  • Dynamic memory allocators are used for embedded systems to increase flexibility to manage unpredictable inputs and outputs. As embedded systems generally run continuously during their whole lifetime, fragmentation is one of important factors for designing the memory allocator. To minimize fragmentation, a budgeted memory allocator that has dedicated storage for predetermined objects is proposed. A budgeting method based on a mathematical analysis is also presented. Experimental results show that the size of the heap storage can be reduced by up to 49.5% by using the budgeted memory allocator instead of a state-of-the-art allocator. The reduced fragmentation compensates for the increased code size due to budgeted allocator when the heap storage is larger than 16KB.

  • This paper proposes a real-time dynamic storage allocation algorithm QSHF(quick-segregated-half-fit) that provides various memory allocation policies. that manages a free block list per each word size for memory requests of small size good(segregated)-fit policy that manages a free list per proper range size for medium size requests and half-fit policy that manages a free list per proper range size for medium size requests and half-fit policy that manages a free list per each power of 2 size for large size requests. The proposed algorithm has the time complexit O(1) and makes us able to easily estimate the worst case execution time(WCET). This paper also suggests two algorithm that finds the proper free list for the requested memory size in predictable time and if the found list is empty then finds next available non-empty free list in fixed time. In order to confirm efficiency of the proposed algorithm we simulated the memory utilization of each memory allocation policy. The simulation result showed that each policy guarantees the constant WCET regardless of memory size but they have trade-off between memory utilization and list management overhead.

  • Existing dynamic memory allocation schemes for general purpose operating system can not directly apply to the wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Because these schemes did not consider features of WSNs, they consume a lot of energy and waste the memory space caused by fragmentation. In this paper, we found features of WSNs applications and made the model which adapts these issues. Through this research, we suggest the slab allocator that reduces the execution time and the memory management space. Also, we evaluate the performance of our scheme by comparing to one of the previous systems.

  • Java has been established as one of the most widely-used languages owing to its support of object-oriented concepts, safety, and flexibility. Garbage collection in the Java virtual machine is a core component that relieves application programmers of difficulties related to memory management. In this paper, we propose a memory manager and a garbage collector that is implemented on a embedded java virtual machine. The memory manager divide a heap into various-sized cells and manages it as blocks of same-sized cells. So it is possible to allocate and free memory fast. We adopted the 3-color based Mark & Sweep garbage collector as our base algorithm and we propose 4-color based Mark & Sweep garbage collector for supporting multi-threaded program. The proposed garbage collector occurs memory fragmentation but we show through a experiment that the fragmentation ratio is almost fixed according as we create objects continuously.

  • Many embedded systems are supporting Java as their software platform via Java virtual machine. Java virtual machine manages memory automatically by providing automatic memory management, i.e. garbage collector. Because only scarce memory is available to embedded system, Java virtual machine should use small memory and manage it efficiently. This paper introduces two memory management techniques to exploit small memory in Java virtual machine which can execute multiple Java applications concurrently. First, compaction based garbage collection is introduced to overcome external fragmentation problem in presence of immovable memory area. Then garbage collector driven class unloading is introduced to reduce memory use of unnecessary loaded classes. We implemented these techniques in working embedded system and observed that they are very efficient, since more Java applications are able to be executed concurrently and memory use is also reduced with these techniques.

  • As the performance of the mobile terminal becomes higher, the power consumption gradually increases. As a result, power management is one of the most important issues in mobile system with battery. In this paper, we describe an DPM(Dynamic Power Management) using DVS(Dynamic Power Management) as a power management mechanism in Qplus operating system. DVS generally considers a specific device such as CPU, whereas we consider the relations with other hardware components as well as each component. We specially focus on the relation between CPU, memory and LCD devices. We also designs a kernel monitor to collect information to decide the policy for power management. According to the experimental results, the proposed method enables to save much power.

  • In this paper, a dynamic power management system is proposed to reduce energy consumption for multiple clients in cloud computing environments. The proposed system monitors both keyboard and mouse input from the user, available memory, and CPU usage in the virtual machine. If the system detects no keyboard and mouse input for a certain amount of time and both available memory and CPU usage reach predefined threshold value, the manager in the virtual machine orders the client to shutdown the client machine, which results in significant power save. The developed system is applied to the real university computer lab and the performance of the system is evaluated.

  • Performance of the mobile devices greatly depends on the efficient resource management because they are usually resource-restricted. In particular, the dynamic storage allocation algorithms very important part of the mobile device's operating system and OS-like software platform. The existing dynamic storage allocation algorithms did not consider application's execution style and the type, life-time, and characteristics of memory objects that the application uses. Those algorithms, as a result, could not manage memory efficiently Therefore, this Paper analyzes the mobile application's execution characteristics and proposes anew dynamic storage allocation algorithm which saves the memory space and improves mobile application's execution speed. The test result shows that the proposed algorithm works 6.5 times faster than the linked-list algorithm[11], 2.5 times faster better than the Doug. Lea's algorithm[12] and 10.5 times faster than the Brent algorithm[14].

  • Existing buffer management schemes for shared-memory output queueing switches can be classified into two types: In the first type, some constant amount of memory space is guaranteed to each virtual queue using static queue thresholds. The static threshold method (ST) belongs to this type. On the other hand, the second type of approach tries to maximize the buffer utilization in 머 locating buffer memories. The complete sharing (CS) method is classified into this type. In the case of CS, it is very hard to protect regular traffic from mis-behaving traffic flows while in the case of ST the thresholds can not be adjusted according to varying traffic conditions. In this paper, we propose a new buffer management method called weighted dynamic thresholds (WDT) which can process packet flows based on loss priorities for quality-of-service (QoS) functionalities with fairly high memory utilization factors. We verified the performance of the proposed scheme through computer simulations.

  • In this paper, we propose a new load forecasting method for smart air conditioning (A/C) based on the modified thermodynamics of indoor temperature and the unbiased finite memory estimator (UFME). Based on modified first-order thermodynamics, the dynamic behavior of indoor temperature can be described by the time-domain state-space model, and an accurate estimate of indoor temperature can be achieved by the proposed UFME. In addition, a reliable A/C load forecast can be obtained using the proposed method. Our study involves the experimental validation of the proposed A/C load forecasting method and communication construction between DR server and HEMS in a test bed. Through experimental data sets, the effectiveness of the proposed estimation method is validated.
