In this study, laboratory experiments are conducted to investigate flow-fields around floating breakwaters by using the LDV(Laser Doppler Velocimetry) system. The LDV system is a well-known equipment to measure fluid particle velocities in laboratory experiments. Although the system requires great efforts and enormous time for measurements, it can provide precise velocity fields comparing to other available equipments. Various types of drafts and shapes for breakwaters are employed in laboratory experiments to analyze a relation between flow-fields and vorticity. A series of numerical experiments are also carried out by using a two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations model. Numerically predicted results are compared with laboratory measurements.

An experimental study of the air flow through inlet pipe of reciprocating two-cycle engine was investigated under motored condition. Measurements of the two components of velocity, velocity fluctuation, and the other behavior of inlet flow have been obtained by laser Doppler anemometer system. The research engine comprised the cylinder head of a two-cycle engine which mounted on optical spacer with measuring window and glass inlet entry for laser anemometer measurement. A dual beam laser Doppler anemometer was used with conventional forward scattered method and comprised argon-ion laser, frequency shifter with Bragg cell module, and the signal processor. Measurements of mean velocity fluctuation of inlet flow for different engine speeds, measuring positions, and the changes in cylinder volume are investigated. The results presented show that the changes in engine speed is shown to be strongly influenced on the mean velocity of inlet air. The effect of measuring position and cylinder volume on the inlet velocity was also investigated for the inlet port entry and is shown to be small compared to the engine speed.

Owing to the difficulties associated with conducting millimeter-wave (mmWave) field measurements, especially in high-speed train (HST) environments, most propagation channels for mmWave HST have been studied using methods based on simulation rather than measurement. In this study, considering a linear cell layout in which base stations are installed along a railway, measurements were performed at 28 GHz with a speed up to 170 km/h in two prevalent HST scenarios: viaduct and tunnel scenarios. By observing the channel impulse responses, we could identify single- and double-bounced multipath components (MPCs) caused by railway static structures such as overhead line equipment. These MPCs affect the delay spread and Doppler characteristics significantly. Moreover, we observed distinct path loss behaviors for the two scenarios, although both are considered line-of-sight (LoS) scenarios. In the tunnel scenario, the path loss exponent (PLE) is 1.3 owing to the waveguide effect, which indicates that the path loss is almost constant with respect to distance. However, the LoS PLE in the viaduct scenario is 2.46, which is slightly higher than the free-space loss.

This paper presents a pulse radar system to detect drones based on a target fluctuation model, specifically the Swerling target model. Because drones are small atypical objects and are mainly composed of non-conducting materials, their radar cross-section value is low and fluctuating. Therefore, determining the target fluctuation model and applying a proper integration method are important. The proposed system is herein experimentally verified and the results are discussed. A prototype design of the pulse radar system is based on radar equations. It adopts three different pulse modes and a coherent pulse integration to ensure a high signal-to-noise ratio. Outdoor measurements are performed with a prototype radar system to detect Doppler frequencies from both the drone frame and blades. The results indicate that the drone frame and blades are detected within an instrumental maximum range. Additionally, the results show that the drone's frame and blades are close to the Swerling 3 and 4 target models, respectively. By the analysis of the Swerling target models, proper integration methods for detecting drones are verified and can thus contribute to increasing in detectability.
The laser Doppler technique is well-established as a velocity measurement technique of high precision for flow velocity. Recently, the laser Doppler technique has also been used to measure acceleration of fluid particles. Acceleration is interesting from a fluid mechanics point of view, since the Navier Stokes equations, specifically the left-hand-side, are formulated in terms of fluid acceleration. Further, there are several avenues to estimating the dissipation rate using the acceleration. However such measurements place additional demands on the design of the optical system; in particular fringe non-uniformity must be held below about 0.0001 to avoid systematic errors. Relations expressing fringe divergence as a function of the optical parameters of the system have been given in the literature; however, direct use of these formulae to minimize fringe divergence lead either to very large measurement volumes or to extremely high intersection angles. This dilemma can be resolved by using an off-axis receiving arrangement, in which the measurement volume is truncated by a pinhole in front of the detection plane. In the present study an optical design study is performed for optimizing laser Doppler systems for fluid acceleration measurements. This is followed by laboratory validation using a round free jet and a stagnation flow, two flows in which either fluid acceleration has been previously measured or in which the acceleration is known analytically. A 90 degree off-axis receiving angle is used with a pinhole or a slit.
In measurements of the vibration of structures underwater with a laser Doppler vibrometer, the surface vibration is measured by means of detecting the phase change of the laser beam due to the structural vibration. The laser beam passes through the sound field radiated from the vibrating structures underwater. It experiences an additional phase change due to the change in refractive index in the radiated sound field. This phase change due to the sound field may cause the error in surface vibration measurements. In this paper, this phase change due to the radiated sound filed has been analyzed. The numerical simulation has been peformed to evaluate the phase change in sound field radiated from an infinite cylindrical structure vibrating underwater.

This study aims to evaluate the accuracy of retrieved horizontal winds with different quality control methods from three Doppler lidars deployed over the complex terrain during the PyeongChang 2018 Olympic and Paralympic games. To retrieve the accurate wind profile, this study also proposes two quality control methods to distinguish between meteorological signals and noises in the Doppler velocity field, which can be broadly applied to different Doppler lidars. We evaluated the accuracy of retrieved winds with the wind measurements from the nearby or collocated rawinsondes. The retrieved wind speed and direction show a good agreement with rawinsonde with a correlation coefficient larger than 0.9. This study minimized the sampling error in the wind evaluation and estimation, and found that the accuracy of retrieved winds can reach ~0.6 m s-1 and 3° in the quasi-homogeneous wind condition. We expect that the retrieved horizontal winds can be used in the high-resolution analysis of the horizontal winds and provide an accurate wind profile for model evaluation or data assimilation purposes.
This paper presents an underwater hybrid navigation system for a semi-autonomous underwater vehicle (SAUV). The navigation system consists of an inertial measurement unit (IMU), and a Doppler velocity log (DVL), accompanied by a magnetic compass. The errors of inertial measurement units increase with time, due to the bias errors of gyros and accelerometers. A navigational system model is derived, to include the scale effect and bias errors of the DVL, of which the state equation composed of the navigation states and sensor parameters is 20. The conventional extended Kalman filter was used to propagate the error covariance, update the measurement errors, and correct the state equation when the measurements are available. Simulation was performed with the 6-d.o,f equations of motion of SAUV, using a lawn-mowing survey mode. The hybrid underwater navigation system shows good tracking performance, by updating the error covariance and correcting the system's states with the measurement errors from a DVL, a magnetic compass, and a depth sensor. The error of the estimated position still slowly drifts in the horizontal plane, about 3.5m for 500 seconds, which could be eliminated with the help of additional USBL information.
We have constructed laser Doppler velocimetry system using self-mixing effect with a semiconductor laser. This technology is based on the frequency mixing phenomena which occurs when light scattered back from the moving object into the laser cavity interferes with light inside the laser. We have compared the value of Doppler shifted frequency with the velocity variation of the wheel. Frequency dependence on the angle between the moving direction of rotating aluminum wheel and the incident beam also have been proved. As an illustration of the performance of the velocimeter, velocity measurements of a rotating disk are described. Doppler signal shows a good linear relationship with velocity of rotating disk.

The intermitternt and transient fuel spray have been investigated from the simultaneous measurement of droplet sizes and velocities by using Phase/Doppler Particle Analyzer(PDPA). Measurement have been done on the spray axis and at the edge of the spray near nozzle at various gas-to-liquid density ratios(.rho./sub g//.rho./sub l/) that ranges from those found in free atmospheric jets to conditions typical of diesel engines. Probability density distributions of the droplet size and velocity were obtained from raw data and mathematical probability density functions which can fit the experimental distribations were extracted using the principle of maximum likelihood. In the near nozzle region on the spray axis, droplet sizes ranged from the lower limit of the measurement system to the order of nozzle diameter for all (.rho./sub g/ /.rho./sub l/) and droplet sizes tended to be small on the spray edge. At the edge of spray, average droplet velocity peaked during needle opening and needle closing. The rms intensity is greatly incresed as the radial distance from the nozzle is increased. The probability density function which can best fit the physical breakage process such as breakup of fuel drops is exponecially decreasing log-hypebolic function with 4 parameters.
