  • The systems associated with the ESS never stop. It runs 24 hours everyday. The system must be managed to run. The ESS system should perform normally even if the power IT equipment fails or communication failure occurs. Therefore, there is a need for a system that actively addresses, manages and controls the high precision power data of the ESS, even if a variety of failures occur. I would like to propose a power management communication unit to cope with the occurrence of communication failure. This paper also includes an integrated management system that can perform micro grid site management, maintenance and monitoring for the ESS system connected with the solar power generation facility.

Analysis on Insulation and Protection Characteristics of Grid Connected ESS in Ground/Short-Circuit Fault (지/단락실증시험에서 MW급 계통연계형 ESS 절연/보호시스템 성능 분석에 관한 연구)

  • With recent ESS (Energy Storage System) fire accident, the fault protection performance is becoming more important. However, there has never been any experiments with the protection performance on the faults in the ESS system level. In this study, the effect of AC ground fault and IGBT (Insulated Gate Bipolar mode Transistor) short-circuit failure on MW class ESS was performed experimentally for the first time in the world. First of all, the effect of the AC single line ground fault on battery was analyzed. Moreover, the transient voltage was investigated as a function of the battery capacity and the power level. Finally, the breaking capability and insulation performance of ESS were examined under PCS short-circuit fault condition. Through the tests, it was found that ESS protection system safely blocked the faulty current regardless of the faults, whereas the electronic parts such as IGBT and MC (Magnetic Contactor) were broken by the fault current. Also, the electrical breakdown in ESS resulted from the transient voltage during the protection process.

A Study on the Development of Fire Extinguishing Agent and Extinguishing System for ESS Fire (ESS 화재전용 소화약제 및 소화시스템 개발에 관한 연구)

  • This paper presents a study on the development of a fire extinguishing agent and extinguishing system for an energy storage system (ESS) fire. The fire extinguishing agent designed to extinguish an ESS fire is a highly permeable fire extinguisher that reduces the surface tension and viscosity while bringing about cooling action. This is the main extinguishing effect of this type of wetting agent, which displays the characteristics of fire extinguishing agents used for penetrating the battery cells inside the ESS module. For the fire extinguishing system, a local application system was designed to suppress fire on a rack-by-rack basis. A 360° rotating nozzle was inserted into the rear hall of the ESS module, and general nozzles were installed in the rack to maximize the fire extinguishing effect. The fire extinguishing agent was strongly discharged by virtue of the gas release pressure. Experiments on fire suppression performance with ESS module 1 unit and module 3 units showed that all visible flames were extinguished in 8 s and 9 s, respectively, by the fire extinguishing agent. In addition, based on confirming reignition for 600 s after the fire extinguishing agent was exhausted, it was confirmed that the ESS fire was completely extinguished without reignition in all fire suppression performance experiments.

  • Recently, the government is promoting the new renewable energy spread and expansion policy. To this end, the investment and the research is ongoing on the core of the ESS (Energy Storage System) for the Smart Grid that is being spread around the industrialized countries. US and European countries have also conducted a variety of ESS related systems maintenance and improvement in order to induce the activation of the ESS industry. On the other hand, our country has no law and institutional foundation for the introduction of activation ESS, and there is no objective basis for the economic impact of the introduction of the ESS. Therefore, spread and activation of the ESS is not properly conducted. In this paper, the economics of the ESS based on the Korea electric pricing system for the spread and activation of the ESS effectively proposes a technique for analysis. To do this, define the ESS operating model, and propose the best economic analysis method economic analysis comparing each operating model.

  • ESS(Energy Storage System) is an important source that keeps power supply stable and utilizes electricity efficiently. For example, ESS contributes to resolve power supply imbalance, stabilize new renewable energy output and regulate frequency. ESS is predicted to be expanded to 55.9GWh of installed capacity by 2023, which is 30 times more than that of 2014. To raise competitiveness of domestic ESS industry in this increasing world market, we have disseminated load-shift ESS for continuous power supply imbalance with FR ESS, and also necessity to secure domestic track record is required. However in case of FR ESS, utility of installing thermal power plant is generally generated within 5% range of rated capacity, so that scalability of domestic market is low without dramatic increase of thermal power plant. Necessity of load-shift ESS dissemination is also decreasing effected by surplus backup power securement policy, raising demand for new dissemination model. New dissemination model is promising for $CO_2$ reduction effect in spite of intermittent output. By stabilizing new renewable energy output in connection with new renewable energy, and regulating system input timing of new renewable energy generation rate, it is prospected model for 'post-2020' regime and energy industry. This research presents a policy alternatives of REC multiplier calculation method to induce investment after outlining PV-connected ESS charge/discharge mode to reduce GHG emission, This alternative is projected to utilize GHG emission reduction methodology for 'Post-2020' regime, big issue of new energy policy.

  • The ESS load test device (ELTD) can store and exchange electrical energy during the load test of an emergency generator. On the other hand, it is difficult to commercialize ELTDs based on Li-ion batteries because of the high initial cost, which is higher than a load bank test. If the trade of electrical energy stored in ELTD during the test of an emergency generator is considered, it may be possible to commercialize the ELTD. Therefore, this paper proposes an economic model of ELTD composed of the costs and benefits by considering electrical energy trade to perform accurately economic evaluations of an ELTD. From the simulation results of the economic evaluations of an ELTD and the load bank method, it was found that the commercialization of ELTD is possible when the trade in electrical energy in ELTDs is considered.

  • In this paper, the ESS(Energy Storage System) is interconnected in order to reduce the maximum load in the distribution system and the target location of the ESS is set to be close to the rated voltage. We also applied the weights to nodes with large capacity and number of customers in the system. In the future, the interconnected location of the ESS was determined until 2029 in consideration of the load increase rated of the system. We propose a cooperative decision algorithm of interconnected location of ESS for Power Distribution System.

  • 전 세계적으로 반복되는 전력부족현상과 전력설비 노후화에 따른 공급부족에 대응하기 위하여 ESS(Energy Storage System)가 크게 주목 받고 있다. ESS는 에너지를 저장하였다가 필요시 에너지를 공급하는 장치로, 안정적이고 효율적인 에너지 수급이 가능하다. 세계적으로 ESS에 대한 연구 및 개발이 활발히 이루어지고 있다. 더불어 각 나라별 다양한 ESS 보급 및 지원 정책으로 더욱 탄력을 받고 있다. 하지만 각 제조사별 상이한 ESS 규격으로 사용자 요구에 따른 ESS 구성 및 운영에 어려움을 겪고 있다. 따라서 제조사별로 상이한 부품 간 인터페이스 규격을 수용할 수 있는 개방형 ESS 시스템 기술이 필요하다. 본 고에서는 제조사별로 상이한 부품 간 정보를 수용할 수 있는 프로파일 기반의 개방형 ESS 시스템 기술을 알아보고 개방형 ESS를 위한 프로파일을 소개한다.

Power Allocation Method for Multiple ESS Control Considering SOC Balancing in Microgrids (마이크로그리드에서 SOC균형을 고려한 ESS의 충·방전 전력배분 방법)

  • In this paper, multiple ESS(Energy Storage System) control strategy for microgrids is presented. Installation of ESS becomes mandatory when microgrids are used to supply high quality power to the loads. The one of main functions of the ESS is to maintain power balance. However ESS has limitation of its capacity and instantaneous injecting power. Power allocation method based on SOC(State Of Charge) of each ESS is proposed. P-Q control is employed as the basic control strategy for the distributed ESSs. By using the proposed method, the coefficients in the conventional P-Q control method are modified. The ESSs with higher SOC inject more active power, while those with lower SOC inject less, leading to more balanced SOC levels among the ESSs. The proposed method is demonstrated by simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC.
