  • The purpose of this study was to investigate Earth Systems Understandings (Mayer, 1991) and Earth Systems meaning generation reported by science-talented students who participated in a geological field trip. The eight (4 female and 4 male students) field trip reports were randomly selected among all the reports written by twenty eighth-grade students who joined Shiwha-Lake field trip in Korea. The three-step program, including preparation, field trip, and summary, was provided to the students in order to facilitate meaningful learning through outdoor teaming activities. Seven Earth Systems Understandings and thematic types (Keys, 1999) were used to analyze the reports. The results of this study indicated thai aesthetic views and stewardship toward the Earth, which were the most distinguishing characteristics in Earth Systems Education, were reflected on most of the reports. The results also showed that the students tried to represent their understandings in such a type as meaning extension, meaning enhancement, or meaning elaboration. Overall, many students used 'knowledge-telling' process with a long list of observations and facts, whereas a few students used higher-order 'knowledge-transforming' process by coordinating their findings with interpretations and reasoning in their writings.

  • Siberian flying squirrel, an endangered species in South Korea, is distributed through major mountain regions of South Korea. The number of Siberian flying squirrel(Pteromys volans) in South Korea has decreased and their habitats are fragmented and isolated because of anthropogenic activities. So far no molecular genetic data has, however, been available for their conservation and management. To obtain better information concerning genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of the Siberian flying squirrel in South Korea, we examined 14 individuals from South Korea, 7 individuals from Russia, and 5 individuals from northeastern China along with previously published 29 haplotypes for 1,140 bp of the mtDNA cytochrome b gene. The 14 new individuals from South Korea had 7 haplotypes which were not observed in the regions of Russia and Hokkaido. The level of genetic diversity(0.616%) in the South Korean population was lower than that in eastern Russia(0.950%). The geographical distribution of mtDNA haplotypes and reduced median network confirmed that there are three major lineages of Siberian flying squirrel, occupying; Far Eastern, northern Eurasia, and the island of Hokkaido. The South Korean population only slightly distinct from the Eurasia, and eastern Russian population, and is part of the lineage Far Eastern. Based on these, we suggest that the South Korean population could be considered to belong to one partial ESU(Far Eastern) of three partial ESUs but a different management unit. However, the conservation priorities should be reconfirmed by nuclear genetic marker and ecological data.

  • 2,3-Di-(2'-hydroxyethoxy)-4'-nitrostilbene (3) was prepared and condensed with terephthaloyl chloride, adipoyl chloride, and sebacoyl chloride to yield novel Y-type polyesters (4-6) containing the NLO-chromophores 2,3-dioxynitrostilbenyl groups, which constituted parts of the polymer backbones. Polymers 4-6 were soluble in common organic solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. Polymers 4-5 showed thermal stability up to $300^{\circ}C$ in thermogravimetric analysis with glass transition temperatures $(T_g)$, obtained from differential scanning calorimetry, in the range $81-95^{\circ}C$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients $(d_{33})$ of the poled polymer films at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength were around $3.68{\times}10^{-9}$ esu. The dipole alignment exhibited high thermal stability up to $T_g$, and there was no SHG decay below $T_g$ due to the partial main-chain character of the polymer structure.

  • New Y-type polyester (3) containing nitrophenylazoresorcinoxy groups as NLO chromophores, which are components of the polymer backbone, was prepared and characterized. Polyester 3 is soluble in common organic solvents such as N,N-dimethylformamide and acetone. It shows a thermal stability up to $240^{\circ}C$ in thermogravimetric analysis with glass-transition temperature ($T_g$) obtained from differential scanning calorimetry near $116^{\circ}C$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient ($d_{33}$) of poled polymer film at the 1064 nm fundamental wavelength is around $4.63{\times}10^{-9}$ esu. The dipole alignment exhibits a thermal stability even at $4^{\circ}C$ higher than $T_g$, and there is no SHG decay below $120^{\circ}C$ due to the partial main-chain character of polymer structure, which is acceptable for NLO device applications.

The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficients ($d_{33}$) of poled polymer films at 1064 nm fundamental wavelength were around $5.82{\times}10^{-9}$ esu. The dipole alignment exhibited high thermal stability up to $T_g$, and there was no SHG decay below $140{^{\circ}C}$ due to the partial main-chain character of the polymer structure, which was acceptable for nonlinear optical device applications.

  • Optical nonlinearity of laser heated Si with thickness of 160$\mu$m is investigated by pump-probe method. Si is heated by pdsed Nd:YAG laser of $TEM_{00}$-mode with pulse duration of 180$\mu$sec. Temperature change is monitored by observing transmittance change of probe light whose wavelength lies near band gap of Si. It is found that temperature rise is linearly proportional to incident laser intensity and the maximum temperat~re increment is measured to be $16^{\circ}C$ for the maximum incident intensity of 25KW/$\textrm{cm}^2$. From these results, the third order nonlinear susceptibility .d3) at the wavelength of 1.06$\mu$mis estimated to be $6.6\times10^{-5}$esu due to laser heating.

  • 3,4-Bis-(3,4-dicarboxyphenylcarboxyethoxy)-4'-nitrostilbene dianhydride was prepared and reacted with 4,4'-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)dianiline to yield a novel Y-type polyimide containing the 3,4-dioxynitrostilbenyl group as an NLO-chromophore, which constituted part of the polymer backbone. The resulting polyimide was soluble in polar solvents such as acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide. The polymer exhibited good thermal stability up to $370^{\circ}C$ in the thermogravimetric analysis. The glass-transition temperature ($T_g$) obtained from the differential scanning calorimetry thermogram was near to $153^{\circ}C$. The second harmonic generation (SHG) coefficient ($d_{33}$) of the poled polymer film at the fundamental wavelength of $1064\;cm^{-1}$ was around $2.15\;{\times}\;10^{-8}\;esu$ (9.01 pm/V). The dipole alignment exhibited exceptionally high thermal stability even at a temperature $30^{\circ}C$ above the $T_g$, and there was no SHG decay below $180^{\circ}C$ because of the partial main chain character of the polymer structure.

  • The title compound of nicotinato lead(II) complex [Pb$(C_5H_4NCOO)_2$] has been optimized at B3LYP/LANL2DZ and HF/LANL2DZ levels of theory. The calculated results show that the lead(II) ion adopts 2- coordinate geometry, which is the same as its crystal structure and different from the 4-coordinate geometry of isonicotinato lead(II) complex. Atomic charge distributions indicate that during forming the title compound, each nicotinic acid ion transfers their negative charges to central lead(II) ion. The electronic spectra calculated by B3LYP/LANL2DZ level show that there exist two absorption bands, which have some red shifts compared with those of isonicotinato lead(II) complex and the electronic transitions are mainly derived from intraligand $\pi$ -$\pi$ transition and ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) transition. CIS-HF method is not suitable for the system studied here. The thermodynamic properties of the title compound at different temperatures have been calculated and corresponding relations between the properties and temperature have also been obtained. The second order optical nonlinearity was calculated, and the molecular hyperpolarizability was $1.147754{\times}10^{-30}$ esu.
