  • This study aims to identify factors of life satisfaction of the adults with developmental disabilities, focusing on the comparison between young and old. Data are collected through in-depth interview of the adults with developmental disabilities as well as via workers proxy responses at the group home. Regression model analysis is conducted based on 387 cases. The result shows that the young adults with developmental disabilities are more likely to satisfied with life when they evaluate job performance of workers at the group home and when they are more actively involved in community activities. For the old adults with developmental disabilities, life satisfaction is positively associated with their evaluation of job performance of workers at the group home as in the young adults. In addition, life satisfaction of the old adults is higher when they feel less fatigue. It is also higher for those with more choices on residence and higher level of social activities. The findings reveals that enhancement of life satisfaction for the old adults with developmental disabilities dwelling at group home require supports and services for health and social activities different from other ages. It shares the general ideas that service efforts should be made for needs and desires of the recipients. The present study suggests to expand our research interests to include the disabled in danger of early aging, such as the persons with Down Syndrome and the persons with intellectual disability and cerebral palsy, and look into their particular needs.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the burden and caregiving satisfaction of primary family caregivers of older adults with dementia, and to identify cultural predictors and non-cultural predictors of burden and caregiving satisfaction. This study included 112 primary family caregivers of community-dwelling older adults with dementia who utilized 13 dementia day care centers in Seoul or Gyeonggi-do. Data were collected by survey questionnaires. The majority of the primary caregivers were female (81%) and daughters-in-law (46%). The mean burden score was 49.4 and the mean caregiving safisfaction score was 42.3. Regression analyses revealed that the significant predictors of primary caregivers' burden were the non-cultural factors of caregiver's perceived health (β= .421, p= .049) and care recipient's memory and behavioral problems (β= .183, p= .041). The cultural factor of familism (β= .466, p= .005) was the only significant predictor of caregiving satisfaction. There is more need to develop programs which improve caregiver's burden and caregiving satisfaction. Strategies to increase caregiver's utilization of the programs also need to be developed.

  • The study aimed to identify major factors related to global self-rated health of the community-dwelling elderly people in rural areas. Interviews were conducted with 433 persons over 65 years of age. The socio-economic characteristics, chronic disease status, measures of functional and mental health, life satisfaction, health-related behaviors including smoking, drinking, exercise, social activity, dietary habit, and food intakes were analyzed to determine their influence on self-rated health index. Data on food intake were obtained through the 24-hour recall method. The self-rated health of rural elderly was poor or very poor as reported by 42.6% and 52.4% of the men and women, respectively. Poor self-rated health was found to be related to elderly aged $65{\sim}74$, female, absence of work, more chronic diseases, dependence on Instrumental Activity Daily Living (IADL), higher mental unhealthy days, lower current life satisfaction, less social activity, lower dietary habit scores, lower intake of total food, fruit, eggs, fishes & shell fishes, vitamin C (%RDA), and Nutrient Adequacy Ratio (NAR). The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that poor self-rated health index is significantly associated with more chronic diseases, mental unhealthy days, gastrointestinal disease, musculoskeletal disease, less social activity, and lower intake of fruits. The results also suggested that improving the nutritional status and functional ability, and reducing the burden of chronic diseases are beneficial to the self-rated health index of the elderly.

The questionary subjects were adult 40 and over who inhabited in Busan and surveyed residential career about residential mobility. The analysis result of statistical data and result of questionary reveals similar result every articles, the summaries are as follows : Examining housing where the respondent live presently, apartment dominate absolutely high ratio as housing type and owner-occupation as housing tenure type, and housing size is about 30 pyeong, dwelling period is 6 years to 10 years. Saving and loan hold a large majority to make housing capital, that means, they apply housing finance to getting own housing despite it is impossible with present household's income to have owner-occupation of desired housing. This is different custom ours from foreign's that rent a house. However, as aspect of residential satisfaction, most household recognised that quality is improved, because residential mobility expanded housing size and changed tenure type and showed fairly high satisfaction with their present resident.

  • Community-based group exercise programs for people with chronic stroke are relatively uncommon in Korea. In addition, it is currently not known whether a community-based group exercise program is effective or not. The purpose of this study was to evaluate an 8 week community-based functional exercise program for its effects on balance performance and occupational performance in persons with chronic stroke. Twenty-five community-dwelling individuals with stroke participated in this program. Outcome of the program was assessed by the Berg Balance Scale and the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM). The functional exercise program lasted for eight weeks, with a 1-hour program twice per week and it consisted of mobility, stability, balance, functional strength, and gait training. The subjects were trained by one physical therapist but were under one-to-one supervision from students. The data of sixteen individuals who scored more than 24 on the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) were analyzed. There was a significant effect both in terms of the COPM Performance Score & the Satisfaction Score (p=.002) and with the Berg Balance Score (p=.001). It was found that a short-term community-based exercise program could improve both performance of activities and balance. Further, all subjects reported that they were satisfied with this program.

  • As of November 1st 2010, 59% of overall residences in Korea are apartments with 8,185,000 households and when including the multi-unit houses, 71.0% of the overall residences are multifamily houses. The apartments have become the most universal form of residence in Korea and its' relative weight will continuously increase in the future. Meanwhile, Korea has turned into aging society in 2000 and will turn into the super-aged society by 2026 to display the world's fastest speed for aging. Majority of the elderly will spend their declining years in apartments. To understand the residence consciousness and its' properties for unit housing of the elderly residing in apartments, the present study obtained the following results through surveying the 541 nationwide samples. First, the elderly most prefer the mid and high levels(6-9th floors, or 10-15th floors) of apartments. Second, the elderly couples most prefer areas of $85m^2$ while single elderly most prefer $60m^2$. Third, the elderly feel the most inconveniences in bathrooms and showers. Fourth, safety accidents in dwelling of the elderly have no significant correlation with age, gender or their possessed diseases. Fifth, the elderly displayed high satisfaction for their bedrooms. Sixth, there were less tendencies for elderly to feel lack of storage spaces or conduct remodeling. As a result of the analysis, all apartment houses of Korea must support the physical aging of residents and prevent safety accidents in houses to enable Korean aging in place.

  • Apartments amount to 58.3%, the highest proportion of domestic housing types. These apartments' lifespan (approximately 27 years) are one-third of the developed countries' housing lifespan due to the property developers and mass production. It is significantly short-cycle period considering the original physical lifespan of the apartment housing are 60 years. It has caused economic loss and environmental degradation. In recent years, research and development for the long life of the apartment housing has been actively performed, but it is limited on reconstruction and new construction. Reconstruction of existing a number of high-rise apartments is difficult owing to restrictions on the floor area ratio allowing for 40 years limit of decay resistance after the completion. Improving lifespan of the building has recently begun to receive attention as an alternative to remodeling. However, These sort of remodeling techniques tend to be focused on technology developed for the physical life extension. That means developing the techniques about dwelling-unit environment for residents satisfaction are required as well as improving physical construction. The purpose of this study is to propose and verify the Participatory Design Technique which can help the residents as the active participation in the design decision-making process.
