Garlic has been used for condiments and also for medicines to cure various diseases since ancient times. Many studies on the processing of garlic have been published, however, few of them were related with fermentation because of the antimicrobial action of the garlic. In this study, to conduct garlic fermentation, 4 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains with growth abilities in garlic medium were selected. Addition of various nitrogen, carbon, and mineral sources generally did not improve the growth of experimental strains during garlic fermentation except for Lactobacillus casei KFRI 704 by yeast extract and Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris ATCC 19257 by mineral sources. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis of 32 phenolic compounds during fermentation showed that formononetin was decreased time dependently. The concentrations of volatile compounds and alliin did not change during fermentation. The results of this study would provide the basic understanding of garlic fermentation by selected strains of LAB.
Bacillus polyfermenticus SCD was transformed by the recombinant shuttle vector for Bacillus and Escherichia coli containing 3 antibiotic resistant genes and an ${\alpha}$-amylase gene from Bifidobacterium adolescentis Int57. The ${\alpha}$-amylase gene fused to a secretion sequences was expressed under the control of the promoter of amylase gene from B. subtilis var. natto. The recombinant plasmid was maintained stably in the transformants producing the ${\alpha}$-amylase. The enzyme was secreted to outside of the cell and showed the similar enzyme activity as that of Bacillus subtilis BD170 under the same conditions of pH and growth temperature. Because of the relatively easy transformation and the secretion of the enzyme, the transformants of B. polyfermenticus SCD may give a new strategy in the production of foreign genes.
An optimal EEG and artifact classifier is proposed using neural network operating characteristics. The neural network operating characteristics are two dimensional parametric representations of the right and false identification probabilities of the network classifier. Since the EEG and EP signals acquired from multi -channel electrodes placed on the head surface are often interfered by other relatively large physiological signals such as electromyogram (EMG) or electroculogram (EOG), the removal of the artifact-affected EEGs is one of the key elements in neuro-functional mapping. Conventionally this task has been carried out by human experts spending lots of examination time. Using the neural-network based classification, human expert's efforts and time can be substantially reduced. From experiments, the neural-network based classification performs as good as human experts: variation of decisions between the neural network and human expert appears even smaller than that between human experts.
Ten strains of plasmid-harboring Bifidobacterium sp. were isolated from the feces of adults and children, and named as Bifidobacterium sp. GE1-GE8, ST, and SH5. These plasmids were categorized into three homologous groups (pKJ50-homologous, pKJ36-homologous, and non-homologous groups) according to Southern hybridization patterns using the formerly characterized bifidobacterial plasmids, pKJ50 and pKJ36, as probes. nine strains harboring the plasmids were shown to accumulate single-stranded DNA as a replication intermediate, based on the S1 nuclease treatment and Southern hybridization. These results suggest that the strains replicate by a rolling circle mechanism. Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) of the isolated bifidobacteria against several antibiotics were determined. Two strains, GE2 and GE3, showed relatively high MiC values against tetracycline ($793.6{\mu}g/ml$) and erythromycin ($153.6{\mu}g/ml$), respectively. The tetracycline resistance of GE2 disappeared when the resident plasmid of GE2 was cured by ethidium bromide. These results show that pKJ36-homologous and pKJ50-homologous plasmids are prevalent among various Bifidobacterium strains and some Bifidobacterium plasmids appear to code for antibiotic resistance.

Leuconostoc citreum CBUE isolated from kimchi proved to harbor a small cryptic plasmid, pNS75. The complete nucleotide sequence of pNS75 was 1,821 bp and had a low G+C content of 39.2%. Computer analysis using DNASIS revealed one open reading frame (ORF), having ATG as putatitive start condon and potentially encoding proteins with molecular mass of 38 kDa. The chimeric plasmid pLeuCM was first constructed wih pNS75, pUC19 and chroamphenicol acetyltransferase (CAT) from Staphylococcus sp.. pLeuCM replicated and expressed chroamphenicol acetyltransferase in Leuconostoc citerum CBNF after transformation. To test the availability of shuttle vector as cloning vehicle of foreign gene, $\alpha$-amylase gene of Streptococcus bovis was cloned and all transformants secreated the $\alpha$-amylase successfully. The result indicates that pLeuCM is a potential shuttle vector for Leuconostoc spp. and lactic acid bacteria.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to select the methodology for SMR HRA which has characteristics that are different from existing nuclear power plants and digital-based plants. Background: We must assure safety to preoccupy export of technology to developing countries or countries interested in nuclear application. And we can be an advanced country in nuclear technology by securing original technology in the field of SMR such as SMART. Method: THERP, which is the most representative HRA methodology among all, and RARA, which is the latest HRA methodology. This study compared and evaluated THERP and RARA. Results: As a result of applying THERP and RARA methodologies which are based on LOCA EOG task analysis result, this research concluded that RARA has higher personal errors than THERP. Conclusion: This study needs validation for LOCA, emergency operations, normal and abnormal scenarios since HRA methodology was only focused on LOCA scenario. Application: The results of this study can apply as base line data when designing MMIS, which is the main control room of SMART, and when building a simulator.
The study was to evaluate the air-conditioning of sleep algorithm. The algorithm was developed through the analysis of brain waves and MST, the experiments using air conditioner was performed in a apartment bedroom. Five female subjects were participated for the experiment. Eight hours of data collection a day was performed under different algorithm, case A, case B and case C. Physiological signals, EEG, ECG, EOG, and EMG, were obtained using polygraph and converted into digital signal. Then, subjects were asked to answer the questionnaire about their thermal sensation after experiment in bedroom. Sleep stages were classified, then TST, Sleep latency and Sleep efficiency were calculated for the three different air conditioner algorithm. As results, TST, Sleep efficiency, questionnaire showed the higher values for Case B algorism than that for other algorism. On the other hand, SWS latency was lower than for other conditions. Therefore, it was concluded that Case B of the algorithm was the best for comfortable and deep sleep.
Implanted telemetry systems provide the ability to monitor different species of animals while they move within their cages. Species monitored include mice, rats, rabbits, dogs, pigs, primates, sheep, horses, cattle, and others. A miniature transmitter implanted in each animal measures one or more parameters. Parameters measured include arterial pressure, intra-pleural pressure, left ventricular pressure, intra-ocular pressure, bladder pressure, ECG, EMG, EEG, EOG, temperature, activity, and other parameters and transmits the data via radio frequency signals to a nearby receiver. Every conventional dedicated transmitter contains one or more sensors, cpu and battery. Due to the expected life of the battery, the measuring time is limited. To overcome these problems, electromagnetic inductive coupling based wireless power transmission technology using multiple transmit coils were proposed, with each coil having a different active area driven by the coil driver. In this research, a parallel resonance based coil driver and serial resonance based coil driver are proposed. From the experiments we see that the parallel coil driver shows better performance under a low impedance and multiple coils configuration. However, the serial coil driver is more efficient for high impedance transmit coils.
