In this work we show the results of our most recent Direct Numerical Simulations (DNS) of turbulent viscoelastic channel flow using spectral spatial approximations and a stabilizing artificial diffusion in the viscoelastic constitutive model. The Finite-Elasticity Non-Linear Elastic Dumbbell model with the Peterlin approximation (FENE-P) is used to represent the effect of polymer molecules in solution, The corresponding rheological parameters are chosen so that to get closer to the conditions corresponding to maximum drag reduction: A high extensibility parameter (60) and a moderate solvent viscosity ratio (0.8) are used with two different friction Weissenberg numbers (50 and 100). We then first find that the corresponding achieved drag reduction, in the range of friction Reynolds numbers used in this work (180-590), is insensitive to the Reynolds number (in accordance to previous work). The obtained drag reduction is at the level of $49\%\;and\;63\%$, for the friction Weissenberg numbers 50 and 100, respectively. The largest value is substantially higher than any of our previous simulations, performed at more moderate levels of viscoelasticity (i.e. higher viscosity ratio and smaller extensibility parameter values). Therefore, the maximum extensional viscosity exhibited by the modeled system and the friction Weissenberg number can still be considered as the dominant factors determining the levels of drag reduction. These can reach high values, even for of dilute polymer solution (the system modeled by the FENE-P model), provided the flow viscoelasticity is high, corresponding to a high polymer molecular weight (which translates to a high extensibility parameter) and a high friction Weissenberg number. Based on that and the changes observed in the turbulent structure and in the most prevalent statistics, as presented in this work, we can still rationalize for an increasing extensional resistance-based drag reduction mechanism as the most prevalent mechanism for drag reduction, the same one evidenced in our previous work: As the polymer elasticity increases, so does the resistance offered to extensional deformation. That, in turn, changes the structure of the most energy-containing turbulent eddies (they become wider, more well correlated, and weaker in intensity) so that they become less efficient in transferring momentum, thus leading to drag reduction. Such a continuum, rheology-based, mechanism has first been proposed in the early 70s independently by Metzner and Lamley and is to be contrasted against any molecularly based explanations.
A specially designed flat plate was mounted vertically over the axial line in the wind tunnel of the Pusan National University. Strain balances were mounted in the trailing part of the plate to measure the skin friction drag over removable insertions of $0.55{\times}0.25m^2$ size. A set of the insertions was designed and manufactured: 3 mm thick polished metal surface and three compliant surfaces. The compliant surfaces were manufactured of a silicone rubber Silastic$^{(R)}$ S2 (Dow Corning company). To modify the viscoelastic properties of the rubber, its composition was varied: 90% rubber + 10% catalyst (standard), 92.5% + 7.5% (weak), 85% + 15% (strong). Modulus of elasticity and the loss factor were measured accurately for these materials in the frequency range from 40 Hz to 3 kHz. The aging of the materials (variation of their properties) for the period of one year was documented as well. Along with the drag measurement using the strain balance, velocity and pressure were measured for different coating. The strong compliant coating achieved 5% drag reduction within a velocity range $20{\sim}40$ m/s while standard and weak coatings increased drag reduction.
The flow around a circular cylinder was controlled by attaching O-rings to reduce drag force acting on the cylinder. Four experimental models were tested in this study; one smooth cylinder of diameter D (D=60mm) and three cylinders fitted with O-rings of diameters d=0.0167D, 0.05D and 0.067D with pitches of PPD=1D, 0.5D and 0.25D. The drag force, mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles in the near wake behind the cylinders were measured for Reynolds numbers based on the cylinder diameter in the range of $Re_D=7.8{\times}10^3{\sim}1.2{\times}10^5$. At $Re_D=1.2{\times}10^5$, the cylinder fitted with O-rings of d=0.0167D in a pitch interval of 0.25D shows the maximum drag reduction of about 5.4%, compared with the smooth cylinder. The drag reduction effect of O-rings of d=0.067D is not so high. For O-ring circulars, as the Reynolds number increases, the peak location of turbulence intensity shifts downstream and the peak magnitude is decreased. Flow field around the cylinders was visualized using a smoke-wire technique to see the flow structure qualitatively. The size of vortices and vortex formation region formed behind the O-ring cylinders are smaller, compared with the smooth cylinder.
In order to examine the possibility of using a cavity as a passive device for reduction of skin friction and heat transfer, an intensive parametric study over a broad range of the cavity depth and length at different Reynolds numbers is performed for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers in the present study. Direct and large eddy simulation techniques are used for turbulent boundary layers at low and moderate Reynolds numbers, respectively. for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers over a cavity, a flow oscillation occurs due to the shear layer instability when the cavity depth and length are sufficiently large and it plays an important role in the determination of drag and heat-transfer increase or decrease. For a cavity sufficiently small to suppress the flow oscillation, both the total drag and heat transfer are reduced. Therefore, the applicability of a cavity as a passive device for reduction of drag and heat transfer is fully confirmed in the present study. Scaling based on the wall shear rate of the incoming boundary layer is also proposed and it is found to be valid in steady flow over a cavity.
There have been many attempts to reduce the cost of transportation. Especially, drag reduction of heavy vehicles has enormous influence on energy saving by reducing the driving power of the vehicles. In this study, the effects of drag-reducing additive devices such as side skirt, boat tail and cab-roof fairing on the drag reduction of a 5 ton truck model were experimentally investigated. The aerodynamic performance of these flow-control devices attached to heavy vehicle was evaluated through wind tunnel test. In addition, flow patterns around the truck model were visualized by using smoke tube method. The drag coefficient is reduced by up to 5.7%, 7.16% and 22.2% by the side skirt, boat tail and cab-roof fairing, respectively. The interactive effect of the side skirt and boat tail was also investigated.

The Characteristics of the drag reduction of a square prism having a detached splitter plate at the wake side was investigated by measuring of fluid force on the square prism and by visualization of the field using PIV. The experimental parameters were the width ratios(H/B=0.5~1.5) of splitters to the prism width and the gap ratios (G/B=0~2) between the prism and the splitter plate. The drag reduction rate was increased with H/B, and was increased and decreased with G/B. The maximum drag reduction rate was represented by 24.2% at H/B=1.5 and G/B=0.5. The two vortices were generated by the splitter plate at the wake region of the prism. The direction of the vortex was clockwise at the upside of the splitter plate and counterclockwise at the downside.
As a part of studies of drag reduction phenomenon, at the entrance flow region of abrupt contraction tube flowing water, dilute and concentrated drag reducing polymer solutions contraction losses are estimated experimentally. Futher more, entrance lengths are considered theoretically and are measured experimentally. In the present experiment, fluid temperature is fixed l$0^{\circ}C$ and flow rates are 3,000
The maximum speed of high-speed rail is restricted to various factors such as track condition including slope and radius, tunnel and dynamic stability of vehicle. Among the various factors, traction effort and resistance to motion is principal and basic factor. In addition, at high speed over 300km/h, aerodynamic drag amounts up to 80% of resistance to motion, that it can be said that aerodynamic drag is the most important factor to decide the maximum speed of high-speed rail system. This paper deals with a measure to increase the maximum speed of high-speed train by reducing aerodynamic drag. The traction effort curve and resistance to motion curve of existing high-speed train under development has been employed to set up the target of aerodynamic drag reduction to reach up to 500km/h without modification traction system. In addition, the contribution of various sources of aerodynamic drag to total value has been analyzed and the strategy for implementation of aerodynamic drag reduction has been discussed based on the aerodynamic simulation results around the train using computational fluid dynamics.
A 2D-LDV system was employed to investigate the flow field characteristics in fully developed drag reducing turbulent channel flows. The additive used in this study was Habon-G which showed splendid drag reduction effect and minimum mechanical degradation trend in the closed flow circulation loop. In order to have better understanding of the drag reduction mechanism, the instantaneous velocities were carefully measured under various experimental conditions and the flow characteristics including time-averaged velocity, turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stresses were carefully assessed. The time-averaged velocity profiles of surfactant flows showed more parabolic shape(typically shown in a laminar flow) together with significant suppression of turbulent production, yielding the shear induced micelle structure orienting in the flow direction due to its isotropic characteristics. Especially it was observed that the maximum intensity for drag reducing flows was shifted away from the wall and that the streamwise and normal turbulent intensities were strongly altered. This phenomenon strongly suggests that the viscous sublayer becomes thicker with addition of surfactant. Turbulent momentum transport was drastically suppressed across the whole drag reducing channel flow.
