  • NiCr thin films were fabricated by thermal evaporation method using NiCr alloy as evaporating source. NiCr thin films were annealed at various temperatures in air atmosphere in order to investigate effects of annealing conditions on phase change, composition, and microstructures of NiCr films. Typical multilayer was formed after annealing in air atmosphere. This results from the diffusion and oxidation of Cr toward surface during annealing. In the case of annealing at 700$^{\circ}C$, large columnar grains of NiO were formed on Cr-oxide layer through the diffusion and oxidation of Ni over Cr-oxide layer. Especially, NiO layer was formed additionally on surface, sustaining the underlayer structure with the formation of porous Ni layer.

  • To recycle the electric arc furnace (EAF) dust as a ceramic raw materials, the leaching concentrations of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Cr, Cd) were analysed with various pH and mixing ratios for EAF dust and EAF dust-clay mixtures. The evaporation amounts of the some heavy metals were evaluated by measuring their total concentrations in the sintered bodies of EAF dust-clay mixtures with various mixing ratio and sintering temperature. Toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP) test was conducted for evaluating the chemical stabilities of the heavy metal elements. Leaching concentrations of heavy metal ions shows minimum leaching concentration at the pH 10. Evaporation amount of heavy metals in the sintered bodies were evaluated for the mixtures of pH 10 depenidng on mixing ratio and sintering temperature. Evaporation of heavy metal components were increased with increasing the sintering temperature and contents of the EAF dust. The evaporation of the heavy metal components in EAF dust was effectively suppressed by increasing the clay content. The leaching concentrations of heavy metal components were decreased with increasing clay content and temperature.

  • It is known that the Q/C(Quality Control) in the early age of portland cement concrete(PCC) pavement gives a huge effect on long term pavement performance. Thus, many studies regarding the construction of PCC pavement have focused on how to assure construction quality at the early age stage. Curing is one of the most important factor in Q/C of PCC pavement. Membrane curing that protects the evaporation of moisture by placing an impermeable layer on the slab surface is the most common practice for curing the PCC pavement. In order to improve the membrane curing practice, the rate of curing compound should be optimized. However, the optimum rate of curing compound considering Korean weather and environmental conditions has not been specified in the pavement construction specifications. In this study, a proper application rate was recommended in terms of minimizing evaporation with several full-scale tests where various rates of curing compound have been applied. Four test sites on the expressway were enlisted during the summer of 2002 and 2003. Application rates tested were in the range of $0. The rate of evaporation, the temperature pattern of the slab and the pulse velocity of concrete surface have been monitored at each test construction. The result from this study showed that the rate of current construction was approximately $160ml/m^2$ and that approximately $400ml/m^2$ of curing application was recommended as the proper rate for minimizing the moisture evaporation.

  • We fabricated the ZnO (zinc oxide)/$SiO_2$ (silicon dioxide) branch hierarchical nanostructures by the e-beam evaporation of $SiO_2$ onto the surface of the electrochemically grown ZnO nanorods on Si substrate, which leads to the self-assembled $SiO_2$ nanorods by oblique angle deposition between vapor flux and vertically aligned ZnO nanorods. In order to investigate the effects of $SiO_2$ deposition on the morphology and optical property of ZnO/$SiO_2$ branch hierarchical nanostructures, the evaporation time of $SiO_2$ was varied under a fixed deposition rate of 0.5 nm/s. The vertically aligned ZnO nanorods on Si substrate exhibited a low reflectance of <10% in the wavelength range of 300~535 nm. For ZnO/$SiO_2$ branch hierarchical nanostructures at 100 s of evaporation time of $SiO_2$, the more improved antireflective property was achieved. From these results, ZnO/$SiO_2$ branch hierarchical nanostructures are very promising for optoelectronic and photovoltaic device applications.

  • The experimental characteristics for fry drying method was investigated using low-rank coal with a high moisture content. Final temperature, mixing ratio between coal and kerosene, content of coal or kerosene, total weight of the mixture and mixing methods were varied to find out the optimum conditions by measuring moisture of coal. Evaporation of the coal moisture was not completed below $120^{\circ}C$ of final temperature. The amount of moisture was not significantly different over $130^{\circ}C$. Coal moisture was easily evaporated by increasing coal content, which showed that the moisture evaporation could be significantly enhanced by the remove of evaporated moisture from kerosene rather than by heat transfer to the coal. High total weight of the mixture resulted in lowering moisture content of coal with long evaporation time. On the other hand, low total weight was difficult to reduce the moisture below a certain level, but could reduce evaporation time. Thus, it can concluded that kerosene content should be lowered to the extent maintaining the mobility of the mixture in order to enhance evaporation. It was also observed that evacuation and mixing by using nitrogen could improve drying of coal.

  • [ $WO_3$ ] and $NiO-WO_3$ thin films were deposited on a Si (100) substrate by using high vacuum thermal evaporation. The effects of various film thicknesses on the surface morphology $WO_3$ and $NiO-WO_3$ thin films were investigated. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) were employed to characterize the deposited films. The results suggest that as $WO_3$ thin films became thick, their grain grew up to a $0.6{\mu}m$. On the other hand, NiO-doping to $WO_3$ thin films inhibited the grain growth five times less than undoped $WO_3$ thin films. This results show that NiO doping inhibited the grain growing of $WO_3$ thin films. Also, the variation of NOx sensitivity $(R_{NOx}/R_{air})$ to the thickness of $WO_3$ and $NiO-WO_3$ thin films were measured according to the thickness change of thin films and the working temperature of sensor in 5ppm NOx gas. As a result, $NiO-WO_3$ thin films showed more excellent properties than $WO_3$ thin films for NOx sensitivity.

  • In this study, preconceptions held by chemistry major secondary school science teachers were searched in relation to explanations of water evaporation phenomena with phase equilibrium diagrams. 25 chemistry major science teachers were selected to complete questionnaires developed in this study and 6 among of them were selected to participate in follow-up interviews. Among these, 10 participants were selected for an evaluation of the change of their preconceptions through lessons developed in this study. From the results, it was found that many teachers believed that the phase equilibrium diagram could not explain water evaporation phenomena. They also thought that there was no relation between vapor pressure and the vertical axis of the phase equilibrium diagram. However, after the lessons in earth science, they recognized that the vapor pressure curve of the phase equilibrium diagram could be explained by adopting a saturated vapor curve. Because they had known the process of application the conceptions of saturated situation, nonsaturated situation, process of equilibrium movement in saturated vapor curve. They could understand natural phenomena such as evaporation with the phase equilibrium diagram through a change in their conceptions as guided from science lessons integrating earth science and chemistry.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to evaluate bonding efficacy by means of measuring the effect of remained solvent on Degree of conversion(DC) and ${\mu}TBS$ and FE-SEM examination. Materials and Methods: Two 2-step total etching adhesives and two single-step self etching adhesives were used in this study. First, volume weight loss of 4 dentin adhesives were measured using weighting machine in process of time in normal conditions and calculate degree of evaporation (DE). Reaction/reference intensity ratio were measured using micro-Raman spectroscopy and calculate DC according to DE. Then 2 experimental groups were prepared according to air-drying methods (under, over) and control group was prepared to manufacturer's instruction. Total 12 groups were evaluated by means of micro tensile bond strength and FE-SEM examination. Results: Degree of evaporation (DE) was increased as time elapsed but different features were observed according to the kind of solvents. Acetone based adhesive showed higher DE than ethanol and butanol based adhesive. Degree of conversion (DC) was increased according to DE except for $S^3$ bond. In ${\mu}TBS$ evaluation, bond strength was increased by additional air-drying. Large gaps and droplets were observed in acetone based adhesives by FE-SEM pictures. Conclusions: Additional air-drying is recommended for single-step self etching adhesive but careful consideration is required for 2-step total etching adhesive because of oxygen inhibition layer. Evaporation method is carefully chose and applied according to the solvent type.

  • This study was designed to gain practical data on the use of soil conditioners for more efficient water managements and to establish the optimum levels of structural properties for soil conditioning. A sandy loam and a silt loam soil were each treated with two different soil conditioners, hydrophobic Bitumen or hydrophilic Uresol. The perspex tube 34 cm long were packed homogeneously with air dried soil up to 2 cm below the top, then covered over 2 cm of treated or untreated aggregates. The infiltration rate into the soil columns was measured under simulated rainfall condition. The evaporation study was carried out in the wind tunnel, and the changes of soil moisture distribution of the columns following and during the evaporation were determined by a gamma ray scanner. The infiltration rate of water into the soil column was increased to 18.7-50.8% by the Uresol treatment but it was decreased to less than 25% of control by the Bitumen treatment. Evaporation was decreased to 22.0-68.1% by the Bitumen treatment and to 38.7-68.4% by the Uresol treatment. The water use efficiency of Uresol treated column was increased to more than twice as much as that of untreated soil. Aggregate stability and wetting angle were related to water infiltration and evaporation. A positive and highly significant logarismic relationship was found between the infiltration rate and stability index-wetting angle, evaporation rate and instability index-wetting angle. It was considered that the structural stability is more important than wetting angle. This is true because the structural stability is always positively correlated to water saving, however wettability is positively correlated to the infiltration, and negatively correlated to water saving during the evaporation.
