  • A finite element scheme using the concept of PISO method has been developed to solve the viscous flow problems in all speed range. In this study, new pressure equation is proposed such that both the hyperbolic term related with the density variations and elliptic term reflecting the incompressibility constraint are included. Present method has been applied to incompressible flow in two-dimensional driven cavity(Re=100, 400 and 1,000), and its computed results are compared with other's. Also, Carter plate problem(M=3 and Re=1,000) is computed and the comparison is made with Carter's results. Finally, we simulate a shock-boundary layer interaction problem(M=2 and $Re=2.96{\times}10^5$) to illustrate the shock capturing capability of the present solution algorithm.

  • In this paper, the new higher order wall boundary conditions are proposed for solving the incompressible flows. The square driven cavity flows are simulated by using the variable order method of lines with the present wall boundary conditions. The variable order method of lines is constructed by the spatial discretization, i.e., the variable order proper convective scheme for convective terms and the modified differential quadrature method for diffusive terms, and time integration. The 2nd, 4th, and 6th order solutions are presented and these results show this higher order boundary conditions are very promising for the incompressible flow simulations.

  • This paper is a continuation of the recent development on the hermite-based divergence free basis function and deals with a non-isothermal fluid flow thru the buoyancy driven flow in a square cavity with temperature difference across the two sides. The basis functions for the velocities consist of the hermite function and its curl. However, the basis for the temperature are the hermite function and its gradienst. Hence, the number of degrees of freedom at a node becomes 6, which are the stream function, two velocities, the temperature and its x- and y-derivatives. Numerical results for the streamlines, the temperatures, the x-velocities and the y-velocities show good agreements with those of De vahl Davis[7].

  • To investigate the combustion characteristics in a low-pollutant municipal waste incinerator, the generalized multi-block simulation code that can be applied to turbulent reacting flow with gaseous hydrocarbon fuel in a 3D complex geometry has been developed with nongray radiation effects. To deal with the complex geometry, structured multi-block method and the scheme which treats interfaces implicitly are adopted. The developed code is validated through various engineering problems such as curved duct flow, driven cavity flow, gray multi-block radiation, nongray radiation. and combustion in a incinerator.

  • The main objective of the research is to develop a research code solving transient incompressible Navier-Stokes equation. In this research code, Adams-Bashforth method was applied to the convective terms of the navier stokes equation and the splitted equations were discretized spatially by finite element methods to solve the complex geometry problems easily. To reduce the divergence on the boundaries of pressure poisson equation due to the unsuitable pressure boundary conditions, multi step approximation pressure boundary conditions derived from the boundary linear momentum equations were used. Simulations of Lid Driven Flow and Flow over Cylinder were conducted to prove the accuracy by means of the comparison with results of the previous workers.

  • The study is concerned with the theoretical and experimental investigation of axisymmetric fluid pressure-drive hydronforming of sheet metal by forming over the die cavity. The rigid-plastic finite element method is employed to calculate the stress and strain distribution The effect of blank size and die radius is also studied in the finite element analysis. Experiments are carried out for hydroforming of cold rolled steel sheets under various process conditions. The computational results are compared with the experimental results for the forming pressure vs. pole displacement relations and strain distributions. Comparison has shown that theoretical predictions by the finite element method are in good agreement with the experimental observations. Thus, it is shown that the rigid-plastic finite element method is effectively used in the analysis of axisymmetric fluid pressure-driven hydroforming process.

  • Preconditioned compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved for almost incompressible flows. Unstructured meshes are utilized for spatial discretization of complex flow domain. Effectiveness of the current preconditioning algorithm, with respect to various Reynolds numbers and Mach numbers, is demonstrated by the solution of canonical problems for incompressible flows, e.g. driven cavity flows.

  • Development of die technology for holder and barrel dies is necessary according to minimization of lens assembly, image sensor, and connectors. In these cases, there are two technical problems arising from die design. One is determination of knock-out pin location in die set. Minimization of lens assembly size make it difficult to obtain ejecting space. The other is whether or not high-precision die technology is possible to reduce torque variation when holer and barrel products is assembled. In this study, multi-cavity die set was developed taking advantage of gear-driven ejecting method. In the developed technology, die manufacturing technology was guaranteed with a high-precision level.

  • Time marching algorithms applied to compressible Navier-Stokes equation have a convergence problem at low Mach number. It is mainly due to the eigenvalue stiffness and pressure singularity as Mach number approaches to zero. Among the several methods to overcome the shortcomings of time marching scheme, time derivative preconditioning method have been used successfully. In this numerical analysis, we adopted a preconditioner of K.H. Chen and developed a two-dimensional, axisymmetric Navier-Stokes program. The steady state driven cavity flow and backward facing step flow problems were computed to confirm the accuracy and the robustness of preconditioned algorithm for low Mach number flows. And the transonic and supersonic flows insice the JPL axisymmetric nozzle internal flow is exampled to investigate the effects of preconditioning at high Mach number flow regime. Test results showed excellent agreement with the experimental data.

  • Objective of the present study is to examine the convergence characteristics of the various multi-stage Runge-Kutta methods in solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations of a time-marching from casted by the artificial compressibility method. Convergence characteristics are examined over 2-stage, 4-stage and hybrid type (using 4-, 3-, 2-stages sequentially) Runge-Kutta methods for a laminar lid-driven cavity flow, and also for a turbulent bump channel flow using Chien's low-Reynolds number turbulence model. Efforts are made to establish a stable and fast convergent multi-stage Runge-Kutta method with minimal artificial dissipations.
