The joined-wing is a new concept of the airplane wing. The fore-wing and the aft-wing are joined together in a joined-wing. The range and loiter are longer than those of a conventional wing. The joined-wing can lead to increased aerodynamic performance and reduction of the structural weight. In this research, dynamic response optimization of a joined-wing is carried out by using equivalent static loads. Equivalent static loads are made to generate the same displacement field as the one from dynamic loads at each time step of dynamic analysis. The gust loads are considered as critical loading conditions and they dynamically act on the structure of the aircraft. It is difficult to identify the exact gust load profile. Therefore, the dynamic loads are assumed to be (1-cosine) function. Static response optimization is performed for the two cases. One uses the same design variable definition as dynamic response optimization. The other uses the thicknesses of all elements as design variables. The results are compared.
In this paper, an analytical model of a cantilever beam having a midpoint load is considered for structural optimization and design. This involves creation of the geometry through a parametric study of all design variables. For this purpose, the optimization of the cantilever beam was elaborated in order to find the optimum geometry which minimizes its volume eventually for minimum weight by FEM (finite element method) analysis. Such geometry can be obtained by different combinations of width and height, so that the beam may have the same cross-sectional area, yet different dynamic behavior. So for optimum safe design, besides minimum volume it should have minimum vibration as well. In order to predict vibration, different dynamic analyses were performed simultaneously to identify the resonant frequencies and mode shapes belonging to the lowest three modes of vibration. Next, by introducing damping effects, the tip displacement and bending stress at the fixed end was evaluated under dynamic loads of varying frequency. Investigation of the results clearly shows that only structural analysis is not enough to predict the optimum values of dimension for safe design it must be aided by dynamic analysis as well.

An improved optimization algorithm for multi-objective and multi-level (MO/ML) optimum design of steel frames is proposed in this paper. In order to optimize the steel frames under seismic load, two main objective functions need to be considered for minimizing the structural weight and maximizing the strain energy. For the efficiency of the proposed method, well known multi-level optimization techniques using decomposition method that separately utilizes both system-level and element-level optimizations and an artificial constraint deletion technique are incorporated in the algorithm. And also dynamic analysis is executed to evaluate the implicit function of structural strain energy at each iteration step. To save the numerical efforts, an efficient reanalysis technique through sensitivity analysis of dynamic properties is unposed in the paper. The efficiency and robustness of the improved MOML algorithm, compared with a plain MOML algorithm, is successfully demonstrated in the numerical examples.
This paper presents an integrated wind-induced dynamic analysis and computer-based design optimization technique for minimizing the structural cost of general tall buildings subject to static and dynamic serviceability design criteria. Once the wind-induced dynamic response of a tall building structure is accurately determined and the optimal serviceability design problem is explicitly formulated, a rigorously derived Optimality Criteria (OC) method is to be developed to achieve the optimal distribution of element stiffness of the structural system satisfying the wind-induced drift and acceleration design constraints. The effectiveness and practicality of the optimal design technique are illustrated by a full-scale 60-story building with complex 3D mode shapes. Both peak resultant acceleration criteria and frequency dependent modal acceleration criteria are considered and their influences on the optimization results are highlighted. Results have shown that the use of various acceleration criteria has different implications in the habitability evaluations and subsequently different optimal design solutions. The computer based optimization technique provides a powerful tool for the lateral drift and occupant comfort design of tall building structures.

Most of the structure of the real world is influenced under dynamic loads. However, when structure analysis and the structural optimization is performed, it is assumed that the static load acts on structure. When considering the actual load of dynamic loads in order to take into account a variety of loads, computational resources and time becomes a big burden in terms of cost. However, considering only the simple static load condition is not preferable for structural safety. For this reason, a lot of studies have been conducted trying to compensate this trouble by applying weight factor or replacing dynamic load with the equivalent static load. In this study, structural optimization techniques for structures under dynamic loads is proposed by applying the equivalent static load. From previous study, after determining the positions of equivalent static load based on primary degrees of freedom, the equivalent static load is calculated through the optimization process. In this process, the equivalent static load optimization of previous research is complemented by adding constraints to avoid excessively large load extraction. In numerical examples, dynamic load is applied to the truss structure and the plate. Then, the reliability of the proposed optimization technique is verified by carrying out size optimization with the equivalent static load.

Various aspects of structural optimization techniques under transient loads are extensively reviewed. The main themes of the paper are treatment of time dependent constraints, calculation of design sensitivity, and approximation. Each subject is reviewed with the corresponding papers that have been published since 1970s. The treatment of time dependent constraints in both the direct method and the transformation method is discussed. Two ways of calculating design sensitivity of a structure under transient loads are discussed - direct differentiation method and adjoint variable method. The approximation concept mainly focuses on re- sponse surface method in crashworthiness and local approximation with the intermediate variable Especially, as an approximated optimization technique, Equivalent Static Load method which takes advantage of the well-established static response optimization technique is introduced. And as an application area of dynamic response optimization technique, the structural optimization in flexible multibody dynamic systems is re- viewed in the viewpoint of the above three themes

This paper provides the resuIts on the evaluation of dynamic characteristics of the optimized shells. Five fundamental technologies such as computer-aided geometric design, automatic mesh generation, shell finite element, design sensitivity analysis and shell optimization process, are used for shell optimization maximizing the fundamental natural frequency. A dome shell is adopted for the shell shape optimization and the dynamic characteristic of the optimized shell such as the variation of natural frequencies is then investigated. From the investigation, more constraint functions related to shell natural frequencies is necessarily required to effectively control dynamic characteristics of the optimized shells.

Due to difficulty of considering dynamic load in side of a computer resource and computing time, it is common that external load is assumed as ideal static load. However, structural analysis under static load cannot guarantee the safety of structural design. Recently, the systematic method to construct equivalent static load from the given dynamic load has been proposed. Previous study has calculated equivalent static load through the optimization procedure under displacement constraints. And previously reported works to distribute equivalent static load were based on ad hoc methods. However, it is appropriate to take into account the stress constraint for the safety design. Moreover, the improper selection of loading position may results in unreliable structural design. The present study proposes the methodology to optimize an equivalent static which distributed on the primary DOFs, DOFs of the constraint elements, DOF of an external load as positions. In conclusion, the reliability of proposed method is demonstrated through a global optimization.
Concentrated Solar Photovoltaic (CPV) is a promising alternative to conventional solar structures. These solar tracking structures need to be optimized to be competitive against other types of energy production. In particular, the selection of the structural parameters needs to be optimized with regards to the dynamic wind response. This study aims to evaluate the effect of the main structural parameters, as selected in the preliminary design phase, on the wind response and then on the weight of the steel support structure. A parametric study has been performed where parameters influencing dynamic wind response are varied. The study is performed using a semi-deterministic time-domain wind analysis method. Unsteady aerodynamic model is applied for the shape of the CPV structure collector at different configurations in conjunction with a consistent mass-spring-damper model with the corresponding degrees of freedom to describe the dynamic response of the system. It is shown that, unlike the static response analysis, the variation of the peak wind response with many structural parameters is highly nonlinear because of the dynamic wind action. A steel structural optimization process reveals that close attention to structural and site wind parameters could lead to optimal design of CPV steel support structure.

This paper discusses the multi-level optimization method in dynamic optimization problems through stiffened plate of ship structures. In structural optimization the computational cost increases rapidly as the number of design variables increases. And we need a great amount of cal-culation and time on problems of modified dynamic characteristics of large and complicated struc-tures. In this paper the multi-level optimization is proposed which decreases computational time and cost. the dynamic optimum designs of stiffened plate that control the natural frequency and minimize weight subjected to constraints condition are derived. The way to apply the multi-level optimization methods in this study follow: In the first step the dynamic characteristics is controlled for the two-dimensional model of stiffened plate by sensitivity analysis and quasi-least squares methods. In the second step the cross-section of the stiffener is decided so that the weight is minimized under needed constraints by the steepest descent or ascent method. In the third the three-dimensional model is made based on the results of the first step and the second step confirmation and finer tuning of the objective function are carried out. It is shown that the results are effective in the optimum modification for dynamic characteristics of the stiffened plate.
