In urban environments, the surface land impermeability fundamentally related to urban growth emphasizes the environmental problems such as the storm water peak flow (so-called the urban flooding) and the pollution. The conventional urban drainage system provides a number of temporary reservoirs intercepting and retaining surface-derived pollutants following their introduction to and deposition upon the impermeable surface. Gully-pots are common features in urban drainage systems in Korea, which were installed for draining rainwater to prevent regurgitation in rainy season and retaining larger particles, hence minimizing pipe blockage problems. When the road runoff conveying sediment enters a gully-pot, the sediment mixes with the gully liquor causing direct pollution of receiving waters. The characteristics of local sediment contamination are usually related to the types of land use activities that take place or have taken place within the area., This study was undertaken to evaluate the spatial and temporal variations of the contamination of gully-pot sediments in Seoul with respect to heavy metals such as As, Cd, Co, Cr, Ni, Pb, Cu and Zn. The heavy metal data were examined according to the land use type. In this paper, sampling sites in Seoul were divided into six groups (commercial area, industrial area, residental area, motor way, rural area, and local pollution).
Many industrial fields were constructed on the reclaimed land which was used to be a tidal land. Because the industrial fields stand on weak basement, they are likely to be influenced by surface subsidence. Therefore, the surface subsidence monitoring is required for civil protection. In this study, a novel method to monitor land displacement, PSInSAR technique, was applied to monitor the land subsidence of Incheon Port, which happened a decade ago. Although the land was reclaimed more than 20 years ago, quite a bit of deformation was observed during six years. The maximum subsidence rate reached to 30 mm/year. JERS-1 data was exploited in this study.
Precise digital elevation model (DEM) is an important issue in coastal area where DEMs in a time series are especially required. Although LIDAR system is useful in coastal regions, it is not yet popular in Korea mainly because of its high surveying cost and national security reasons. Recently, precise coastal DEM have been made using radar interferometry, waterline method. One of these methods, Spaceborne imaging radar interferometry has been widely used to measure the topography and deformation of the Earth. We acquired ALOS PALSAR FBD mode (Fine Beam Dual) data for evaluating the quality of interferograms and their coherency. The purpose of this study is construction of DEM using the ALOS PALSAR data using radar interferometry and analysis of surface characteristics by coherence and magnitude map over the Ganghwado and Siwha tidal flats and near coastal lands.
In this study, the net solar radiation fluxes at the surface are retrieved by updating an existing algorithm to be applicable for MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) observations, in which linear relationships between the solar radiation reflected from the top of atmosphere and the net surface solar radiation are employed. The results of this study have been evaluated through intercomparison with existing Clouds and the Earth's Radiant Energy System (CERES) data products and ground-based data from pyranometers at Gangneung-Wonju National University (GWNU) and the Southern Great Plains (SGP) of observatory of Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) site. Prior to the comparison of the surface radiation energy in relation to the energy balance of the earth, the radiation energy of the upper part of the atmosphere was compared. As a result, the coefficient of determination was over 0.9, showing considerable similarity, but the Root-Mean-Square-Deviation (RMSD) value was somewhat different, and the downward and net solar-radiation energy also showed similar results. The surface solar radiation data measured from pyranometers at Gangneung-Wonju National University (GWNU) and Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) observatory are used to validate the solar radiation data produced in this study. When compared to the GWNU, The results of this study show smaller RMSD values than CERES data, showing slightly better agreements with the surface data. On the other hand, when compared with the data from ARM SGP observatory, the results of this study bear slightly larger RMSD values than those for CERES. The downward and net solar radiation estimated by the algorithm of this study at a high spatial resolution are expected to be very useful in the near future after refinements on the identified problems, especially for those area without ground measurements of solar radiation.
A discussion of a method has been used with success in terrain modelling to estimate the height at any point on the land surface from irregularly distributed samples. The special requirements of terrain modelling are discussed as well as a detailed description of the algorithm and an example of its application.
In this study, we apply a three-dimensional circulation model, MOHID (MOdelo $HIDrodin{\hat{a}}mico$), and reproduce oceanic variation around the East Asian seas including Korea in 2016. Simulation results are verified by using objective analysis fields (EN4, ARMOR3D, AVISO, and SIO products) and in-situ observation data (serial oceanographic and buoy data). Verification results show that general characteristics of the water temperature, sea level anomaly, surface velocity, and mixed layer depths simulated by MOHID are similar with those of the objective analysis fields in the East Asian seas. Especially, when buoy data in the coastal areas are compared, correlation coefficients of sea surface temperature and sea level anomaly are both over 0.8 and normalized standard deviations are between 0.85 and 1.15, respectively. However, it is analyzed that additional improvement would be necessary in the representation of thermocline structure in the East Sea and strong stratification phenomena in the Yellow and South Sea in summer.

Sea surface height (SSH) around fe Korean Peninsula was investigated as a rising rate of $3.89mm\;yr^{-1}$ on the average from 1993 to 2005, which is 1.3 times higher rising rate, compared to the world ocean. In the present study, to investigate SSH changes in regional sections of the East Sea, the Yellow Sea, the South Sea, and the Korea Strait, DT-MSLA (Delayed Time-Maps of Sea Level Anomalies) with multi-satellite data (Topex/Poseidon, Jason-1, ERS, Envisat), provided by AVISO (Archiving, Validation and Interpretation of Satellite Oceanographic data), was used. The periodicity in interannual variability was dominant for $4\sim5$ year in summer, and 3 year in winter as well as an increasing trend. The amplitude and phase for the annual and semi-annual mode in SSH and SST were investigated with harmonic analysis. The geographical distribution of amplitudes for comparison of SSH and SST are slightly reverse in southwest-northeast tilted direction. The monthly SST and SSH is highly correlated correlation coefficient about 0.7 with lag of one or two months over the East Sea and the South Sea during June-August. These results suggest that the Kuroshio stream is dominant during summer over these regions.
Recently, the development of accurate gravity-meter and GPS make it possible to obtain high resolution gravity data. Though gravity data interpretation like modeling and inversion has significantly improved, gravity data processing itself has improved very little. Conventional gravity data processing removes gravity effects due to mass and height difference between base and measurement level. But, it would be a biased density model when some or whole part of anomalous bodies exist above the base level. We attempted to make a multiquadric surface of the survey area from topography with DEM (Digital Elevation Map) data. Then we constituted rectangular blocks which reflect real topography of the survey area by the multiquadric surface. Thus, we were able to carry out 3-D inversions which include information of topography. We named this technique, 3-D Gravity Terrain Inversion (3DGTI). The model test showed that the inversion model from 3DGTI made better results than conventional methods. Furthermore, the 3-dimensional model from the 3DGTI method could maintain topography and as a result, it showed more realistic geologic model. This method was also applied on real field data in Masan-Changwon area. Granitic intrusion is an important geologic characteristic in this area. This method showed more critical geological boundaries than other conventional methods. Therefore, we concluded that in the case of various rocks and rugged terrain, this new method will make better model than convention ones.
Space-borne Earth observation technique is one of the most cost effective and rapidly advancing Earth science research tools today and the potential field and micro-wave radar applications have been leading the discipline. The traditional optical imaging systems including the well known Landsat, NOAA - AVHRR, SPOT, and IKONOS have steadily improved spatial imaging resolution but increasing cloud covers have the major deterrent. The new Earth observation satellites ENVISAT (launched on March 1 2002, specifically for Earth environment observation), ALOS (planned for launching in 2004 - 2005 period and ALOS stands for Advanced Land Observation Satellite), and RADARSAT-II (planned for launching in 2005) all have synthetic aperture radar (SAR) onboard, which all have partial or fully polarimetric imaging capabilities. These new types of polarimetric imaging radars with repeat orbit interferometric capabilities are opening up completely new possibilities in Earth system science research, in addition to the radar altimeter and scatterometer. The main advantage of a SAR system is the all weather imaging capability without Sun light and the newly developed interferometric capabilities, utilizing the phase information in SAR data further extends the observation capabilities of directional surface covers and neotectonic surface displacements. In addition, if one can utilize the newly available multiple frequency polarimetric information, the new generation of space-borne SAR systems is the future research tool for Earth observation and global environmental change monitoring. The potential field strength decreases as a function of the inverse square of the distance between the source and the observation point and geophysicists have traditionally been reluctant to make the potential field observation from any space-borne platforms. However, there have recently been a number of potential field missions such as ASTRID-2, Orsted, CHAMP, GRACE, GOCE. Of course these satellite sensors are most effective for low spatial resolution applications. For similar objects, AMPERE and NPOESS are being planned by the United States and France. The Earth science disciplines which utilize space-borne platforms most are the astronomy and atmospheric science. However in this talk we will focus our discussion on the solid Earth and physical oceanographic applications. The geodynamic applications actively being investigated from various space-borne platforms geological mapping, earthquake and volcano .elated tectonic deformation, generation of p.ecise digital elevation model (DEM), development of multi-temporal differential cross-track SAR interferometry, sea surface wind measurement, tidal flat geomorphology, sea surface wave dynamics, internal waves and high latitude cryogenics including sea ice problems.
The CCD Earth Images Experiment(CEIE) is one of the main payload of the KITSAT-1. Since it was launched on Oct. 10, 1992, the CEIE has taken more than 500 images on the Earth surface world-wide so far. An image from the space is very different from a feature on the real Earth surface due to various radiometric and geometric distortions. Preprocessing to remove those distortions has to take place before the images data are processed and analyzed further for various applications. This paper describes the procedure to perform preprocessing including radiometric and geometric correction.e-processing system. The GCP marking using this technique showed a sufficient accuracy for KITSAT1,2 narrow camera images.
