Blog Citations as Indicators of the Societal Impact of Research: Content Analysis of Social Sciences Blogs

  • This article analyzes motivations behind social sciences blog posts citing journal articles in order to find out whether blog citations are good indicators for the societal impact or benefits of research. A random sample of 300 social sciences blog posts (out of 1,233 blog posts) from ResearchBlogging.org published between 01/01/2012 to 18/06/2014 were subjected to content analysis. The 300 blog posts had 472 references including 424 journal articles from 269 different journals. Sixty-one (22.68%) of all cited journals were from the social sciences and most of the journals with high frequency were highly cited general science journals such as PNAS and Science. Seventy-five percent of all journals were referenced only once. The average age of articles cited at the time of citation was 5.8 years. Discussion and criticism were the two main categories of motivations. Overall, the study shows the potential of blog citations as an altmetric measure and as a proxy for assessing the research impact. A considerable number of citation motivations in blogs such as disputing a belief, suggesting policies, providing a solution to a problem, reacting to media, criticism and the like seemed to support gaining societal benefits. Societal benefits are considered as helping stimulate new approaches to social issues, or informing public debate and policymaking. Lower self-citation (compared to some other altmetric measures such as tweets) and the fact that blogging involves generating content (i.e. an intellectual process) give them an advantage for altmetrics. However, limitations and contextual issues such as disciplinary differences and low uptake of altmetrics, in general, in scholarly communication should not be ignored when using blogs as a data source for altmetrics.

THE POSSIBILITIES AND DIFFICULTIES ON R&E ACTIVITY FOR IMPROVING THE PROFESSION SKILLS OF SCIENCE GIFTED TEACHER

  • Although over - 600 students in Incheon has been participated in the gifted education programs under the colleges and Office of Education Department every year, it is reported that the number of teachers have insufficient teaching abilities in primary, advanced, and after-advanced gifted classes. The Gifted Education Research Institute in Incheon University introduced R&E activities for the improvement of teachers' abilities in science research and student guiding. Professors in science department conducted the R & E activities to select the research thesis. The professors and the guidance teachers decided the directions of the research, and the guidance teachers who learned from the professors taught 3-5 students to practice the research. Five professor-teacher-student research teams in math, physics, chemistry and biology conducted the research after school and during the vacation for 7 months. The results of the research were submitted to the journals of research activities and the result papers were presented to the seminar. On this research, the possibilities and the difficulties of the R&E activities based of the journals of research activities, oral presentation and the research results reports were analyzed with a purpose of improving the professionalism of the science gifted teachers. Although the professors proposed many difficulties or problems about the R&E activities, the teachers reported that the R & E activities he1ped them to improve their research activities and student guiding techniques. The teachers acquired more knowledge on the principles of the science related areas than before. Moreover, they thought it was very meaningful experience in using the science related instruments, guiding the students' research and writing the research reports. The students also gave the positive responses with the increased interests in new science studies and with the experience of learning the way of research.

KSCD를 활용한 국내 과학기술자의 해외 학술지 인용행태 연구 (Citing Behavior of Korean Scientists on Foreign Journals in KSCD)

  • 국내 과학기술전반에 걸쳐 주제분야별로 해외 학술지 인용비율 즉 해외 학술지 영향력에 대한 종합적인 분석은 부족한 실정이며 가장 큰 원인은 종합 분석이 가능한 국내 학술지에 대한 대규모 인용색인 데이터베이스의 부재였다. KISTI는 한국 과학기술 인용색인 데이터베이스인 KSCD를 구축하고 한국과학기술인용색인서비스(KSCI)를 제공하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 국내 과학기술분야 핵심 학술지를 포괄하는 KSCD를 활용하여 국내 과학기술분야 연구자들의 해외 학술지 인용행태에 대한 분석 연구를 수행하였다. 연구 범위는 첫째, 해외 인용문헌의 형태별 분석을 둘째, 해외 학술지 인용문헌의 주제별 피인용수 및 타분야 인용비율 분석을, 셋째, 해외 학술지 인용문헌의 언어 및 발행국가 분석을, 넷째, 해외 학술지 발행기관 및 글로벌 인용색인 서비스 등재현황 분석을 마지막으로 국내의 해외 전자저널 구독 현황 분석이다. 해외학술지 인용분석을 통한 연구의 주요성과로는 해외 인용 학술지의 인용절정기(평균 3.9년), 반감기(평균 9년)의 규명과 한국 연구자들이 주로 해외등재학술지를 인용하며 국내에서 인용 해외등재학술지의 90%정도가 전자저널로 구독되고 있음을 밝힌 점이다. 본 연구를 통한 국내 과학자들의 해외 학술지 인용행태 분석 결과는 해외 전자저널 구독 전략 수립에 도움이 될 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

블렌디드 러닝(blended learning)을 적용한 기본간호학 실습교육에서 성찰일지의 작성이 간호학생의 메타인지와 문제해결능력에 미치는 효과 (Effects of Writing Reflective Journal on Meta-cognition and Problem Solving Ability in Nursing Students taking a Fundamental Nursing Skills Course Applying Blended Learning)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to contribute to the development of an efficient teaching-learning method by analyzing effects of writing reflective journals on meta-cognition and problem solving ability in nursing students in education applying blended learning for fundamental nursing skills. Methods: The research design was a one-group pretest-posttest design, done to assess changes in meta-cognition and problem solving ability. Participants were 63 nursing students taking the fundamental nursing skills course at one college in Gyeonggi Province. The course was offered from March 21 to June 3, 2016. Data were collected using pre and post tests given before and after writing of reflective journals in blended learning. Data were analyzed using t-test, ANOVA, $Scheff{\acute{e}}^{\prime}s$ test and paired t-test with SPSS Statistics version 20.0. Results: The results of this study show that scores for meta-cognition and problem solving ability of these students were all above average. There was a statistically significant difference in meta-cognition between pre and post writing of reflective journals but not for problem-solving ability. Conclusion: The findings indicate that writing a reflective journal in blended learning is an efficient teaching-learning method to improve meta-cognition in nursing students.

Research Publishing by Library and Information Science Scholars in Pakistan: A Bibliometric Analysis

  • Scholarly communication plays a significant role in the development and dissemination of research outputs in library and information science (LIS). This study presents findings from a survey which examines the key attributes that characterize the publishing by Pakistani LIS scholars, i.e. academics and professionals, in national journals. A pilot-tested, electronic questionnaire was used to collect the data from the target population. 104 respondents (or 69.3% of target) provided feedback on areas such as number of articles published, number of citations, and the nature of any collaboration with other authors. The findings of this survey revealed that, among the various designated regions of Pakistan, the Punjab region was the most highly represented. In articles published in national journals, there was a clear preference among all respondents to collaborate with at least one other author. The citation metrics for LIS articles in national journals were relatively low (30.22%), which aligns with Scimago’s Journal and Country Rankings. The uptake of social scholarly networks mirrors international trends. Respondents were asked to score factors which could impact negatively on their ability to undertake research and/or publish the results. The study recommends that concerned stakeholders work together, as appropriate, to address concerns. In addition, it recommends that further research be undertaken to define patterns of Pakistani co-authorship in the social sciences.

국내 연구자들의 SCI 학술지 발표 현황 분석 (A Research on Analyses of the Written SCI Journal Articles by Korean Researchers)

  • 최근 몇 년간 국가적으로 R&D 분야에 대한 예산 지원이 활발해지면서 국내 연구자들이 과학기술분야의 주요 학술지에 발표하는 논문의 양도 급격히 증가하고 있다. 하지만 이 연구자들이 발표한 논문을 수록하고 있는 학술지가 국내에서 얼마나 활용되고 있는지에 대한 연구는 이루어지지 않고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 국내에서 연구를 수행하는 연구자들이 발표한 논문이 수록된 주요 학술지에 대한 분석을 통해 한국 연구자들이 주로 발표하는 학술지가 무엇인지를 알아보는데 그 목적이 있다. 이를 위하여 Thomson Reuters 사의 SCI(Science Citation Index) 데이터베이스에 수록된 학술지를 그 분석 대상으로 하였으며, 분석 기간은 2004년부터 2006년도까지 3년간의 데이터를 추출하여 분석하였다.

$T_EX$과 타이포그래피에 관한 소고 (Short Introduction to $T_EX$ and Typography)

  • [ $T_EX$ ] is a typesetting system created by Donald E. Knuth for producing publication-quality scientific books and journals. It is famous for the line breaking algorithm, the formatting of complex mathematical formula, and the powerful macro programming capability. Recently $T_EX$ plays a new role of an automatic typesetting engine. The paper describes $T_EX$ in the framework of typography by comparing with DTP softwares and word processors.

한국 식품 관련 학회지(1984 - 1993)에 게재된 '식품성분 분석' 연구논문에 대한 내용 연구 (Study of Food Analysis Research Papers in Food Science related Korean Journals by Content Analysis)

  • The rapid development of science and technology has brought about a quantitative expansion and a decrease of practical life span of information. Food science, a kind of life science and practical science, can not be an exception. Analysis of food components is the fundamental basis of the Food Science. So I would like this to be of some help to the following researches through the quantitative and qualitative analysis of the contents of the food analysis research papers in food science related Korean journals. Five hundred seventy four research papers published from 1984 to 1993 in the three journals, that is, Korean Journal of Food Science & Technology. The Korean Journal of Nutrition, The Korean Journal of Home Economics, which is three major journals read by people in Home Economics area are analyzed in this study. The method applied in this study is content analysis. Followings are the results of the content analysis : 1) When categorize the material foods into food groups, cereal group is analyzed most often(15.8%), followed by fish and shellfish group(12.4%), oil and fat group(11.8%). The least often analyzed food group is egg group. Among the food soybean is most often analyzed(6.0%), followed by polished rice(3.7%), glutinous rice(2.2%), cabbage(2.1%) and human milk(1.8%). 2) About the analyzed food components, the general components such as moisture, crude protein, crude fat, carbohydrate and ash has been analyzed very often but the trace nutrients such as vitamins and minerals has scarcely been analyzed. 3) The method used in the food components analysis is usually AOAC(Association of Official Analytical Chemist, USA). HPLC was applied to the analysis of many food components like amino acids, fatty acids, vitamin A, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin C and vitamin E.

수학 교사 공동체 관련 국내·외 연구 동향 (Research Trends in Mathematics Teacher Learning Community : Literature Review)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 수학 교사 공동체에 대한 국내·외 연구의 최근 동향을 파악하고 그 중 특히 공동체 활동에서 구성원들의 협력의 특징을 분석함으로써 교사 공동체 연구와 실제에 시사점을 제공하는 것이다. 이를 위해 2003년부터 2019년 7월까지 국내 KCI 등재 논문 14편, 국외 SSCI 등재 논문 24편을 대상으로 연구 방법, 연구 주제, 그리고 교사 공동체에서 협력 의지, 방향, 양상을 분석하였다. 그 결과 국내·외 연구들은 통상 질적연구 방법을 활용하였다는 공통점이 있었으나 연구에서 주목한 주제와 공동체 협력의 특징에는 다소 차이가 있었다. 연구 주제 측면에서 국내 논문은 공동체 운영과 발달 및 프로그램 개발에 관한 연구가 많았으며 국외 논문은 공동체 활동과 교수 발달, 특히 교수 관행에 집중한 연구가 많았다. 또한 구성원들의 협력 양상에서 국내 논문은 지식의 제공과 교수 경험의 공유를 강조하였고, 국외 논문은 경험적 사례와 아이디어를 공유하는 것뿐 아니라 이를 반성하는 과정을 강조하였다는 차이가 나타났다. 한편 국내·외 논문에서 교사들이 주체적으로 공동체 활동 내용과 규범을 협의하는 활동에 주목하였다는 특징이 나타났다. 이러한 연구 결과를 바탕으로 교사 공동체 연구의 방법, 공동체에서 협력 방식, 그리고 교사교육 정책에 관한 시사점을 제시하였다.
