  • We have studied the atomic and electronic structure of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) on a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) sheet with intercalated atoms using first-principles calculations. The h-BN sheet is an insulator with the band gap about 6 eV and then it may a good candidate as a supporting dielectric substrate for graphene-based nanodevices. Especially, the h-BN sheet has the similar bond structure as graphene with a slightly longer lattice constant. For the computation, we use the Vienna ab initio simulation package (VASP). The generalized gradient approximation (GGA) in the form of the PBE-type parameterization is employed. The ions are described via the projector augmented wave potentials, and the cutoff energy for the plane-wave basis is set to 400 eV. To include weak van der Waals (vdW) interactions, we adopt the Grimme's DFT-D2 vdW correction based on a semi-empirical GGA-type theory. Our calculations reveal that the localized states appear at the zigzag edge of the GNR on the h-BN sheet due to the flat band of the zigzag edge at the Fermi level and the localized states rapidly decay into the bulk. The open-edged graphene with a large corrugation allows some space between graphene and h-BN sheet. Therefore, atoms or molecules can be intercalated between them. We have considered various types of atoms for intercalation. The atoms are initially placed at the edge of the GNR or inserted in between GNR and h-BN sheet to find the effect of intercalated atoms on the atomic and electronic structure of graphene. We find that the impurity atoms at the edge of GNR are more stable than in between GNR and h-BN sheet for all cases considered. The nickel atom has the lowest energy difference of ~0.2 eV, which means that it is relatively easy to intercalate the Ni atom in this structure. Finally, the magnetic properties of intercalated atoms between GNR and h-BN sheet are investigated.

  • The diamond synthesis by combustion flame method is considerably affected by the substrate surface temperature and its distribution which are mainly controlled by the ratio of mixed gas, $O_2/C_2H_2$. In order to elucidate the role of gas ratio in the diamond synthetic process by combustion flame, under various gas ratios (R=0.87~0.98; R=ratio of flow-rate of $O_2/C_2H_2$ gas) the substrate temperature was measured by using thermal video system and the morphological change of diamond crystals was analysed by using SEM, Raman spectroscope, and X-ray diffraction method. With increasing the gas ratio, i.e., decreasing the hydrocarbon content, the nucleation rate of diamond crystal was lowerd. It was also found that the morphology of diamond crystals changed from the cubo-octahedron type consisting of (100), (111) plane to the octahedron type of (111) plane. The increase of the substrate temperature consistently resulted in the increase of the nucleation rate as well as the growth rate of diamond crystals in which the surface of diamond crystal dominantly consisting of (100) plane.

  • The melt of highly purified Zn was poured by top pouring process into the open green sand mold, that was made by using the 3-plane L-sections pattern. After skin was formed, the unsolified melt was poured out by rolling-over. The thicknesses of skin for each different of castings were investigated with one dimension. The results obtained and could be summerzed as follows: 1) While the 3-plant L-sections castings were solidifying in the mold, solidification blocks of different section modulus in the castings were formed, i.e. 1-dimension divergency block, 2-dimension heat divergency block, 3-dimension heat divergency block, 2-dimension heat convergency block, and 3-dimension heat convergency block. 2) When the chill plate was set up to the mold in order to change section modulus artificially, heat divergency blocks and heat convergency blocks according to the shape of chill plate were revealed.

  • In this paper, we report the experimental setup and characterization of experimental results for the HTS antenna. The constructions of experimental setup must be fabricated, cautiously. We constructed the cryostat made of 3 stages which consists of radome, vacuum stage and helium refrigerator for the HTS antenna. The HTS antenna was mounted to cryostat and various characteristics were measured at room temperature and liquid nitrogen temperature, 77 K. Also the results for the HTS antenna and the gold antenna were compared in terms of reflection coefficient, E-plane and H-plane radiation pattern, input impedance, SWR and efficiency. It appeared that the HTS antenna was superior to gold counterpart over the all characteristics.

  • In the paper, a printed dual-dipole array antenna is presented. A 4-way planar SIW power divider is adopted for feeding the array antenna. The dual-dipole is adopted as radiation elements which greatly improves the impedance band. The measured bandwidth larger than 31 % for VSWR$\leq$1.5 operating near 14 GHz is achieved and in agreement with the simulated results. The radiation E-plane and H-plane radiation pattern is presented in the paper. The radiation gain is also presented in the paper.

  • An implantable CPW fed monopole antenna embedded into human tissue is proposed for ISM band biomedical applications. The proposed antenna is made compatible for implantation by embedding it in an alumina ceramic substrate (${\Box}_r=9.8$ and thickness=0.65 mm). The proposed antenna covers the ISM band of 2.45 GHz. The radiation parameters, such as return loss, E-Plane, H-Plane, are measured and analyzed, using the method of moments. The proposed antenna has substantial merits over other implanted antennas, like low profile, miniaturization, lower return loss, and better impedance matching and high gain.

  • This paper describes the design, fabrication, and measured results of a W-band Cassegrain antenna suitable for the target detecting fuze sensor. The Cassegrain antenna is designed using MATLAB and MWS of CST. We use the multi-mode horn antenna as a feeder. The measurement results are as follows: The gain is about 41dB; SLL is 17.7dB; 3dB beamwidth is about $1.51^{\circ}$ in E-plane and $1.45^{\circ}$ in H-plane. The magnitude of leakage signals is about 43.5mVpp when the fabricated antenna and the transceiver of the fuze sensor ire combined. As a result, the designed W-band Cassegrain antenna could be quite applicable to the target detecting fuze sensor.

  • We prepared silver Schottky contacts to O-polar and nonpolar m-plane bulk ZnO wafers. Then, by considering various transport models, we performed a comparative analysis of the current transport properties of Ag/bulk ZnO Schottky diodes, which were measured at 300, 200, and 100 K. The fitting of the forward bias current-voltage (I-V) characteristics revealed that the tunneling current is dominant as the transport component in both the samples. Compared to thermionic emission (TE), a stronger contribution of tunneling current was observed at low temperature. The reverse bias I-V characteristics were well fitted with the thermionic field emission (TFE) in both the samples. The presence of acceptor-like adsorbates, such as O2 and H2O, modulated the surface conductive state of ZnO, thereby affecting the tunneling effect. The degree of activation/passivation of acceptor-like adsorbates might be different in both the samples owing to their different surface morphologies and surface defects (e.g., oxygen vacancies).

  • Flow measurements on the propeller plane of a 180,000 TDW Bulk Carrier model are carried out using a 3D fiber optics LDV at a towing tank. Mean velocities are successfully obtained. The turbulence characteristics such as Reynolds stresses, skewnesses, and flatnesses, are also investigated. However, those turbulence characteristics may include some errors due to the characteristics of the towing-tank experiments.
