  • An air-core vortex is generated during draining after stirring a rotating cylindrical tank or after filling it with water. The formation of the air-core vortex and the time of its formation are dependent on drain conditions such as the dimensions of the tank, the initial rotation or stirring speed, and the shape of the drain port. In this study, a draining process using a two-stage drain port was numerically investigated. The length and radius of the first drain stage located in the lower part of the drain port were kept constant, whereas the radius of the second drain stage was varied for simulating the draining process. The simulation was conducted by considering an axisymmetric swirling flow for all cases. The declining water level was monitored by an interface capturing method. Further, the effects of the radius of the second drain stage on the time of formation of the air-core vortex and the internal flow structure were investigated.

  • We studied about the manufacture of the drain-source contacts for OTFTs(organic thin-film transistors) by using screen printing method. The conductive fillers used Ag and carbon black. The conductive contacts with $100{\mu}m$ of channel length were screen printed on a silicon dioxide gate dielectric layer and, the pentacene semiconductor was deposited via vacuum deposition. As a result of studying various conductive pastes, we could obtain the OTFTs which exhibited field-effect behavior over arrange of drain-source and gate voltages, similar to devices employing deposited Au contacts. By using screen-printing with conductive paste, the contacts are processed at low temperature, thereby facilitating their integration with heat sensitive substrates.

  • Compressed air has many uses on board ship, ranging from diesel engine starting to the cleaning of machinery during maintenance. In an effort to enhance the performance of the marine compressed air system, this work studied a way to reduce condensation from the air compressor via experiments. Especially more condensation is produced when the temperature at compressor outlets and the humidity of the air are higher. so in the research, drain production change has been observed by additionally installing the cooling fan on the suction portion of the air to air compressor and this is the method for reducing the compressed air drain that has passed through the compressor. For the result, it was verified that when the cooling fan was used, less drain was made where per hour it was 500.9ml of drain and the measured result after installing the cooling fan was that less drain was made. Other additional and various researches are needed including experiments like silica gel passing through the suction portion afterwards.

  • Background: A method of wound closure using knotless suture material in the chest tube site has been introduced at our center, and is now widely used as the primary method of closing chest tube wounds in video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) because it provides cosmetic benefits and causes less pain. Methods: We included 109 patients who underwent VATS pulmonary resection at Samsung Medical Center from October 1 to October 31, 2016. Eighty-five patients underwent VATS pulmonary resection with chest drain wound closure utilizing knotless suture material, and 24 patients underwent VATS pulmonary resection with chest drain wound closure by the conventional method. Complications related to the chest drain wound were compared between the 2 groups. Results: There were 2 cases of pneumothorax after chest tube removal in both groups (8.3% in the conventional group, 2.3% in the knotless suture group; p=0.172) and there was 1 case of wound discharge due to wound dehiscence in the knotless suture group (0% in the conventional group, 1.2% in the knotless suture group; p=0.453). There was no reported case of chest tube dislodgement in either group. The complication rates were non-significantly different between the 2 groups. Conclusion: The results for the complication rates of this new chest drain wound closure method suggest that this method is not inferior to the conventional method. Chest drain wound closure using knotless suture material is feasible based on the short-term results of the complication rate.

  • A horizontal drain method, which applies vacuum pressure at the end of a horizontal drain for discharging pore water, is used often for improving surface reclaimed clay in the field. In this study, to examine the effectiveness of improving consolidation or shear strength depends by varying vacuum pressure, laboratory chamber horizontal drain test using vacuum pressure is performed and the results is compared with that of self-weight consolidation. The results show that water content reduces with the increase of soil depth in case of self-weight consolidation, while it reduces near the horizontal drain and increases with the increase of the distance from the horizontal drain in case of applying vacuum pressure. The shear strength of dredged soil was improved as well, when the vacuum pressure is applied. The optimized consolidation was achieved at the vacuum pressure range of 30 to 50kPa in the laboratory box test of 50cm wide, considering the range of drain interval in the field was between 0.7 and 1.2m.

  • In this study, a series of column test as a way in order to make up for the weakness point of the conventional acceleration method were conducted to both propose the suction board drain method and grapes the specific improvement character of this method as a result of a sort of plastic drain board and a phase of vacuum pressure conditions. On this occasion, the study focused on computing the effective factors of the fittest Suction board drain method affected by each condition through confirming the settlement generated during the test, the water content reduction and stress increase effect occurred arising from the test, and the ratio of consolidation related to the improvement period. In accordance with the shape of core and that whether the core is attached to the filter(pocket or adhesion), the castle type of adhesion and the column type of pocket are more efficient than the others as a consequence of the test to find out the improvement effect depending on each drainage such as a castle type, coil type, harmonica type, column type of pocket and a castle of the adhesion. In case of the step suction pressure, the shorter the period of $-0.8\;kg/cm^2$ as a final step of the suction pressure is, the better the improvement is. In addition, the correlation between degree of consolidation per each suction pressure level and duration of application was drawn as a curve and the point of inflection on this curve was provided to determine the duration period to maximize the consolidation.

  • Horizontal drains are sometimes installed on the ground together with vertical drains in order to drain excess pore water. Taking into account the discharge capacity of horizontal drains, a new analytical method is developed in this paper, and then a new formula for the discharge capacity of horizontal drains is proposed. It is known from the analysis that the effect of the rate of surcharge loading is negligible in determining horizontal discharge capacity. This formula is described as the function of coefficient of consolidation, space of vertical drain, compression index, length of horizontal drains, and thickness of the compressible layer.

  • We propose a simple method to control the crystallization depth of amorphous silicon (a-Si) deposited by PECVD or LPCVD during the excimer laser annealing (ELA). Employing the new method, we have formed poly-Si/a-Si double film and fabricated a new poly-Si TFT with vertical a-Si offsets between the poly-Si channel and the source/drain of TFT without any additional photo-lithography process. The maximum leakage current of the new poly-Si TFT decreased about 80% due to the highly resistive vertical a-Si offsets which reduce the peak electric field in drain depletion region and suppress electron-hole pair generation. In ON state, current flows spreading down through broad a-Si cross-section in the vertical a-Si offsets and the current density in the drain depletion region where large electric field is applied is reduced. The stability of poly-Si TFT has been improved noticeably by suppressing trap state generation in drain region which is caused by high current density and large electric field. For example, ON current of the new TFT decreased only 7% at a stress condition where ON current of conventional TFT decreased 89%.
