  • This paper presents multibit Sigma-Delta ADC using noise-shaped dynamic element matching(DEM). 5-bit flash ADC for multibit quantization in Sigma Delta modulator offers the following advantages such as lower quantization noise, more accurate white-noise level and more stability over single quantization. For the feedback paths consisting of DAC, the DAC element should have a high matching requirement in order to maintain the linearity performance which can be obtained by the modulator with a multibit quantizer. The DEM algorithm is implemented in such a way as to minimize additional delay within the feedback loop of the modulator Using this algorithm, distortion spectra from DAC linearity errors are shaped. Sigma Delta ADC achieves 82dB signal to noise ratio over 615H7z bandwidth, and 62mW power dissipation at a sampling frequency of 19.6MHz. This Sigma Delta ADC is designed to use 0.25um CMOS technology with 2.5V supply voltage and verified by HSPICE simulation.

  • The conventional method of improving the transient stability in a power system is the use of reactive power compensation devices, such as the STATCOM and SVC. However, this traditional method cannot prevent the rapid voltage collapse brought about by the stalling of the motor due to a system fault. On the other hand, the ESS (Energy Storage System) provides fast-acting, flexible reactive and active power control. The fast-acting power compensation provided by an energy storage system plays a significant role in enhancing the transient stability after a major fault in the power system. In this paper, a method of enhancing the transient stability using an energy storage system is proposed for power systems including a dynamic load, such as a large motor. The effectiveness of the energy storage system compared to conventional devices in enhancing the transient stability of the power system is presented. The results of the simulations show that the simultaneous injection of active and reactive power can enhance the transient stability more effectively.

  • This paper discusses a probabilistic method for power system security assessment. The security analysis relates to the ability of the electric power systems to survive sudden disturbances such as electric short circuits or unanticipated loss of system elements. It consists of both steady state and dynamic security analyses, which are not two separate issues but should be considered together. In steady state security analysis including voltage security analysis, the analysis checks that the system is operated within security limits by OPF (optimal power flow) after the transition to a new operating point. Until now, many utilities have difficulty in including dynamic aspects due to computational capabilities. On the other hand. dynamic security analysis is required to ensure that the transition may lead to an acceptable operating condition. Transient stability, which is the ability of power systems to maintain synchronism when subjected to a large disturbance. is a principal component in dynamic security analysis. Usually any loss of synchronism may cause additional outages and make the present steady state analysis of the post-contingency condition inadequate for unstable cases. This is the reason for the need of dynamic studies in power systems. Probabilistic criterion can be used to recognize the probabilistic nature of system components while considering system security. In this approach. we do not have to assign any predetermined margin of safety. A comprehensive conceptual framework for probabilistic static and dynamic assessment is presented in this paper. The simulation results of the Western System Coordinating Council (WSCC) system compare an analytical method with Monte-Carlo simulation (MCS).

  • A Fuzzy Logic Sliding Mode Control or FLSMC for the uninterruptible power system (UPS) is presented, which is tracking a sinusoidal ac voltage with specified frequency and amplitude. The FLSMC algorithm combines feedforward strategy with the Variable Structure Control (VSC) or Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and fuzzy logic control. The control function is derived to guarantee the existence of a sliding mode. FLSMC has an advantage that the stability of FLSMC can be proved easily in terms of VSC. Furthermore, the rules of the proposed FLSMC are independent of the number of system state variables because the input of the suggested controller is fuzzy quantity sliding surface value. Hence the rules of the proposed FLSMC can be reduced. The simulation results illustrate that the purposed approach gives a significant improvement on the tracking performances. It has the small overshoot in the transient and the smaller chattering in the steady state than the conventional VSC. Moreover, its can achieve the requirements of robustness and can supply a high-quality voltage power source in the presence of plant parameter variations, external load disturbances and nonlinear dynamic interactions.

  • In this paper, it is suggested that the selection method of parameter of Power System Stabilizer(PSS) with robustness in low frequency oscillation for Static VAR Compensator(SVC) using a Real Variable Elitism Genetic Algorithm(RVEGA). A SVC, one of the Flexible AC Transmission System(FACTS), constructed by a fixed capacitor(FC) and a thyristor controlled reactor(TCR), is designed and implemented to improve the damping of a synchronous generator, as well as controlling the system voltage. The proposed PSS parameters are optimized using RVEGA in order to maintain optimal operation of generator under the various operating conditions. To decrease the computational time, real variable string is adopted. To verify the robustness of the proposed method, we considered the dynamic response of generator speed deviation and generator terminal voltage by applying a power fluctuation and three-phase fault at heavy load, normal load and light load. Thus, we prove the usefulness of proposed method to improve the stability of single machine-infinite bus with SVC system.

  • This paper presents a new control approach for designing a coordinated controller for static VAR compensator system. A SVC constructed by a Fixed Capacitor and a Thyristor Controlled Reactor is designed and implemented to improve the damping of a synchronous generator, as well as controlling the system voltage. A design of linear quadratic controller based on optimal controller depends on choosing weighting matrices. A coordinated optimal controller is achieved by minimizing a quadratic performance index using dynamic programming techniques. The selection of weighting matrices is usually carried out by trial and error which is not a trivial problem. We proposed a efficient method using GA of finding weighting matrices for optimal control law. Thus, we prove the usefulness of proposed method to improve the stability of single machine-infinite bus with SVC system.

  • This paper presents multibit Sigma-Delta ADC using Leslie-Singh Structure to Improve nonlinearity of feedback loop. 4-bit flash ADC for multibit Quantization in Sigma Delta modulator offers the following advantages such as lower quantization noise, more accurate white-noise level and more stability over single quantization. For the feedback paths consisting of DAC, the DAC element should have a high matching requirement in order to maintain the linearity performance which can be obtained by the modulator with a multibit quantizer. Thus a Sigma-Delta ADC usually adds the dynamic element matching digital circuit within feedback loop. It occurs complexity of Sigma-Delta Circuit and increase of power dissipation. In this paper using the Leslie-Singh Structure for improving nonliearity of ADC. This structure operate at low oversampling ratio but is difficult to achieve high resolution. So in this paper propose improving loop filter for single-bit feedback multi-bit quantization Sigma-Delta ADC. It obtained 94.3dB signal to noise ratio over 615kHz bandwidth, and 62mW power dissipation at a sampling frequency of 19.6MHz. This Sigma Delta ADC is fabricated in 0.25um CMOS technology with 2.5V supply voltage.

  • This paper presents the various analysis of the power system for operating the new SIHWA tidal power plant. In the analysis of the power system, summer load condition of 2011 is used. Especially, power flow, fault current, voltage and contingency of SIHWA tidal power plant area are analyzed by using PSS/E and there is no problem for the dynamic stability simulation. The new SIHWA tidal power plant is located in near metropolitan area where about 43% amount of the system load is consumed. Therefore, transmission losses are reduced. In addition, system marginal price can be lowered by generating the new SIHWA tidal power plant. The generation pattern of the SIHWA tidal plant is analyzed and the changes of generation are presented for various water levels by control of the rotor angle alpha and beta in water wheel generator.
