused by oxygen deficient water mass, it was estimated that the pelagicfish stock increases about 6 %, whereas the stocks of demersalfish and benthos decreases about 30% and 70%, respectively. On the other hand, it seemed that there was an increased in the fish stocks of demersalfish and benthos in the eastern sea of Seto-Inland Sea by nutrient loads reduction.

  • This study described the fishing characteristics of Pacific herring Clupea pallasii and examined the relationship between its catch and sea temperature in Korean waters from 1970 to 2019. Although the herring catch in Korean waters stayed below 1,000 tons per year from the mid-1970s to mid-1980s, the catch in the winters in the East Sea of Korea started to increase markedly after 1987-1988, when the sea surface temperature (SST) seemed to shift to a warmer regime. Since the mid-2000s, overall, herring was caught throughout the year in the East Sea and eastern South Sea of Korea, and its catch significantly increased by around 30,000 tons per year. The main fishing grounds of herring in the poor fishing years until the mid-1980s were possibly formed in the western offshore of Korea, and subsequently the fishing grounds were distributed in the eastern coast of Korea. While the standardized catch per unit effort (CPUE) for two main fisheries of herring catch was significantly correlated with the herring catch since the 2000s, there was a gradual decline since the 2010s. The herring catch in the East Sea had significant positive correlations with SSTs, but that in the West Sea had a significant negative correlation.

  • Daily time series of longshore sea surface temperature (SST) data at 3 stations, sea surface SST data at 58 stations in the eastern coast of the Korean Peninsular from 2001 to 2005 were used in order to study the temporal and spatial variations of the upwelling coastal cold water occurred in summer season. When the cold water occurred, SST has been decreased more than $-5^{\circ}C$ in a day. The cold water occurred frequently in the eastern coastal areas of Korea such as Ulgi, Kampo, Jukbyun. Daily variations of cold water temperature were quantified using remote control buoy system at Kijang in the southeastern coastal water from July to August in 2004. Hourly variations of SST occurred around $\pm3^{\circ}C$ when cold water disappeared at Kijang. There were close relationship between the strength of East Korean Warm Current, North Korean Cold Water and the scale of spatio-temporal cold water variations in summer season.

  • The investigation of driving mechanism for the formation of tropical night in the coastal region, defined as persistent high air temperature over than 25$^{\circ}C$ at night was carried out from August 14 through 15, 1995. Convective boundary layer (CBL) of a 1 km depth with big turbulent vertical diffusion coefficients is developed over the ground surface of the inland basin in the west of the mountain and near the top of the mountain, while a depth of thermal internal boundary layer (TIBL) like CBL shrunken by relatively cool sea breeze starting at 100 km off the eastern sea is less than 150 m from the coast along the eastern slope of the mountain. The TIBL extends up to the height of 1500 m parallel to upslope wind combined with valley wind and easterly sea breeze from the sea. As sensible heat flux convergences between the surface and lower atmosphere both at the top of mountain and the inland coast are much greater than on the coastal sea, sensible heat flux should be accumulated inside both the TIBL and the CBL near the mountain top and then, accumulated sensible heat flux under the influence of sea breeze circulation combined with easterly sea breeze from sea to inland and uplifted valley wind from inland to the mountain top returning down toward the eastern coastal sea surface should be transported into the coast, resulting in high air temperatures near the coastal inland. Under nighttime cooling of ground surface after sunset, mountain wind causes the daytime existed westerly wind to be an intensified westerly downslope wind and land breeze further induces it to be strong offshore wind. No sensible heat flux divergence or very small flux divergence occurs in the coast, but the flux divergences are much greater on the top of the mountain and along its eastern slope than on the coastal inland and sea surfaces. Thus, less cooling down of the coastal surface than the mountain surface and sensible heat transfer from warm pool over the coast into the coastal surface produce nocturnal high air temperature on the coastal inland surfaces, which is not much changed from daytime ones, resulting in the persistence of tropical night (nocturnal thermal high) until the early in the morning.
