  • This paper proposes a new method for dynamic modeling of electrorheological(ER) damper considering fluid compressibility. After describing configuration and operating principle of the ER damper, a quasi-static modeling of the ER damper is conducted on the basis of Bingham model of ER fluid. Subsequently, the dynamic model for describing the ER damper considering compressibility of ER fluid and gas chamber is obtained using the lumped parameter method. This method includes dynamic motions of annular duct, upper chamber, lower chamber and connecting pipe. The hysteresis behavior of the ER damper is evaluated through computer simulations and compared with experimental results. In addition, the hysteresis behavior due to the compressibility of ER fluid and gas chamber is investigated through computer simulations.

  • Complex dispersion relations in a cylindrical, foam-lined duct were successfully identified by using an iterative Prony series method. Techniques for using the iterative procedure successfully are described in detail, particularly with regard to model order selection and the identification of parameter starting values. It is shown that modal wave speeds and spatial attenuations per wavelength can be derived from the complex dispersion relations obtained using the iterative procedure. In addition, a finite element simulation is shown to well represent corresponding experimental measurement in terms of modal wave speeds and spatial attenuations.

  • This research is about the sound attenuation in the duct with lining sound absorbing material in it. Many previous researches assumed the property of lining material as locally-reacting. As the thickness of lining material thickens or the upper limit of the interested frequency range goes higher, there is a growing tendency for the experiment results to deviate from the theoretical results based on the locally reacting assumption. In this paper, the acoustic performance of the two-dimensional dissipative silencer with the propagation of sound in the absorbent was derived theoretically and calculated. The effect of increase of sound absorbing material is also considered. These results are compared from the previous results with using the locally-reacting property of sound absorbing material.

  • Because of complex structure of inlet and outlet flows, the performance of centrifugal fans used in a household refrigerator is affected by many parameters of duct system surrounding the fans. In this paper, the performance of a centrifugal fan is numerically analysed according to shapes of inlet bell-mouth. To improve performance of the centrifugal fan, some design parameters are selected for comparison. On a basis of these comparison, optimum shape of inlet bell-mouth is proposed to maximise the flow rate of the fan.

  • In this paper, the fuzzy LMS algorithm where the convergence coefficient is computed by a fuzzy logic controller was proposed. The proposed fuzzy LMS algorithm showed better convergence property and stability than conventional LMS algorithms. The estimation error and misadaptation degree were used for Input of the fuzzy logic controller. In a airconditioning duct case, various conditions were investigated to design active noise controllers. A case with acoustic feedback, the proposed algorithm showed good performances through computer simulations.

  • Measurement techniques for in-duct acoustic source parameters can be classified into the direct method and the load method, according to whether it utilizes an extra external source or not. It is reported that the load methods yield the negative source resistance and the purpose of this paper is to clarify that the time-varying nature of the source is the main cause of this physically implausible result. For this purpose, the direct and load methods for measuring the source characteristics of a simplified fluid machine are simulated using the time domain numerical analysis. In the numerical simulations, the method of characteristics is employed and the source characteristics are calculated from the resultant data. It is shown that the load method results in negative source resistance for some frequencies, whereas the direct method yields positive values for all frequencies considered. It is found that the result of load method is quite sensitive to the change of cylinder pressure or valve profile in contrast to the direct method.

  • Interaction between the unsteady flow emitted from the blade of the centrifugal fan and the volute tongue region of fan duct is known as the main noise source of the centrifugal fan. In this paper, the relative contributions of the volute tongue region of the centrifugal fan is analyzed to utilize as the foundation data of low noise design. The internal hybrid CAA (Computational Aero-Acoustics) method is used to predict noise radiated from the main noise source. This method is the noise prediction technique using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), Acoustic analogy, and BEM(Boundary Element Method). The relative contributions of the centrifugal fan volute tongue region using the hybrid CAA method show that the region between the cut-off and the scroll has high contribution than the region between the cut-off and the outlet and the hub region of blade has high contribution than the shroud region of blade. These results is utilized as the important data for the development of low noise centrifugal fan.

  • An additional relationship equation is numerically obtained to increase the accuracy of the conventional equation for obtaining the resonant frequency of a resonator. Although the conventional equation is widely used in industry because of its simplicity, it does not provide enough information on the cavity or the neck of the resonator for noise reduction in a duct. Resonator designers have difficulty implementing resonator design owing to the uncertainty in geometry presented by the well-known formula for determining the resonant frequency. To overcome this problem, this work determines an approximate equation using results of numerical calculation. To this end, shape parameters of the neck and cavity of a resonator are defined, and an equation describing the relationship between them is derived by adjusting the peak frequency in the transmission loss curve of a resonator to its resonant frequency. The application and validity of the derived equation are investigated in a numerical simulation and an acoustic experiment, respectively.

  • In this study, we formulate an acoustical topology optimization problem to optimally design a partition layout inside the expansion chamber of a muffler. The lower-limit insertion loss value at a target frequency is constrained, and the partition volume is selected as an object function. In this study, we calculate the insertion loss outside the duct, while to determine the noise-attenuation performance, we use the insertion loss value calculated inside the duct or transmission loss value obtained in a previous study. We employ the finite-element model for acoustical analysis, and we determine the transmission of an incident acoustic wave through each finite element using the functions of design variables that change continuously between "0" and "1." The rigid body elements, which totally reflect incident waves, build up partitions. Finally, we compare optimal topologies that depend on the target frequency and the allowed lower-limit value of insertion loss.
