  • A new device structure has been developed for p-i-n switches. In this structure, the phosphorus-diffused n$^{+}$ layter adjacent to the boron-doped anode is used to short the p$^{+}$ anode-channel(i-region). This change in the anode electrode structure results in a significant improvement in the threshold voltage-to-holding voltage($V_{Th}/V_{h}$) ratio, which is due to the suppression of the hold injection from the anode by the n$^{+}$ layer. The shorted anode p-i-n devices of a 100 .mu.m channel length show an extremely high threshold voltage in the 250~300 V range and a low holding voltage in the 5~9 V range. These features of the device are expected to acdelerate their practical application to power switching circuits.

  • Frequency is an important operating parameter of a power system. Electric power systems sustain transient frequency swings whenever the balance between generation and load does not no longer hold. To cope with this constraints, it requires an accurate and high speedy frequency deviation estimation technique and suitable adjustment to obtain the Power system energy balance. This paper describes a digital signal processing technique for measuring the operating frequency of a power system. The fundamental frequency component of 3-phase signal is first extracted by using an algorithm based on FIR filter. The rate change of the phase angle is used for estimation. To confirm the validity of the proposed algorithm, the simulation studies carried out on a typical 154KV double T/L system by using EMTP software. Some test results are presented in the paper.

  • This work describes an 8b 200MHz time-interleaved subranging analog-to-digital converter (ADC) based on a single-poly digital CMOS process. Two fine ADCs for lower digital bits of the proposed ADC employ a time-sharing double-channel architecture to increase system speed and a new reference voltage switching scheme to reduce settling time of the reference voltages and chip area. The proposed intermeshed resistor string, which generates reference voltages for fine ADCs, improves linearity and settling time of the reference voltages simultaneously. The proposed sample- and-hold amplifier(SHA) is based on a highly linear common-drain amplifier and passive differential circuits to minimize power consumption and chip area with 8b accuracy and employs input dynamic common mode feedback circuits for high dynamic performance at a 200MHz sampling rate. A new encoding circuit in a coarse ADC simplifies the signal processing between the coarse ADC and two successive fine ADCs.

  • Few studies address the use of manual muscle stretching to improve spinal active range of motion(AROM). There is evidence that' Hold-Relax'(HR) is effective for increasing ROM in the extremities, which leads the researchers to anticipate similar benefits in the spine. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of HR(trunk flexors) and active thoracic flexion and extension on thoracic mobility, specifically flexion and extension in healthy individuals. A convenience sample of 30 physical therapy students(22-38 years) were randomly assigned to intervention sequence 'A-B' or 'B-A', with at least 7 days between interventions. Intervention' A' consisted of HR of the ventral trunk musculature while 'B' consisted of thoracic flexion-extension AROM. Thoracic flexion and extension AROM were measured before and after each intervention using the double inclinometer method. Paired t-tests were used to compare AROM pre and post-intervention for both groups, and to test for carry-over and learning effects. There was a statistically significant increase(mean=$3^{\circ}$ ; p=0.006) in thoracic extension following HR of the trunk flexors. There were no significant changes in thoracic flexion following HR, or in flexion or extension following the AROM intervention. No carryover or learning effects were identified. HR may be an effective tool for improving AROM in the thoracic spine in pain free individuals. Further investigation is warranted with symptomatic populations and to define the minimal clinical difference(MCD) for thoracic spine mobility.

  • The membrane-type Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) cargo tank is equipped with a double barrier to seal the LNG, of which the secondary barrier serves to prevent LNG leakage and mainly uses fiber-reinforced composite materials. However, the composite materials have thermal expansion anisotropy, which deteriorates shape distortion and mechanical performance due to repeated thermal loads caused by temperature changes between cryogenic and ambient during the unloading of LNG. Therefore, in this study, the longitudinal thermal expansion characteristics of the composite materials were obtained using a vertical thermo-mechanical analyzer, and the elastic modulus was obtained through the tensile test for each temperature to perform thermal load analysis for each direction. This is considered that it is useful to secure reliability from the viewpoint of the design of materials for a LNG cargo hold.

  • Two types of aerodynamic admittance function (AAF) that have been adopted in bridge aerodynamics are addressed. The first type is based on a group of supposed relations between flutter derivatives and AAFs. In so doing, the aero-elastic properties of a section could be used to determine AAFs. It is found that the supposed relations hold only for cases when the gust frequencies are within a very low range. Predominant frequencies of long-span bridges are, however, far away from this range. In this sense, the AAFs determined this way are of little practical significance. Another type of AAFs is based on the relation between the Theodorsen circulation function and the Sears function, which holds for thin airfoil theories. It is found, however, that an obvious illogicality exists in this methodology either. In this article, a viewpoint is put forward that AAFs of bluff bridge deck sections are inherently dependent on oncoming turbulent properties. This kind of dependence is investigated with a thin plate and a double-girder bluff section via computational fluid dynamics method. Two types of wind fluctuations are used for identification of AAFs. One is turbulent wind flow while the other is harmonic. The numerical results indicate that AAFs of the thin plate agree well with the Sears AAF, and show no obvious dependence on the oncoming wind fields. In contrast, for the case of bluff double-girder section, AAFs identified from the turbulent and harmonic flows of different amplitudes differ among each other, exhibiting obvious dependence on the oncoming wind field properties.

  • In Jane Campion's Stewart, Ada's husband, as like modern people, manifests the infinite lust of conquest. But Banes has a humanistic relation with the New Zealand's tribe and doesn't have a deep attachment of his own land. Stewart represents the ruling reason in that he disregards his wife's desire and acts only for his desire to possess and conquest. In contrast with him, in order to satisfy her desire of the piano and hold her own inner world in common, Banes proposes the extraordinary deal, that is to say, to exchange her piano and his land and to learn playing the piano from her. Like this Banes represents the caring reason in that he regards Ada's desire and cares her in according to her purpose and himself.

  • 24 wooden objects excavated from Daho-ri were identified into 8 categories such as Quercus spp. (37.7%), Castanea crenata (8.3%), Prunus (8.3%), Ilex (4.1%), Alnus spp. (25%), Prunus spp. (4.1%), Zelkova serrata (4.1%) and Fraxinuse (8.3%). Physical properties of the above high water content, high contraction rate and significant density reduction. As for degradation pattern, observation with polarizing microscope showed significant decrease of double reflection phenomenon in most of the excavated objects excluding vessel compared to other kinds of objects, and observation with SEM showed remarkable degradation of organization structure including the 2nd cell wall of wood. Reagent can be easily penetrated and diffused into the objects with high degradation rate, so it's beneficial to treat them with polymers such as PEG#4000(MW:3,350), but in order to prevent contraction and change in shape, high concentration of Reagent is required in treatment to hold wood organization structure.

  • Measurement of magnetic signals generated from electric activity of myocardium provides useful information for the functional diagnosis of heart diseases. Key technical component of the magnetocardiography (MCG) technology is SQUID. To measure MCG signals with high signal-to-noise ratio, sensitive SQUID magnetic field sensors are needed. Present magnetic field sensors based on Nb SQUIDs have field sensitivity good enough to measure most of MCG signals. However, for accurate measurement of fine signal pattern or detection of local atrial fibrillation signals, we may need higher field sensitivity. In addition to field sensitivity, economic aspect of the SQUID system is also important. To simplify the SQUID readout electronics, the output voltage or flux-to-voltage transfer of SQUID should be large enough so that direct measurement of SQUID output can be done using room-temperature preamplifiers. Double relaxation oscillation SQUID (DROS), having about 10 times larger flux-to-voltage transfers than those of DC-SQUIDs, was shown to be a good choice to make the electronics compact. For effective cancellation of external noise inside a thin economic shielded room, first-order axial gradiometer with high balance, simple structure and long-baseline is needed. We developed a technology to make the axial gradiometer compact using direct bonding of superconductive wires between pickup coil and input coil. Conventional insert has mechanical support to hold the gradiometer array, and the dewar neck has equal diameter with the dewar bottom. Boiling of the liquid He can generate mechanical vibrations in the gradiometer array due to mechanical connection structure. Elimination of the mechanical support, and direct mounting of the gradiometer array into the dewar bottom can reduce the dewar neck diameter, resulting in the reduction of liquid He consumption.
