  • The energy crisis involving depletion of fossil fuel resource is not the sole driving force for developing renewable energy technologies. Another driving force is the ever increasing concerns on the air quality of our planet, associated with the continuous and dramatic increase of the concentration of greenhouse gas (mainly carbon dioxide) emissions. The internal combustion engine is a major source of distributed $CO_2$ emissions caused by combustion of gasoline derived largely from fossil fuel. Another major source of $CO_2$ is the combustion of fossil fuels to produce electricity. New technologies for generating electricity from sources that do not emit $CO_2$, such as water, solar, wind, and nuclear, together with the advent of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) and even all-electric vehicles (EVs), offer the potential of alleviating our present problem. Therefore, the relevant technologies in $LiFePO_4$ as cathode material for Li-ion batteries suitable to the friendly environment are reviewed aim to provide the vital information about the growing field for energies to minimize the potential environmental risks.

A time-dependent propagation of nonlinear magnetosonic waves in the interplanetary space with solar wind

  • A magnetosonic wave is a longitudinal wave propagating perpendicularly to the magnetic fields and involves compression and rarefaction of the plasma. Lee and Kim (2000) investigated the theoretical solution for the evolution of nonlinear magnetosonic waves in the homogeneous space which adopt the approach of simple waves. We confirm the solution using a one-dimensional MHD code with Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) scheme. Then we apply the solution for the solar wind profiles. We examined the properties of nonlinear waves for the various initial perturbations at near the Lagrangian (L1) point. Also we describe waves steepening process while the shock is being formed by assuming different timescales for a driving source.

  • There are three significant noises from the sunroof while driving. Among them, sunroof tilt-up noise has mainly high-frequency characteristics in the side and rear openings of sunroof. Because of complex structures to operate sunroof, significant flow disturbance makes strong turbulent noise. In this study, sunroof tilt-up noise was predicted by using numerical simulation code and the results were compared with experimental data.

  • Natural ventilation is achieved by air exchanges through multiple openings due to natural pressure variations inside and outside the greenhouse. Wind is the primary driving force making natural ventilation systems very difficult to design properly because of variations in wind velocity and direction. The optimization of these systems for acceptable climate control requires a thorough knowledge of the airflow rates and patterns as related to weather conditions and greenhouse structural details.   • The ionic wind formed in a nonuniform electric field has been recognized to have a significant effect on particle collection in an electrostatic precipitator(ESP). Under normal operating conditions the effect of ionic wind is not pronounced. However, as the flow velocity becomes smaller, the ionic wind becomes pronounced and induces secondary flow, which has a significant influence on the flow field and the particle collecting efficiency. In this paper, experiments for investigating the effect of secondary flow on collection efficiencies were carried out by changing the flow velocities in 0.2-0.7m/s and the applied voltages in 9-11kV/cm. The particle size distributions and concentrations are measured by DMA and CNC. To analyze the experimental results, numerical analysis of electric filed in ESP was carried out. It shows that particle collection is influenced by two independent dimensionless numbers, $Re_{ehd}\;and\;Re_{flow}$ not by $N_{ehd}$ alone. When $Re_{flow}$, decreases for constant $Re_{ehd}$, the secondary flow prohibits the particle collection. But when $Re_{ehd}$ increases for constant $Re_{flow}$, it enhances the particle collection by driving the particles into the collection region.

  • It has been demonstrated for the finite-difference ocean circulation model that the problem of uncertain forcing and input data can be tackled with an optimization techniques. The uncertainty problem in interesting flow properties is exploring a finite difference ocean circulation model due to the uncertainty in the driving boundary conditions. The mathematical procedure is based upon optimization method by the conjugate gradient method using the simulated data and a simple barotropic model. An example for the ocean circulation model is discussed in which wind forcing and the steady-state circulation are determined from a simulated stream function.

Practical fatigue/cost assessment of steel overhead sign support structures subjected to wind load

  • Overhead sign support structures number in the tens of thousands throughout the trunk-line roadways in the United States. A recent two-phase study sponsored by the National Cooperative Highway Research Program resulted in the most significant changes to the AASHTO design specifications for sign support structures to date. The driving factor for these substantial changes was fatigue related cracks and some recent failures. This paper presents the method and results of a subsequent study sponsored by the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) to develop a relative performance-based procedure to rank overhead sign support structures around the United States based on a linear combination of their expected fatigue life and an approximate measure of cost. This was accomplished by coupling a random vibrations approach with six degree-of-freedom linear dynamic models for fatigue life estimation. Approximate cost was modeled as the product of the steel weight and a constructability factor. An objective function was developed and used to rank selected steel sign support structures from around the country with the goal of maximizing the objective function. Although a purely relative approach, the ranking procedure was found to be efficient and provided the decision support necessary to MDOT.

Generation mechanisms of coastal low level jets associated with baroclinicity along the Texas Gulf coast (텍사스 연안의에 의한 연안저층 제트의 생성 역학)

  • The driving mechanisms for low level jets(LLJ) and coastal surface maximum winds are studied with observed wind data from June, 1976 through August, 1980 at Port Aransas and Victoria, Texas, in connection with a baroclinic model. This model is developed considering the forcing functions such as the synoptic and meso-scale pressure gradient, the frictional force, and the atmospheric stability. The results show that a LLJis observed on over 95% of the occasions when a nighttime coastal wind maximum occurred. Baroclinicity generated by sloping terrain during the summertime causes the diurnal variation in the thermal field. This thermal wind component would then decrease the prevailing synoptic-scale southerly wind by day and allow it to increase at night. Nighttime atmospheric stability leads to frictional decoupling which enhances the nocturnal LLJ. At the coastal site neutral stability prevails, thus all owing downward transfer of momentum from the nocturnal LLJ and results in the nocturnal coastal surface wind maximum. The height of LLJis not uniquely related to the inversion layer, and the results of the computations using this model show a good agreement with the observations.

The Study on the Controller for Supplying Stably Power with a Stand-Alone Photovoltaic/Wind/Small Generator Hybrid Power Generation System (독립형 태양광, 풍력, 소형발전기 복합시스템에서 안정적인 전력공급을 위한 컨트롤러에 관한 연구)

  • The object of this paper is the controller for supplying stably power in a separate house in which a hybrid electrical storage system with a stand-alone photovoltaic/wind power generation system and a small generator is applied. In the photovoltaic/wind hybrid power system used in the separate house, when only the battery is used in sunless days, the capacity of the battery is become larger. In particular, as in recent days, if cloudy days are frequent due to anomaly climate, it is difficult to estimate the number of sunless days. Accordingly, it is preferable to build the electrical storage system that numbers of sunshineless days are to be controlled and a shortage amount of the power generation capacity is to be handled by a small generator system. In order to supply stably power of new renewable energy such as solar to any separate houses, it is preferable to reduce the capacity of battery by decreasing the number of sunless days when estimating the capacity of battery and to drive the small generator for compensation of the power shortage. Such system needs components including inverters for photovoltaic and wind power generation system, batteries and controllers for automatically driving the small generator, based upon the nature of the stand-alone house, and it is preferable to use the controller having a simpler and higher stability by adopting the all-in-one scheme to facilitate its maintenance.

  • This paper presents the control method of MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) using back-to- back converter. The windturbine system use PMSG(ermanent Magnet Synchronous Generator) system considering low maintenance costs and driving performance at low wind. This paper use the adaptive sliding mode control to the torque control. Proposed method was analyzed mathematically.
