  • Plastic supply and recycling are increasingly becoming matters of social concern. In our country, Extended Producer Responsibility(EPR) system has been adopted in 2003 to expand recycle and reuse of waste resources at producer side, and due to expansion of the EPR system, amount of the mixed plastic waste generation has been drastically increased. Plastic-plastic separation is most fundamental technique to achieve effective plastic recycling. This paper reviews recent developments in plastic-plastic separation techniques and describe future tasks. The mechanisms of each separation which contain gravity separation, electrostatic separation, flotation, and separation of automotive shredder residue are described, and commercial scale and lab-scale results are introduced.

Accelerated Thermo-Mechanical Fatigue Life of Pb-Free Solder Joints for PZT Ceramic Resonator (PZT 세라믹 레조네이터 무연솔더 접합부의 열-기계적 피로 가속수명)

  • In this study, we optimized Pb-free Sn/Ni plating thickness and conditions were optimized to counteract the environmental regulations, such as RoHS and ELV(End-of Life Vehicles). The $B_{10}$ life verification method was also suggested to have been successful when used with the accelerated life test(ALT) for assessing Pb-free solder joint life of piezoelectric (PZT) ceramic resonator. In order to evaluate the solder joint life, a modified Norris-Landzberg equation and a Coffin-Manson equation were utilized. Test vehicles that were composed of 2520 PZT ceramic resonator on FR-4 PCB with Sn-3.0Ag-0.5Cu for ALT were manufactured as well. Thermal shock test was conducted with 1,500 cycles from $(-40{\pm}2)^{\circ}C$ to $(120{\pm}2)^{\circ}C$, and 30 minutes dwell time at each temperature, respectively. It was discovered that the thermal shock test is a very useful method in introducing the CTE mismatch caused by thermo-mechanical stress at the solder joints. The resonance frequency of test components was measured and observed the microsection views were also observed to confirm the crack generation of the solder joints.

Lead-free Solder for Automotive Electronics and Reliability Evaluation of Solder Joint (자동차 전장용 무연솔더 및 솔더 접합부의 신뢰성 평가)

  • Automotive today has been transforming to an electronic product by adopting a lot of convenience and safety features, suggesting that joining materials and their mechanical reliabilities are getting more important. In this study, a Sn-Cu-Cr-Ca solder composition having a high melting temperature ($>230^{\circ}C$) was fabricated and its joint properties and reliability was investigated with an aim to evaluate the suitability as a joining material for electronics of engine room. Furthermore, mechanical properties change under complex environment were compared with several existing solder compositions. As a result of contact angle measurement, favorable spreadability of 84% was shown and the average shear strength manufactured with corresponding composition solder paste was $1.9kg/mm^2$. Also, thermo-mechanical reliability by thermal shock and vibration test was compared with that of the representative high temperature solder materials such as Sn-3.5Ag, Sn-0.7Cu, and Sn-5.0Sb. In order to fabricate the test module, solder balls were made in joints with ENIG-finished BGA and then the BGA chip was reflowed on the OPS-finished PCB pattern. During the environmental tests, resistance change was continuously monitored and the joint strength was examined after tests. Sn-3.5Ag alloy exhibited the biggest degradation rate in resistance and shear stress and Sn-0.7Cu resulted in a relatively stable reliability against thermo-mechanical stress coming from thermal shock and vibration.

Evaluation of the Corrosion Resistance of Zn-Coated Steel as a Function of the Temperature of the Cr-free Solution Used to Coat the Steel (Cr-free 코팅액에 의한 아연도금강판의 열처리 온도에 따른 내식특성)

  • Zinc has a number of characteristics that make it well suited for use as a coating to protecting iron and steel products from corrosion. Its excellent corrosion resistance in most environments accounts for its successful use as a protective coating on a variety of products and in many exposure conditions. The excellent field performance of zinc coatings results from their ability to form dense, adherent films that corrode at a rate that ranges from 1% to 10% of the corrosion rate of ferrous materials, depending on the environment. Recently, EU RoHS and EU ELV prohibited the use of materials that adversely affect the environment, such as Pb, Hg, Cd, and $Cr^{+6}$. In this study, environmentally-friendly, Cr-free solutions (epoxy solution, acrylic solution, and urethane solution S-700) and organic/inorganic solution with Si; LRO-317) were used to evaluate the corrosion resistance of zinc-coated steel subjected to a saltwater spray for 72 hours. The coating of urethane solution (S-700) was best among the three kinds of solution with heat treatment during five minutes at $190^{\circ}F$. Test specimens with S-700 and LRO-317 coating were heat treated in a drying oven at 170, 180, 190, 200, and $210^{\circ}C$ for five minutes. The results show that the optimum corrosion resistance was $190^{\circ}C$ in EGI and $170^{\circ}C$ in HDGI, respectively.

임플란트용 $TiO_2$ 나노튜브의 전자빔 조사효과

  • 치과재료의 개발은 치과 치료 기술에 있어서 가장 중요한 요소이며, 현재 일반화되고 있는 치과 치료 기술 중 하나가 임플란트 시술이다. 임플란트의 기술 개발은 주로 임플란트 나사의 표면개질을 통한 기능개선에 초점을 ��추어 진행되어지고 있다. 본 연구에서는 Ti 임플란트 표면상에 양극산화법을 적용하여 다양한 지름 및 기공 크기를 갖는 $TiO_2$ 나노튜브를 제조하여 전자빔 조사를 통한 표면개질시 그 특성에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. 특히 전자빔 조사가 Ti/$TiO_2$ 나노튜브 표면상에 존재 가능한 조골세포의 성장 특성에 미치는 영향을 연구하였다. 양극산화법을 이용한 Ti/$TiO_2$ 나노튜브는 전해질로서 HF와 $NH_4F$를 사용하였으며, 20-80 V의 인가 전압하에서 내경 약 80 nm, 외경 약 124 nm 및 길이 약 280 nm-14 ${\mu}m$의 비교적 균질한 지름 및 분포를 갖는 Ti/$TiO_2$ 나노튜브를 제조하였다. 전자빔 조사는 EB-Tech (대전, 한국)의 electron-beam accelerator(Model ELV-4)를 이용하였으며, 1.0 MeV의 빔 에너지로 총 흡수선량이 50 kGy, 500 kGy 및 5,000 kGy로 조사하였다. 전자빔을 조사하기 전 후 Ti/$TiO_2$ 나노튜브 표면상에 조골세포주(Osteoblast cell)의 배양시간의 변화에 따른 효과를 연구한 결과 배양 전 후 전자빔 조사선량의 증가에 따라 조골세포의 흡착률이 증가함을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 HF전해질을 이용한 $TiO_2$ 나노튜브의 경우 5,000 kGy 조사선량의 전자빔을 조사한 후 조골세포 흡착률이 약 160% 증가하는 결과를 얻을 수 있었다. 전자빔 조사 전 후 조골세포 흡착률의 변화원인은 전자빔 조사 유무에 따른 $Ti^{3+}$$Ti^{4+}$의 변화에 기인함을 규명하였다. 이러한 결과는 향후 임플란트용 Ti/$TiO_2$ 나노튜브의 표면 개질시 전자빔의 유용성을 제시한다고 할 수 있다.

Influence of complex environment test on lead-free solder joint reliability (온도변화에 따른 진동의 무연솔더 접합부 신뢰성에 미치는 영향)

  • ELV(; End of Life Vehicles)를 비롯한 최근 환경 동향은 자동차 전장 모듈에 대하여 다양한 무연 솔더 적용을 요구하고 있다. 특히 자동차 엔진룸과 트랜스미션은 가동 중 고온 및 진동의 지속적인 영향을 받기 때문에 이와 유사한 환경에서의 신뢰성 연구가 필요한 시점이다. 이에 본 연구에서는 Sn3.5Ag, Sn0.7Cu, Sn5.0Sb 솔더 조성에 대하여 복합환경 조건하에서 접합부 신뢰성을 평가하였다. 복합환경을 구현하기 위하여 $-40{\sim}150^{\circ}C$ 범위의 온도 사이클과 랜덤 진동을 동시에 인가하였으며, 진동 가속도 3G, 진동주파수는 10~1000Hz 로 설정하여 자동차 환경을 충족하였다. 복합시험의 1 cycle 은 20 시간이며, 총 120 시간의 시험 동안 진동의 영향 및 진동과 고온이 동시에 작용하였을 경우의 영향에 대해 비교하였다. 테스트 모듈 제작을 위해 450 um 의 솔더볼이 적용되었으며, 각 조성의 솔더볼을 이용하여 BGA test chip 제작하였고, 제작된 BGA test chip 은 다시 daisy chain PCB 위에 실장 및 리플로우 공정을 통해 접합되었다. 테스트 동안 In-situ 로 저항의 변화를 관찰하여 파단의 유무를 판단하였고 전자주사현미경을 통해 파괴 기전을 평가하였다. 복합시험 시간에 따른 전단강도를 측정하였으며, 각 조성에 대하여 상이한 전단강도 변화를 관찰하였다. 계면 IMC 형상은 전단강도 변화에 영향을 주었으며, 특히 높은 온도가 IMC 성장을 촉진시켜 전단강도 감소에 영향을 주었다. 본 복합환경 시험 조건에서는 Sn0.7Cu 가 가장 안정적이었으며, 파단면을 관찰한 결과 연성파괴 모드가 관찰되었다.

Joint Property of Sn-Cu-Cr(Ca) Middle Temperature Solder for Automotive Electronic Module (자동차 전장모듈용 Sn-Cu-Cr(Ca) 중온 솔더의 접합특성 연구)

  • Joint properties of vehicle ECU (Electric Control Unit) module which was manufactured by using Sn-Cu-Cr-Ca alloy were investigated. A new solder which has a middle melting temperature about $231^{\circ}C$ was fabricated as the type of 300um solder ball and paste type. The prototype modules were made by reflow process and measured spreadability, wettability shear strength and estimated interface reaction. The spreadability of the alloy was about 84% from the measurement of contact angle of the solder ball and the wetting force was measured 2mN. The average shear strength of the module which was manufactured by using the solder paste, was 1.9 $kg/mm^2$. Also, the thickness of IMC(intermetallic compound) was evaluated with various aging temperature and time in order to understand Cr effect on Sn-0.7Cu solder. $Cu_6Sn_5$ IMC was formed between Cu pad and the solder alloy and the average thickness of the $Cu_6Sn_5$ IMC was measured about 4um and it was about 50% of thickness of $Cu_6Sn_5$ IMC in Sn-0.7Cu. It is expected to have a positive effect on reliability of the solder joint.

Recycling of Copper & Nickel in ASR to satisfy the EU ELV Directive (유럽연합 환경기준 충족을 위한 자동차폐기물 내의 구리와 니켈 재활용에 대한 연구)

  • About 40 million automotive vehicles all over the world and 0.55 million in Korea were retired from use annually. Every nation is desperate to decrease environmental pollution by ELVs(End of Life Vehicles) and try to tighten the regulations. Europe passed laws requiring OEMs to increase vehicles' recovery and reuse rate to 95% by 2015 from current 84%. The ferrous parts, 75% of total automobile weight, are almost recycled whereas the remaining 25% of the non-metal -predominantly plastics as well as form, glass and rubber- and the non-ferrous materials -copper, nickel and aluminium- end up in landfills. The recycling status of non-ferrous materials represented by copper and nickel is reviewed and how much the recycling rate will be improved is calculated.

Optimization of Color Sorting Process of Shredded ELV Bumper using Reaction Surface Method (반응표면법을 이용한 폐자동차 범퍼 파쇄물의 색채선별공정 최적화 연구)

  • An color sorting technique was introduced to recycle End-of-life automobile shredded bumpers. The color sorting is a innovate method of separating the differences in the color of materials which are difficult to separate in gravity and size classification by using a camera and an image process technique. Experiments were planned and optimal conditions were derived by applying BBD (Box-Behnken Design) in the reaction surface method. The effects of color sensitivity, feed rate and sample size were analyzed, and a second-order reaction model was obtained based on the analysis of regression and statistical methods and $R^2$ and p-value were 99.56% and < 0.001. Optimum recovery was 94.1% under the conditions of color sensitivity, feed rate and particle size of 32%, 200 kg/h, and 33 mm respectively. The recovery of actual experiment was 93.8%. The experimental data agreed well with the predicted value and confirmed that the model was appropriate.

Development of Certified Reference Materials for Analysis of Heavy Metals in Paints to Cope with Environmental Regulations (환경규제 대응을 위한 페인트 중의 중금속 분석용 인증 표준물질 개발)

  • In the areas of RoHS, WEEE, ELV and REACH, reinforcement of environmental regulations against harmful substances is a global trend not only in EC but also in all over the world. In the fields of Korea's major export products such as material parts, electrical and electronic products and automobile parts, we are responding to these regulations consistently. To develop reference material for analyzing lead and cadmium in paints, the candidate materials were produced through the screening process which separated shapes and sizes. To secure the traceability of the candidate materials produced, the characteristics and uncertainties are estimated by ICP-AES analysis using the primary reference material. The short-term and long-term stabilities also are evaluated in parallel. In order to calculate the final certification value of the candidate material, the verification were carried out by the performance evaluation through the comparison among the KOLAS (Korea Laboratory Accreditation Scheme) laboratories, and the CRM was produced in accordance with ISO Guide 35. The certified values and uncertainties of Pb and Cd of the final paint standard, determined according to the joint analysis among laboratories, are Pb [($191.4{\pm}3.1$) mg/kg, ($944.1{\pm}5.6$) mg/kg] and Cd [($45.0{\pm}2.6$) mg/kg, ($225.5{\pm}3.5$) mg/kg]. These standard materials were developed to enhance the reliability of measurement analysis, including the validity and traceability of measurement results. Also it is expected that the CRM will be used as QCM (quality control material) for the product design and the process monitoring, so that regulation and management of hazardous heavy metals can be systematically implemented.
