A Study on Design of Metadata for Global Earth Observation Data (지구관측자료 메타데이터 설계에 관한 연구)

  • Recently, the frequency and scale of natural disasters such as typhoons, flood, earthquakes, and tidal waves from earthquakes has been increasing. Several nations have recognized that earth observation is essential for protecting the Earth's environment. However, as the data format from earth observation varies depending on areas, institutes, and countries, sharing and exchange between data is difficult. Thus, we have a metadata standardization scheme suitable for the domestic situation to allow exchange of data between societal benefit areas with reference to principles of data sharing and exchange that are discussed on GEO (Group on Earth Observation). We have also designed metadata schemes required to identify the metadata situation of earth observation data being used for 9 societal benefit areas of GEOSS(Global Earth Observation System of Systems).

Development and Application of the Educational Program to Increase High School Students' Systems Thinking Skills - Focus on Global Warming - (고등학생들의 시스템 사고 향상을 위한 교육프로그램 개발 및 적용 - 지구온난화를 중심으로 -)

  • The purposes of this study are: (1) to develop educational program designed to improve high school students' knowledge integration and their system thinking skills about global warming and (2) to identify the change of students' system thinking level. The developed program was implemented to twenty seven high school students, and six students grouped into three highs and three lows in their performance were selected to analyze their level of system thinking. The word association, casual map and drawing were used to measure and identify any significant change. As a result, the low level system thinking group improved their system thinking skills for global warming and the earth and sub-systems after the intervention. However, participants' misconception remained the same. And the high level systems thinking group showed more organize system thinking skills about a global warming topic. It is suggested that more educational programs be developed on various topics in order for high school students to improve their systems thinking skills as well as knowledge integration of earth systems and earth environment in school curriculum.

Comparison of multi-planetary systems including hot-Super Earth with and without exo-Jupiter

  • Almost hot-Super Earths ($R_p$~1 to $4R_{earth}$ orbital period < 100 days) are around Sun-like stars. But our solar system does not have hot-Super Earth. Andre et al. 2015 has explained this phenomenon by that Jupiter blocks migration of super earth. We have found a multi-planetary system KOI-94 with exo-Jupiter and hot-Super Earth from NASA exoplanet archive data (http://exoplanetarchive.ipac.caltech.edu). In this study, within multi-planetary systems including hot-Super Earth, we compared those with and without exo-Jupiter using their host star and exoplanet parameters, such as metallicity [Fe/H], $T_{eff}$ and $R_*/R_p$.

Calculations of the Single-Scattering Properties of Non-Spherical Ice Crystals: Toward Physically Consistent Cloud Microphysics and Radiation (비구형 빙정의 단일산란 특성 계산: 물리적으로 일관된 구름 미세물리와 복사를 향하여)

  • The impacts of ice clouds on the energy budget of the Earth and their representation in climate models have been identified as important and unsolved problems. Ice clouds consist almost exclusively of non-spherical ice crystals with various shapes and sizes. To determine the influences of ice clouds on solar and infrared radiation as required for remote sensing retrievals and numerical models, knowledge of scattering and microphysical properties of ice crystals is required. A conventional method for representing the radiative properties of ice clouds in satellite retrieval algorithms and numerical models is to combine measured microphysical properties of ice crystals from field campaigns and pre-calculated single-scattering libraries of different shapes and sizes of ice crystals, which depend heavily on microphysical and scattering properties of ice crystals. However, large discrepancies between theoretical calculations and observations of the radiative properties of ice clouds have been reported. Electron microscopy images of ice crystals grown in laboratories and captured by balloons show varying degrees of complex morphologies in sub-micron (e.g., surface roughness) and super-micron (e.g., inhomogeneous internal and external structures) scales that may cause these discrepancies. In this study, the current idealized models representing morphologies of ice crystals and the corresponding numerical methods (e.g., geometric optics, discrete dipole approximation, T-matrix, etc.) to calculate the single-scattering properties of ice crystals are reviewed. Current problems and difficulties in the calculations of the single-scattering properties of atmospheric ice crystals are addressed in terms of cloud microphysics. Future directions to develop physically consistent ice-crystal models are also discussed.

  • Reinforced earth wall system has been popularized since its introduction to Korean civil engineering society in early 1980's. Nowadays, the increased use of reinforced earth wall for the purpose of obtaining more land brings several additional demands such as environmental-friendly, better stable and constructible, and economical system. This paper introduces some recently developed reinforced earth wall systems with consideration of the current demands.

  • In this paper, three dimensional static behaviors of the self-anchored and partially earth-anchored cable-stayed bridges, with a span of 1400 meters, under wind loading are studied by using a 3D geometrical nonlinear analysis. In this analysis, the bridges both after completion and under construction are dealt with. The wind resistant characteristics of the both cable-stayed systems are made clear. In particular, the characteristics of the partially earth-anchored cable systems, which is expected to be a promising solution for extending the span of the cable-stayed systems further, is presented.

  • Recent climate fluctuation and environmental change at global scale are causing more incidences of disasters and calamities over the world. In a response to this environmental crisis, international collaboration for Earth Observation(EO) is obtaining more significance in order to understand, watch, and forecast changes in the earth system. As such, aerial monitoring based on remotely sensed data, indispensable for EO, is also drawing more attentions. In this context, we discuss diverse aspects of future developments in the Korean domestic system for aerial monitoring. This paper first thoroughly examines current status of national and international collaboration system arid research of aerial monitoring. It then suggests specific development plans for four critical dimensions such as research, organization, institutional systems, and strategies. Our study would facilitate systematically establishing policies for aerial monitoring in Korea and creating a domestic GEOSS(Global Earth Observation System of Systems) in the near future.

An Analysis of Earth System Understandings (ESU) of 8th-grade Students' Imagery about 'the Earth' Represented by Words and Drawings (단어와 그림으로 표현된 8학년 학생들의 '지구'에 대한 심상에서 나타난 지구계 이해 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore 8th-grade students' imageries of the Earth. We analyzed the middle school students' imageries about the Earth represented with words and drawings in Earth Systems Understanding (ESU, hereafter) framework. The students' imageries about 'the Earth' are vary by their experiences and prior-knowledge, which significantly impacts their imagery construction. Especially, the students' ESU were characterized into two aspects: One is a macroscopic view point based on full-objects of the Earth by indirect experiences and the other is everyday view point based on scene of the Earth surface and environment by direct experiences. Results revealed students' imageries about the Earth were impacted by visual experiences and those students' ESU were more represented by drawing as visual imagery than by words, formal language. The negative imageries were mainly represented through interactions of the Earth subsystems.

  • Recently, with the increase of environmental problems, the importance of environmental education has also been emphasized. Science is a subject that enormously contributes to education about the environment, education in the environment, and education for the environment. Among various fields of science, earth science has a large amount of contents related environmental education, from the perspectives that the subjects of earth science are natural and artificial changes in the earth surface. Accordingly, it is clear that earth science education can play an important role in environmental education. This is proved in the fact that the goal and specifics of earth systems education coincidence with those of environmental education. Earth science curriculum in Korea, however, contains few contents related to environmental education. Earth science education that concerns our environment as a whole will help not only catch a new interest on the field of earth science but actively participate in solving our environmental problems.
