Searching for Electromagnetic Counterpart of Gravitational Wave Source with KMTNet

  • After first identification of electromagnetic counterpart of gravitational wave source (GW170817), era of multi-messenger astronomy has begun. For specifying coordinate, magnitude, and host galaxy information, optical follow-up observation of GW source becomes important. With following engineering run and O3 run of LIGO and VIRGO starting in March 2019, we present searching strategy for optical counterpart of GW source using KMTNet. 24 hours monitoring system and large field of view (4 square-degree) of KMTNet are advantage to discover a transient like GW event. By performing tiling observation of high probability area in GW localization map, we expect to observe early light-curve of GW optical counterpart. After identification, follow-up observation with various KMTNet bands and other telescopes like Gemini and UKIRT will also be performed. We will study collision mechanism, progenitor, and characteristics of host galaxy using observation data of GW source.

Rendezvous Mission to Apophis: I. Mission Overview

  • An asteroid is important for understanding the condition of our solar system in early-stage because an asteroid, considered as a building block of the solar system, preserves the information when our solar system was formed. It has been continuously flowing into the near-Earth space, and then some asteroids have a probability of impacting Earth. Some asteroids have valuable minerals and volatiles for future resources in space activity. Korean government clarified, in the 3rd promotion plan for space activity, an asteroid sample return mission by the mid-2030s. However, it is almost impossible to do so based on only a single experience of an exploration mission to the Moon, Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter, which will be launched in mid-2022. We propose a Rendezvous Mission to Apophis(RMA), beneficial in terms of science, impact hazardous, resource, and technical readiness for the space exploration of Korea.

  • Objective: This study aims to investigate the effects of a learning cycle model-based early childhood education program using physical motion on young children's scientific inquiry ability, scientific attitude, object manipulation ability and spatial ability. Methods: The subjects of this study were 60 five-year-old children who were attending K-G City Childcare Center. The SPSS Window 21.0 program and content analysis method were used, and post-validation Tukey was conducted to examine the differences between the one-way ANOVA and the group. Results: Activities using body movement were practiced systematically based on the circle learning. Children could revise their pre-concept and concept of error by interacting with other children, teachers and the environment. Furthermore, children were attaining new knowledge while they were doing body movement activities, assessing and applying them to actual activities. Conclusion/Implications: This study is investigated a cyclic learning-based early childhood science education program using physical motion, which has significance in systematic and practical early childhood centered education for young children.

수준별 유아수업설계모형이 유아교사의 전문성 발달에 미치는 효과 (The Effect of Differentiated Instruction Design Model for Early Childhood on Development of Teacher's Professionalism)

  • This study which is an alternative exploration for improving the quality level of instruction considering the perception of the teachers in early childhood education field on instructional design is to develop Differentiated Instructional Design Model coincides with the purpose of differentiated instruction curricula and with instructional design principles, and to find out whether the model has significant effect on development of teacher's professionalism. With these purposes, the perception of 343 teachers from early childhood education institutions are investigated, and after component variables are set by drawing the instructional design model available in early childhood education field and reviewing the literature of differentiated instruction model, the Differentiated Instructional design Model for Early Childhood are developed based on FGI(Focus Group Interview) expert evaluation. The experimental study of 88 teachers working in childcare facilities was implemented for effectiveness verification. As a result, first, most teachers consider the priority on making the lesson plans as the development of early childhood and Kindergarten Educational Subjects, and they realize the development of instructional design model which contributes on lesson planning and implementation is much needed. Second, the Differentiated Instructional design Model for Early Childhood are developed, which consists of the cyclic process - pre-lesson phase, lesson implementation phase, and assessment phase -based on development characteristics of early childhood. Third, the experiment of the developed model showed that the scores of experimental group is significantly higher than those of comparative group in knowledge and technique development aspect, and self-understanding development aspect among the aspects of development of teacher's professionalism.

Do Galaxy Mergers Enhance Star Formation Rate in Nearby Galaxies?

  • We present our study of the correlation between star formation rate(SFR) and merging activities of nearby galaxies(d<150Mpc). Our study uses 265 UV-selected galaxies which are not classified as AGN. The UV selection is made using the GALEX Atlas of Galaxies (Gil de Paz+07) and the updated UV catalog of nearby galaxies (Bai+15). We use deep R band optical images reaching to $1{\sigma}$ surface brightness detection limit ${\sim}27mag/arcsec^2$ to classify merger features by visual inspection. We also estimated unobscured SFR($SFR_{NUV}$) and obscured SFR($SFR_{W4}$) using Near-UV continuum and 22 micron Mid-IR luminosity respectively as a indicator of star forming activity. The fraction of galaxies with merger features in each SFR bin is obtained to see if how the fraction of galaxies with merging features($F_m$) changes as a function of SFR. As a result, for 203 late type galaxies(LTGs), we found that merger fraction increases from ~8% up to 50% with $SFR_{W4}$, while for 229 LTGs $SFR_{NUV}$ shows relatively consistent fraction(~18%) of merger fraction. For early type galaxies(ETGs), we could also find no significant correlation between $F_m$ and SFR(both $SFR_{NUV}$ and $SFR_{W4}$). This result suggests that a main driver of star forming activity of UV bright galaxies, especially for obscured late types, is mergers.

네거티브 설계 개념을 이용한 함정 설계영역탐색법 개발 (Development of Design Space Exploration for Warship using the Concept of Negative Design)

  • 예술에서 네거티브 공간은 관심 있는 피사체 주위 공간과 여러 피사체 사이의 공간으로 정의된다. 네거티브 공간은 때로는 이미지의 "실질적" 주제로서 예술적 효과에 사용되기 때문에 예술적 구성요소 중 하나이다. 회화에서는 표현하고자 하는 사물의 배경을 음각으로 터치하는 화법으로 필요한 부분은 남기고 불필요한 부분을 터치하여 독특한 질감과 실루엣의 느낌을 주는 회화기법을 말한다. 예술에서 그것의 개념처럼 설계에서 네거티브 공간은 기술적으로 실행하기 어려운 설계범위를 직관적으로 파악하는데 유용할 수 있다. 두 영역 간의 유사성은 설계영역탐색에 네거티브 개념의 도입을 이끌었다. 통계분석과 시각화분석을 도구로 하는 설계영역탐색은 더 효율적인 의사결정을 지원하고 초기단계 시스템 설계의 방향에 대한 의미 있는 통찰력을 제공할 수 있다. 복잡하고 많은 양의 데이터를 요약한 시각화된 정보는 인간의 인지시스템과 동적인 상호작용을 보장하기 때문이다. 기술적으로 실행할 수 없거나 위험성이 높은 설계공간을 피할 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 실행 가능한 설계공간을 정의하는 데 유용하다. 논문에서 적용 예를 통해 네거티브 설계 개념 기반 설계영역탐색법의 활용 가능성을 살펴본다.

조기진급 및 조기졸업이 대학 조기입학자의 사회, 정서적 적응에 미치는 효과 (The Effect of Grade Skipping and Early Graduation on Social and Emotional Adjustments of Early College Entrants)

  • 본 연구는 조기진급 및 조기졸업제를 활성화하기 위해 지금까지 교육현장에서 본 제도를 적극적으로 활용하지 못하는 이유를 학생의 사회 정서적 측면에 초점을 두어 분석하고 실증적으로 자료를 제시하였다. K 대학교에 재학 중인 52명의 학생을 대상으로 자아존중감검사(Coopersmith, 1967, 1981, 1984)와 학교생활에 대한 지각검사(이미순, 이현주, 2006)를 실시하였다. 조기진급 및 조기졸업의 유무에 따른 자아존중감을 연구하기 위해 학생의 GPA를 공변량으로 설정한 후, 다변량 공분산 분석(MANCOVA)를 실시하였고, 대학에 입학하기 전 고등학교 생활에 대한 지각의 차이는 다변량 분산 분석(MANOVA)를 통해 조사하였다. 연구결과, 사회 정서적측면에 대한 우려와 달리 조기진급 및 조기졸업에 의한 자아존중감에서 유의한 집단간 차이는 나타나지 않아, 조기진급 및 조기졸업을 한 후 대학에 입학한 학생들이 자신을 부정적으로 지각하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 오히려 조기진급 및 조기졸업자들이 일반적으로 자신을 보다 긍정적으로 지각하였고, 고등학교 재학 중에 조기졸업에 대한 기회와 정보가 많았다고 응답하였다.

둔상성 외상에 의한 심장파열에 대한 수술적 치험 (Surgical Treatment of Blunt Traumatic Cardiac Rupture - Two Case Reports -)

  • Although blunt traumatic cardiac rupture is an uncommon injury, it can be associated with a high mortality rate. Two cases of cardiac rupture in blunt trauma patients are described herein. In those cases, applications of mechanical support devices such as ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) and early surgery for exploration under cardiopulmonary bypass may be helpful for treating blunt chest trauma patients.
