Electro-Rheological (ER) fluid is a class of functional fluid whose apparent viscosity can be varied by the applied electric field strength. The ER fluid is classified into two types; one is a dispersive fluid and the other is a homogeneous. Dispersive ER fluid is a colloidal suspension of fine semiconducting particles in a dielectric liquid and liquid crystal (LC) is classed as homogeneous type ER fluid. LC has been originally developed for some electronic display devices. Various mechanical components applying ER fluid have been developed, and the their performance typically depends on the characteristics of ER fluid which have generally been evaluated by a rotational viscometer. However, the ER fluid introduced into various mechanical components undergoes not only simple shear flow but press flow or oscillating flow. For the evaluation of ER fluid, the authors developed an reciprocating type viscometer. The amplitude is controlled on 5 mm at the frequency from 50 to 1000 Hz. In the present paper, the performance of several types of ER fluid is evaluated by the reciprocating type viscometer and compared with those evaluated by a rotational viscometer.
The electrical and rheological properties pertaining to the electrorheological (ER) behavior of chitosan derivatives, chitosan, chitosan ammonium salt and chitosan phosphate suspensions in silicone oil were investigated. Chitosan derivative suspensions showed a typical ER response (Bingham flow behavior) upon application of an electric field. However, chitosan phosphate suspension exhibited an excellent shear yield stress compared with chitosan and chitosan ammonium salt suspensions. The difference in behavior results from the difference in the conductivity of the disperse phases due to the difference of their polarizability. The shear stress for the chitosan, chitosan ammonium salt and chitosan phosphate suspensions exhibited a linear dependence on the volume fraction of particles and 1.18 ,1.41 and 1.67 powers of the electric field. On the basis of the experimental results, the newly synthesized chitosan derivative suspensions found to be an ER fluid.

This paper presents dynamic modeling and controller design of a tracked vehicle installed with the double-rod type ERSU(electro-rheological suspension unit). A 16 DOF(degree-of-freedom) model for the tracked vehicle is established by Lagrangian method. After showing the spring and damping characteristics of the proposed ERSU, equivalent 2 DOF 1/12 tracked vehicle model is then formulated by regarding the spring and viscous damping coefficients under the static state as constant values. A robust LSDP(loop-shaping design procedure) $H_{\infty}$ controller compensating spring and damping parameter variations is then designed in order to suppress unwanted vibration of the vehicle. The control responses such as vertical and pitch acceleration are presented in time domain.
A semiconducting poly(naphthalene quinone) radical (PNQR) was synthesized from Friedel-Craft acylation between naphthalene and phthalic anhydride and used as dispersing particles of a dry-base electrorheological (ER) material in silicone oil. Under an applied electric field (E), the dynamic yield stress (${\tau}_{dyn}$) of this ER fluid, obtained from a steady shear experiment with a controlled shear rate mode, was observed to increase with $E^{1.45}$ Based on this relationship, we propose a universal correlation curve for shear viscosity, which is independent of E using a scaling analysis.
A two-degree-of-freedom quarter-car model is used as the basis for LQ and the proposed controller design for a semi-active suspension. The LQ controller results in the best rms performance trade-offs(as defined by performance index) between ride, handling and packaging requirements. In LQ controller, however, the conflict between road holding and ride comfort remains. The adaptive semi-active suspension control based on the road frequency are introduced in this paper. With this method, the trade-off between road holding and ride comfort can be relaxed. The road frequency is estimated by wavelet transform if rattle space signal. The simulation results show that the proposed controller is superior to the conventional LQ controller.
Electrorheological fluids (ERF) are suspensions which show an abrupt increase in rheological properties under electric fields. The rheological response is very rapid and reversible when the electric field is imposed and/or removed. Therefore, there are many practical applications using the ERF. The purpose of the present study is to examine the flow characteristics of ERF. First, the microscopic behavior of the ER suspension structure between two fixed parallel-plate brass electrodes applied dc high voltage for the stationary and flow of the ERF was investigated by flow visualization. The electrical and rheological properties of zeolite based ERF were reported.
반전도성 polyaniline의 유도체들로서 poly(aniline-co-sodium diphenylamine sulfonate), poly(aniline-co-o-ethoxyaniline), poly(o-methylaniline), poly(o-methoxyaniline)를 중합하여 전기유변유체의 입자로 사용하였다.
