The Moderating Effect of Visual Cues in eWOM on the Relationship between Perceived Risk and Purchase Intention (위험지각과 소비자의 구매의도의 관계에 대한 온라인 구전정보의 시각적 단서의 조절효과)

  • The current study examined the moderating effect of visual cues in eWOM on the relationship between perceived risk and purchase intention. Specifically, the study tested the different directions of the moderating effect in positive and negative eWOM. Two studies from a 2 (perceived risk: high vs. low) by 2 (visual cue: presence vs. absence) experimental design were used with online subjects. Findings from study 1 (n=123) supported that visual cues in positive eWOM help to reduce the negative effect of perceived risk on purchase intention. However, study 2 (n=122) showed that visual cues in negative eWOM intensify the negative effect of perceived risk on purchase intention. The findings demonstrated that visual cues in eWOM influence consumers' decision under high risk conditions. We discussed findings of this study how visual cues in positive and negative eWOM can be strategically managed for new online sellers.

The Impact of Senders' Identity to the Acceptance of Electronic Word-of-Mouth of Consumers in Vietnam

  • Studies related to Electronic Word-of-Mouth (eWOM) show that the acceptance of eWOM information is an important factor in customer purchase decisions. When consumers accept eWOM information, they tend to use that information in considering before making purchase decisions. In Viet Nam, there are few studies about eWOM information, especially on the acceptance of eWOM information. Research is conducted to test the influence of consumers on the perception of the senders' identity to the acceptance of online reviews (a kind of eWOM) in Viet Nam - a case study in Ho Chi Minh City. Using adjustment techniques, inspecting the scales and a theoretical model represent the relationship among the influential factors. The research is based on a sample of 522 consumers who use the Internet to search for product reviews before buying and used Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to test the relationships among the variables. The research results show that the scales of the variables: Message Quality, Source Credibility, Perceived Message Usefulness, Perceived Senders' Identity, Perceived Message Credibility, Message Acceptance attain the validity and reliability in the research. The research contributes to the understanding of the determinants that influence the acceptance of eWOM information, which are informational factors, and factors related to consumer skepticism.

The Mediating Role of Social Media in Tourism: An eWOM Approach

  • This research article investigates the way eWOM in social media influences the formation of destination image through development of trust and satisfaction for the potential tourist. The research involved administering an 18-point questionnaire taking online reviews, tourist involvement, and eWOM, destination image components of trust and satisfaction as variables. Data was collected from 554 individuals forming a cross-section of social media users and analyzed using multi-variate techniques (Reliability, CFA, and SEM). Results indicate a positive and significant relationship between all except online review and destination trust and satisfaction. Indirect and direct effects indicate that eWOM fully mediates the relationship between destination satisfaction and involvement and partially mediates the relationship between destination trust and involvement. In the case of online reviews, eWOM acts as a full mediator between destination trust and destination satisfaction for the future traveler using social media. The study proposes that components of image vary depending upon the degree of involvement, volume online reviews and eWOM generated also termed as 'virality' and these in turn influence the intention to revisit or recommend a destination. The study highlights its utility for National Tourist Organizations (NTOs) and online travel intermediaries to enhance destination marketing efforts.

Analyzing the Effect of Electronic Word of Mouth on Low Involvement Products

  • As social media are increasingly being used as a marketing platform, electronic word-of-mouth (eWOM) has also become popular in both research and business areas. However, although many studies have examined the effect of eWOM, the products investigated in most of these studies, such as films or books, are not likely to be consumed daily. Therefore, in this study, we analyze the effect of eWOM on low involvement products, which are inexpensive and enough for everyday spending. Given that low involvement products have unique characteristics such as low price, we conduct an experiment using a real sales dataset related to soft drinks. We also analyze the effect of eWOM in two social media platforms. We find that eWOM influences the sales of low involvement products, but such influence is dependent on the characteristic of the social media platform. Based on these results, we suggest that marketers and retailers selling low involvement products must consider eWOM, such as reviews, and differentiate their strategies based on their focused social media platform.

Content Analysis on the Component of Two-sided eWOM (온라인 양면구전의 구성요인에 관한 내용분석)

  • This study analyzed online word-of-mouth information using content analysis to help practical categorization of two-sided eWOM. A total of 402 online consumer reviews on search goods and experience goods were collected. Descriptive characteristics(information direction, length of review line) and content structural characteristics(product benefit types, information presentation methods) were used as analysis criteria. The study results are as follows. First, the types of two-sided e-WOM direction were made of positive/negative, negative/positive, positive/negative/ positive, and negative/positive/negative. Second, the length of two-sided eWOM was longer than the length of one-sided eWOM and blended type accounted for the highest proportion both one-sided and two-sided eWOM at the aspect of product benefit. Third, holistic presentation method was overwhelmingly high in one-sided eWOM, whereas blended and analytic presentation methods were somewhat high in two-sided eWOM. Fourth, holistic presentation method was high in search goods, whereas blended and analytic presentation methods were high in experience goods. Based on these results, implications for two-sided e-WOM study and further research issues were discussed.

The Effect of Online WOM of Menu Product Consumers on Product Perception Risk and WOM Effect

  • Purpose: This study examined marketing value as online word-of-mouth media in the foodservice industry, and it did research on online word-of-mouth (e-WOM) communication marketing schemes using mass communication in the industry. The study is also intended to investigate the impact of electronic word-of-mouth (e-WOM) information and communication on product awareness risks, benefits, and word-of-mouth (WOM) impacts on restaurant consumers. Research design, data, and methodology: The analysis was conducted on a valid questionnaire of 425 menu product consumers. The survey was conducted for two months in March 2019. The collected data was analyzed using SPSS and hierarchical regression analysis was applied. Results: It did empirical research on the reciprocal casual relations to online and the existing word-of-mouth communication that have to be preceded to understand characteristics of online word-of-mouth communication for the purpose of this study. The result is summarized as follows. First, the online word-of-mouth (e-WOM) effect on product recognition risk shows the statistically significant effect of information sender characteristics, information recipient characteristics, and online word-of-mouth (e-WOM) communication on product recognition risk. Second, the influence of online word-of-mouth (e-WOM) on product risk benefits shows that the information sender characteristics, the information receiver characteristics, and online communications have a statistically significant effect on product risk benefits. Third, online word of mouth risk recognition had a statistically significant effect on word of mouth acceptance. Fourth, online risk benefit had a statistically significant positive effect on word of mouth (WOM) effect. Conclusions: The communication between online word of mouth (e-WOM) sender and recipient had a positive influence on the product evaluation and attitude change in the foodservice industry, and the word-of-mouth (WOM) effect affected financial and non-financial performance. The results mentioned above indicated that the communication between the sender of the information and the receiver of the information had a positive effect on the product evaluation and attitude change of the menu consumer, and the word-of-mouth (WOM) result affected the financial. Therefore, the online word-of-mouth (e-WOM) effect has a positive effect on the word-of-mouth (WOM) effect of menu products when performed simultaneously and positively between the information sender and the information receiver.

A Study on Antecedents of WOM in the Context of Internet E-Commerce (인터넷 전자상거래 환경에서의 구전효과의 선행 요인에 관한 연구)

  • E-commerce market has been increasing rapidly, which reflects the convenience and economic benefits associated with its usage. Unlike the traditional markets, WOM (Word-of-Mouth) becomes more important because e-commerce consumers can't experience the real product in the purchase decision-making process. In this regard, identifying the influencing factors to WOM of internet e-commerce site is very important. In this paper, we aim to examine the effects of perceived and individual variables on WOM in the context of internet e-commerce site. In order to analyze the antecedents, we selected perceived and individual factors such as regret tendency scale, prior knowledge and merchandise attractiveness. In addition, we examined the role of gender as dummy and moderating variable. For empirical analysis, we surveyed real users of internet e-commerce site. As a result, all antecedents showed significant influence on WOM except regret tendency scale. Among the variables, the merchandise attractiveness has top standardized coefficient. Gender plays a role as moderating variable when only interacting with regret tendency scale. The results of this research can be useful guidelines for internet e-commerce providers.

  • Today, the development of internet brings many changes in formation exploration and acceptance. Not only the customers can come into contact much information about the firm and its product by quick and easy search, but also they produce information by themselves or can spread the information via the internet. Nowadays, customers are progressive information explorer and producer on online. In this sense, this study examined the effects of e-word-of-mouth information characteristics on the consumer's perceived usefulness and perceived acceptance of e-word-of-mouth information in the food service industry in order to suggest directions to enhances marketing strategies for marketer. The research model for this study was designed based on the hypothesis that the characteristics of e-word-of-mouth information and credibility of the information influenced both the user's perceived usefulness and acceptance. Based on total 277 customers obtained from the empirical research, this study reviewed validity, reliability and fitness of research model. The analysis results on these factors are as follow. First, the characteristics of e-word-of-mouth information; vividness, consensus, direction had an influence on the customer's perceived usefulness. Second, the characteristics of e-word-of-mouth information; vividness, consensus, direction had an influence on the customer's perceived acceptance. Third, the reliability of information had an influence on the customer's perceived usefulness and the credibility of e-word-of-mouth information perceived acceptance. Fourth, the customer's perceived usefulness had an influence on the customer's perceived acceptance.

Antecedents and Consequences of Smartphone Advertising Engagement (스마트폰환경에서의 광고 인게이지먼트 선행요인과 결과요인에 관한 연구)

  • As the number of Smartphone users increases, mobile advertising market has been expanding rapidly. In line with this, the ways to evaluate mobile advertising effectiveness are diversified, and engagement is one of the crucial qualitative and multi-dimensional evaluation methods of mobile advertising. Thus, the purpose of this study is to identify key antecedents and consequences of mobile advertising engagement, and examines the structural relationships among those research variables. Informativeness and personalization were selected as antecedents of engagement, trust and e-WOM intention were selected as consequences of engagement based on the review of previous studies. Data collected from survey was used to assess research hypotheses. Results show that informativeness and personalization have significant and positive effects on engagement, and engagement influences on trust and e-WOM intention. In addition, trust is proven to be positively related to e-WOM intention.

eWOM효과에 영향을 미치는 요인에 관한 비교문화적 실증연구 -한국과 미국을 중심으로-

  • 본 연구는 eWOM(온라인 구전) 효과에 영향을 미치는 요인을 문화권(국가), 소비자특성(소비자 수용성), 그리고 온라인 경험 (인터넷 사용기간, 이용시간, 온라인 쇼핑횟수)로 나누어 살펴보았다. 문헌연구들을 통해 연구문제를 도출하고 이를 비교 문화적으로 실증하기 위해 총 1,176(한국 615명, 미국 561명)명의 온라인 리뷰 사용자를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과 개인주의적인 미국보다는 집단주의적인 한국에서 eWOM의 효과는 더 큰 것으로 나타나 문화적 영향은 유의한 것으로 나타났다. 또한 소비자 수용성이라는 소비자 특성도 eWOM 효과(온라인 리뷰의 구매 직접영향정도)에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 그리고 온라인 경험도 유의한 영향을 미쳤는데, 인터넷 사용기간 보다는 현재의 인터넷 이용시간이나 보다 관련이 있는 온라인 쇼핑횟수와 같은 변수가 eWOM 효과에 유의한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.
