  • Flash memory becomes increasingly popular as data storage for various devices because of its versatile features such as non-volatility, light weight, low power consumption, and shock resistance. Flash memory, however, has some distinct characteristics that make today's disk-based database technology unsuitable, such as no in-place update and the asymmetric speed of read and write operations. As a result, most traditional disk-based database systems may not provide the best attainable performance on flash memory. To maximize the database performance on flash memory, some approaches have been proposed where only the changes made to the database, i.e., logs, are written to another empty place that has born erased in advance. In this paper, we propose an efficient log management scheme for flash-based database systems. Unlike the previous approaches, the proposed approach stores logs in specially allocated blocks, called log blocks. By evenly distributing logs across log blocks, the proposed approach can significantly reduce the number of write and erase operations. Our performance evaluation shows that the proposed approaches can improve the overall system performance by reducing the number of write and erase operation compared to the previous ones.

  • An extension of the weighted buddy system, called the extended-weighted buddy system, for dynamic memory allocation in an object-oriented computer is presented. The extended-weighted buddy system allows block sizes of $2^k,\;3*2^k,\;5*2^k,\;7*2^k$, whereas the original weighted buddy system allowed block sizes of $2^k\;and\;3*2^k$. This extension is achieved at only the cost of additional 3 bits per block for memory management unit. Simulation results are presented which compare our method with the weighted buddy system. These results indicate that, for uniform request distributions, our system has less internal memory fragmentation than the weighted buddy system(approximately 60%). And, for exponential request distributions, it has less internal memory fragmentation than the weighted buddy method (approximately 50%). The external fragmentation is greater for this system than the weighted buddy system. But, our system has less total memory fragmentation for exponential request distributions, and two systems take a similar total memory fragmentation for uniform request distributions, so we can substitutes the extended-weighted buddy system for weighted buddy system.

  • Due to advantages of NAND flash memory such as non-volatility, low access latency, low energy consumption, light weight, small size and shock resistance, it has become a better alternative over traditional magnetic disk drives, and has been widely used. Traditional DBMSs including mobile DBMSs may run on flash memory without any modification by using Flash Translation Layer (FTL), which emulates a random access block device to hide the characteristics of flash memory such as "erase-before-update". However, most existing FTLs are optimized for file systems, not for DBMSs, and traditional DBMSs are not aware of them. Also, traditional DBMSs do not consider the characteristics of flash memory. In this paper, we propose a flash-conscious storage system for DBMSs that utilizes flash memory as a main storage medium, and carefully put the characteristics of flash memory into considerations. The proposed flash-conscious storage system exploits log records to avoid costly update operations. It is shown that the proposed storage system outperforms the state.

  • In case of a multimedia application which deals with streaming data, in terms of cache management, cache loses its efficiency due to weak temporal locality of the data. This means that when data have been brought into cache, much of the data are supposed to be replaced without being accessed again during its service. However, there is a good chance that such multimedia data has a commanding locality in it. In this paper, to take advantage of the memory reference regularity which typically innates even in the multimedia data showing up its weak temporal locality, a method is suggested. The suggested method with the feature of dynamic regular-stride reference prefetching can identify for 2-dimensional array format(block pattern). The suggested method is named as block-reference-prediction-technique (BRPT) since it identifies a block pattern and place an address to be prefetched by the regulation of the block format. BRPT proved to be reassuring to reduce memory reference time significantly for applications having abundant block patterns although new rule has complicated the prefetching system even further.

  • In this study, to capture the skewness and kurtosis detected in both conditional and unconditional return distributions of the stock markets of Kazakhstan and Russia, two versions of normal mixture GARCH models are employed. The data set consists of daily observations of the Kazakhstan and Russia stock prices, and world crude oil price, covering the period from 1 June 2006 through 1 March 2021. From the empirical results, incorporating the long memory effect on the returns not only provides better descriptions of dynamic behaviors of the stock market prices but also plays a significant role in improving a better understanding of the return dynamics. In addition, normal mixture models for time-varying volatility provide a better fit to the conditional densities than the usual GARCH specifications and has an important advantage that the conditional higher moments are time-varying. This implies that the volatility skews implied by normal mixture models are more likely to exhibit the features of risk and the direction of the information flow is regime-dependent. The findings of this study contain useful information for diverse purposes of cross-border stock market players such as asset allocation, portfolio management, risk management, and market regulations.

  • This research is to design an effective buffer structure and its management for flash memory based high performance SSDs (Solid State Disks). Specifically conventional SSDs tend to show asymmetrical performance in read and /write operations, in addition to a limited number of erase operations. To minimize the number of erase operations and write latency, the degree of interleaving levels over multiple flash memory chips should be maximized. Thus, to increase the interleaving effect, an effective buffer structure is proposed for the SSD with a hybrid address mapping scheme and super-block management. The proposed buffer operation is designed to provide performance improvement and enhanced flash memory life cycle. Also its management is based on a new selection scheme to determine random and sequential accesses, depending on execution characteristics, and a method to enhance the size of sequential access unit by aggressive merging. Experiments show that a newly developed mapping table under the MBA is more efficient than the basic simple management in terms of maintenance and performance. The overall performance is increased by around 35% in comparison with the basic simple management.

  • The workloads of large high-performance computing (HPC) scientific applications are steadily becoming "bursty" due to variable resource demands throughout their execution life-cycles. However, the over-provisioning of virtual resources for optimal performance during execution remains a key challenge in the scheduling of scientific HPC applications. While over-provisioning of virtual resources guarantees peak performance of scientific application in virtualized environments, it results in increased amounts of idle resources that are unavailable for use by other applications. Herein, we proposed a memory resource reconfiguration approach that allows the quick release of idle memory resources for new applications in OS-level virtualized systems, based on the applications resource-usage pattern profile data. We deployed a scientific workflow application in Docker, a light-weight OS-level virtualized system. In the proposed approach, memory allocation is fine-tuned to containers at each stage of the workflows execution life-cycle. Thus, overall memory resource utilization is improved.

  • The rapid evolution of the IoT has paved the way for new opportunities in smart city domains, including e-health, smart homes, and precision agriculture. However, this proliferation of services demands effective SLAs between customers and service providers, especially for critical services. Difficulties arise in maintaining the integrity of such agreements, especially in vulnerable wireless environments. This study proposes a novel SLA management model that uses an SDN-Enabled WSN consisting of wireless nodes to interact with smart contracts in a straightforward manner. The proposed model ensures the persistence of network metrics and SLA provisions through smart contracts, eliminating the need for intermediaries to audit payment and compensation procedures. The reliability and verifiability of the data prevents doubts from the contracting parties. To meet the high-performance requirements of the blockchain in the proposed model, low-cost algorithms have been developed for implementing blockchain technology in wireless sensor networks with low-energy and low-capacity nodes. Furthermore, a cryptographic signature control code is generated by wireless nodes using the in-memory private key and the dynamic random key from the smart contract at runtime to prevent tampering with data transmitted over the network. This control code enables the verification of end-to-end data signatures. The efficient generation of dynamic keys at runtime is ensured by the flexible and high-performance infrastructure of the SDN architecture.

  • Modern GPU can execute general purpose computation on the graphic processing unit, and provide high performance by exploiting many core on GPU. To run AES algorithm efficiently, parallel computational resources are required. However, computational resource of CPU architecture are not enough to cryptographic algorithm such as AES whereas GPU architecture has mass parallel computation resources. Therefore, this paper reduce the time to execute AES by employing parallel computational resource on GPGPU. Unfortunately, AES cannot utilize computational resource on GPGPU since it isn't suitable to GPGPU architecture. In this paper, IPC based dynamic SM management technique are proposed to efficiently execute AES on GPGPU. IPC based dynamic SM management can increase and decrease the number of active SMs by using IPC in run-time. According to simulation results, proposed technique improve the performance by increasing resource utilization compared to baseline GPGPU architecture. The results show that AES improve the performance by 41.2% on average.
