  • Suction Drain Method is soft ground improvement technique, in which a vacuum pressure can be directly applied to the Vertical Drain Board to promote consolidation and strengthening the soft ground. This method does not require a surcharge load, different to embankment or Preloading Method. In this study, ground improvement efficiency of suction drain method was estimated when duplex loading pressure with vacuum and pressure. During suction drain method process, surface settlement and pore pressure were monitored, and cone resistance test as well as water content were also measured after the completion of Suction Drain Method treatment.

  • Soil properties, drain conditions and numerical analysis technique have great influence upon consolidation behavior. In relevant to the above described fact, this paper aims to examining the applicability of prediction model of consolidation as well as deformation characteristics for soft clayey foundation improved by sand drain. A case study for actual foundation of Kwangyang steel works was performed. Single drain consolidation model proposed by Hansbo and Biot's consolidation theory coupled with modified Cam-clay model developed during the research were employed for the FEM numerical analysis of the foundation. Both smear effect and drain capacity were taken into account for the analysis. Finally the applicability of the newly developed technique to the behavior of foundation composed of soft clay proved satisfactory.

  • Sediments deposited on lateral drain pipes in a tunnel make lateral porous pipes clogged. Since the safety of the tunnel can be affected by this phenomenon, it requires a regular maintenance of the lateral drain pipes. In this study, a series of centrifugal tests were conducted in order to find out the method which can reduce the clogging effect considerably. Four different types of tunnel drain configurations were selected in the experiments. By analysis of sediments for each configuration, the optimum drain configuration that can minimize sedimentation of cement constituents was investigated. As a results, the existing drain configuration which uses filter concrete appear to produce much sediments. In contrast, the new drain configuration appears to be able to reduce sedimentation ratio up to almost 50% comparing with the existing one. From these observations, it may be concluded that the new drain configuration, in which the lateral porous pipes of a tunnel are surrounded by gravel layer and non-woven geotextile, has high efficiency in maintenance.

  • Introduction : No drain technique during parotidectomy had been introduced to reduce postoperative morbidity and to minimize hospital stay in a few previous publications. Since the authors have applied this technique in select patients for several years, we wanted to evaluate the feasibility and usefulness of no drain parotidectomy. Material & Methods : We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 96 patients who underwent superficial or total parotidectomy by one surgeon from May 2005 to July 2012. The decision on drain insertion was made by the operator at the end of the surgery. The patients were categorized as drain insertion group and no drain group. Results : The patients who have smaller tumors and benign lesions were more frequently chosen into no drain group. Hospital stay was shorter in no drain group than in drain insertion group. Although no drain group showed increased number of acute complications such as seroma and hematoma, the complications were mild and could be controlled easily at the outpatient clinic. Conclusion : No drain technique during parotidectomy could be done relatively safely in select patients and it could reduce hospital stay.

  • A novel self-aligned ESD (Elevated Source Drain) MOSFET structure which can effectively reduce the GIDL (Gate-Induced Drain Leakage) current is proposed and analyzed. The proposed ESD structure is characterized by sidewall spacer and recessed-channel depth which are determined by dry-etching process. Elevation of the Source/Drain extension region is realized so that the low-activation effect caused by low-energy ion implantation can be avoided. Unlike the conventional LDD structures, it is shown that the GIDL current of the ESD structure is suppressed without sacrificing the maximum driving capability. The main reason for the reduction of GIDL current Is the decreased electric field at the point of the maximum band-to-band tunneling as the peak electric field is shifted toward the drain side.

  • Sand drain as a vertical drainage is widely used in soft ground improvement. Recently, sand, the principal source of sand drain, is running out. The in-situ tests were carried out to utilize gravel as a substitute for sand. In-situ tests area was divided into two areas by material used. One is Sand Drain(SD) and Sand Compaction Pile(SCP) area, the other is Gravel Drain(GD) and Gravel Compaction Pile(GCP) area. Both areas were monitored to obtain the information on settlement, pore water pressure and bearing capacity by measuring instruments for stage loading caused by embankment. The results of measurements were analyzed, The clogging effect was checked at various depth in gravel column after the test. According to the test results, the settlement was found to be smaller in gravel drain than in sand drain. The increase in bearing capacity by gravel pile explains the result. The clogging effect was not found in gravel column. It is assumed that gravel is relatively acceptable as a drainage material. Gravel is considered to be a better material than sand for bearing capacity, and it is found that bearing capacity is larger when gravel is used as a gravel compaction pile than as a gravel drain.

  • A CMOS device which has an extended heavily-doped amorphous silicon source/drain layer on the field oxide and an amorphous silicon local interconnection (ASLI) layer in the self-aligned source/drain region has been studied. The ASLI layer has some important roles of the local interconnections from the extended source/drain to the bulk source/drain and the path of the dopant diffusion sources to the bulk. The junction depth and the area of the source/drain can be controlled easily by the ASLI layer thickness. The device in this paper not only has very small area of source/drain junctions, but has very shallow junction depths than those of the conventional CMOS device. An operating speed, however, is enhanced significantly compared with the conventional ones, because the junction capacitance of the source/drain is reduced remarkably due to the very small area of source/drain junctions. For a 71-stage unloaded CMOS ring oscillator, 128 ps/gate has been obtained at power supply voltage of 3.3V. Utilizing this proposed structure, a buried channel PMOS device for the deep submicron regime, known to be difficult to implement, can be fabricated easily.

  • The recent environmental protection issue has diminished the supply of sand for soft ground improvements so much that the prices of sand have shown a sudden rise. Plastic material is one of substitutes for sand material, but plastic is nonperishable and doubtable if it has potential environmental hormone disrupting substances. Moderate-priced natural fiber drain board made with coconut coir and jute filter are in the spotlight recently as an alternative material for sand and plastic drain board etc. Natural fiber drain has not only competitive price but also a characteristic of assimilation into the soils after finishing of its own function. Discharge capacity of the fiber drain board evaluated by triaxial type discharge capacity test was relatively lower than that of plastic drain board. Nevertheless, settlement and pore pressure dissipation behaviors of the fiber drain board and the plastic drain board which were installed in the clayey soil during the composite discharge capacity test were almost similar. It was also found that biodegradation of the fiber drain board was in progress until 18 month after installation in the clayey soil, but they had still enough engineering properties to use at field.

  • An analytical solution method is presented to determine the radius of influence circle of a sand 4rain well(i.e., spacing between the sand drain wells) required in the design under various types of construction loading. The proposed method deals with a sand drain well having a smeared zone at the periphery of the drain well as well as flow resistance in the drain well. The method proposed in the present study is made based on the modification of 01son's solution which deals with a single ramp loading without considering smeard zone effect as well as flow resistance in the drain well. Further, the effects of various design paramenters on the drain spacing are analyzed using the proposed method.
