Polymeric thin-film assemblies whose bulk electrical conductivity and mechanical performance have been enhanced by single-walled carbon nanotubes are proposed for measuring strain and corrosion activity in metallic structural systems. Similar to the dermatological system found in animals, the proposed self-sensing thin-film assembly supports spatial strain and pH sensing via localized changes in electrical conductivity. Specifically, electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is used to create detailed mappings of film conductivity over its complete surface area using electrical measurements taken at the film boundary. While EIT is a powerful means of mapping the sensing skin's spatial response, it requires a data acquisition system capable of taking electrical impedance measurements on a large number of electrodes. A low-cost wireless impedance analyzer is proposed to fully automate EIT data acquisition. The key attribute of the device is a flexible sinusoidal waveform generator capable of generating regulated current signals with frequencies from near-DC to 20 MHz. Furthermore, a multiplexed sensing interface offers 32 addressable channels from which voltage measurements can be made. A wireless interface is included to eliminate the cumbersome wiring often required for data acquisition in a structure. The functionality of the wireless impedance analyzer is illustrated on an experimental setup with the system used for automated acquisition of electrical impedance measurements taken on the boundary of a bio-inspired sensing skin recently proposed for structural health monitoring.
In electrical impedance tomography(EIT), various image reconstruction algorithms have been used in order to compute the internal resistivity distribution of the unknown object with its electric potential data at the boundary. Mathematically the EIT image reconstruction algorithm is a nonlinear ill-posed inverse problem. This paper presents a new combined method based on genetic algorithm(GA) and modified Newton-Raphson(mNR) algorithm via two-step approach for the solution of the static EIT inverse problem. In the first step, each mesh is classified into three mesh groups: target, background, and temporary groups. The mNR algorithm can be used to determine the region of group. In the second step, the values of these resistivities are determined using genetic algorithm. Computer simulations with the 32 channels synthetic data show that the spatial resolution of reconstructed images by the proposed scheme is improved compared to that of the mNR algorithm at the expense of increased computational burden.
We have developed an efficient and robust image reconstruction algorithm for static impedance imaging. This improved Newton-Raphson method produced more accurate images by reducing the undesirable effects of the ill-conditioned Hessian matrix. We found that our electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system could produce two-dimensional static images from a physical phantom with 7% spatial resolution at the center and 5% at the periphery. Static EIT image reconstruction requires a large amount of computation. In order to overcome the limitations on reducing the computation time by algorithmic approaches, we implemented the improved Newton-Raphson algorithm on a parallel computer system and showed that the parallel computation could reduce the computation time from hours to minutes.

Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a potential supplement for mammogram screening. This study aimed to evaluate and feasibility of EIT as opposed to mammography and to determine pain perception with both imaging methods. Women undergoing screening mammography at the Radiology Department of National University of Malaysia Medical Centre were randomly selected for EIT imaging. All women were requested to give a pain score after each imaging session. Two independent raters were chosen to define the image findings of EIT. A total of 164 women in the age range from 40 to 65-year-old participated and were divided into two groups; normal and abnormal. EIT sensitivity and specificity for rater 1 were 69.4% and 63.3, whereas for rater 2 they were 55.3% and 57.0% respectively. The reliability for each rater ranged between good to very good (p<0.05). Quantitative values of EIT showed there were significant differences in all values between groups (ANCOVA, p<0.05). Interestingly, EIT scored a median pain score of $1.51{\pm}0.75$ whereas mammography scored $4.15{\pm}0.87$ (Mann Whitney U test, p<0.05). From these quantitative values, EIT has the potential as a health discriminating index. Its ability to replace image findings from mammography needs further investigation.
In most boundary estimation algorithms estimation in EIT (Electrical Impedance Tomography), anomaly boundaries can be expressed with Fourier series and the unknown coefficients are estimated with proper inverse algorithms. Furthermore, the number of anomalies is assumed to be available a priori. The prior knowledge on the number of anomalies may be unavailable in some cases, and we need to determine the number of anomalies with other methods. This paper presents an algorithm for the boundary estimation in EIT (Electrical Impedance Tomography) using the prior information from the conventional Newton-Raphson method. Although Newton-Raphson method generates so poor spatial resolution that the anomaly boundaries are hardly reconstructed, even after a few iterations it can give general feature of the object to be imaged such as the number of anomalies, their sizes and locations, as long as the anomalies are big enough. Some numerical experiments indicate that the Newton-Raphson method can be used as a good predictor of the unknown boundaries and the proposed boundary discrimination algorithm has a good performance.
Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has been applied to measure the location of external disturbance using a phantom and conductive yarns. According to the test results, the addition of carbon nanotube particles into the phantom does not show remarkable improvement in location errors. On the other hand combined fabric, conductive yarns with fabric, and non-woven fabric, were added to evaluate its performance as a fabric sensor. The combined fabric resulted in a decrease of 21.5% in the circumferential location error and a decrease of 50% in the radial location error, compared to those of the yarns. Additionally, it was revealed that the measurement error is almost linearly proportional to the conductivity of the phantom liquid and resistance of the conductive yarns. The combined fabric can be a promising material for fabric sensors in sports utilities and medical devices.
We describe the development of a prototype multi-channel electrical impedance tomography (EIT) system. The EIT system can be equipped with either a single-ended current source or a balanced current source. Each current source can inject current between any chosen pair of electrodes. In order to reduce the data acquisition time, we implemented multiple digital voltmeters simultaneously acquiring and demodulating voltage signals. Each voltmeter measures a differential voltage between a fixed pair of adjacent electrodes. All voltmeters are configured in a radially symmetric architecture to optimize the routing of wires and minimize cross-talks. To maximize the signal-to-noise ratio, we implemented techniques such as digital waveform generation, Howland current pump circuit with a generalized impedance converter, digital phase-sensitive demodulation, tri-axial cables with both grounded and driven shields, and others. The performance of the EIT system was evaluated in terms of common-mode rejection ratio, signal-to-noise ratio, and reciprocity error. Future design of a more innovative EIT system including battery operation, miniaturization, and wireless techniques is suggested.
Two impedance imaging systems of multi-frequency electrical impedance tomography (MFEIT) and magnetic resonance electrical impedance tomography (MREIT) are described. MFEIT utilizes boundary measurements of current-voltage data at multiple frequencies to reconstruct cross-sectional images of a complex conductivity distribution (${\sigma}+i{\omega}{\varepsilon}$) inside the human body. The inverse problem in MFEIT is ill-posed due to the nonlinearity and low sensitivity between the boundary measurement and the complex conductivity. In MFEIT, we therefore focus on time- and frequency-difference imaging with a low spatial resolution and high temporal resolution. Multi-frequency time- and frequency-difference images in the frequency range of 10 Hz to 500 kHz are presented. In MREIT, we use an MRI scanner to measure an internal distribution of induced magnetic flux density subject to an injection current. This internal information enables us to reconstruct cross-sectional images of an internal conductivity distribution with a high spatial resolution. Conductivity image of a postmortem canine brain is presented and it shows a clear contrast between gray and white matters. Clinical applications for imaging the brain, breast, thorax, abdomen, and others are briefly discussed.
In electrical impedance tomography (EIT) an array of electrodes is attached on the boundary of an object and small alternating currents are injected through these electrodes, and then the resulting voltages are measured. An estimation for the cross-sectional resistivity distribution in the object is obtained by using these current and voltage data in a nondestructive manner. In this paper, the electrical impedance imaging of two-phase flows undergoing rapid transient is considered with a special emphasis on the effect of the current pattern on the image reconstruction. The trigonometric current pattern, which is commonly used in the conventional static electrical impedance imaging, shows poor performance in case of the dynamic imaging considered in this work. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted with various kinds of current patterns and their effects on the image reconstruction performance are examined.
Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has been suffered from the severe ill-posedness which is caused by the inherent low sensitivity of boundary measurements to any changes of internal resistivity values. So, small noise occur unexpected reconstruction image. Generally in EIT system, if measured voltage includes noise, we can't find object location and resistivity values. In this paper, we propose digital filter for measured voltage in EIT. Newton-Raphson is the most..popular algorithm in EIT, but noise cause to blur image. We use Fourier transform (FT) in order to minimize the noise and design the filter. After filtering, result of reconstruction image is improved better than before filtering.
