  • In tidal rivers, the water level is affected by a tidal wave. The latter creates higher flood stages that enlarge the flood plain areas and increase potential damages. In such rivers, the water level is not solely a function of the flow discharge but rather a joint function of both the discharge and tidal phenomena. This paper attempts at formulating a relation between tital water level and river flow discharge that can be used for the predictions of water level in coastal rivers. Numerical applications were performed on the HaDong and the SongJung Station in Sumjin river with satisfactory results. The correlation coefficients between the tide(M) and the water stage(Z) at the HaDong Station is 0.558, and SongJung is 0.016. From this result, the water level at HaDong Station is greatly affected by a tide, whereas songJung is not.

  • Korean funeral customs are an important part of the mourning process in Korea. A survey was conducted in the southern part by the Nak-dong river, centered around the city of Busan to examine Korean funeral rites. This study was conducted with survey research. The target population included 234 teachers and experienced the death of a family member within the last three years. Results showed that they presented their condolences 5 to 6 times on average per year. Funeral rites were performed usually at a hospital funeral hall. The preference of burial to cremation was about the same. According to the survey, funeral expenses averaged 9,570,000 won and donations received for funeral expenses, 12,630,000 won. Problems the respondents expressed about the process included large funeral expenses, the decision whether to bury or cremate, and fatigue from staying up all night. When classified according to the demographic characteristics, there were significant differences in the variables. Frequency of attending funerals depended on gender, age, and health status. Condolence style depended on religion. The type of funeral (burial or cremation) depended on family income. The type of reception depended on gender. Funeral expenses depended on the age Second, in the process of preparing for a family member's death, they thought it was important to prepare a funeral ceremony portrait of the deceased and a scroll by themselves, and the preparation

  • In this study, a series of direct shear tests were performed to investigate the characteristics of friction angles for sands and interface friction angle between sands and construction materials with respect to different relative density of the Nak-dong River sands and shearing velocity. The result of the test shows that friction angles of sands are always higher than interface friction angle between sands and construction materials. As the shearing velocity get faster, the friction angles of sand became higher. With respect to the density of sand by reducing void ratio, friction angles increase linearly, and relevant equations were proposed to calculate the friction angle by changing void ratio and relative density of sand. The interface roughness of construction materials was also an important factor in interface friction angle.

  • Halophytes are physiologically adapted to withstand the high salinity of water and saline soil. This study was conducted to elucidate the distribution of halophytes and hydrophytes in the Jungseonpo River (Sacheon-ci, Gyeongsangnam-do), Gwingok River (Hadong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do), and Gwangyangseo River (Gwangyang-ci, Jeollanam-do) in Korea. A total of six species of halophytes and ten species of hydrophytes were collected in the Jungseonpo River. Halophytes in the Gwingok River and Gwangyangseo River numbered five species and 11 species, respectively. Hydrophytes in the Gwingok River and the Gwangyangseo River numbered 13 species in five families and 16 species in eight families, respectively. Of these, Phacelurus latifolius, endemic to the west and south coast of Korea, is an endangered species in the context of investigating the ecology and conservation of halophyte species. Many individual halophyte species have been diminished due to reduced habitable area caused by sand dune destruction. The rivers in the three areas on the south coast were also different in terms of distribution of salt plants due to regional differences, and they were all different from the well-developed west coast. Seven species, including Rosa wichuraiana, have been added to South coasts compared to past records.

  • This study measured for comparison and analysis the correlation of River pollution and Soil contamination, based on the results of previous research, and then in order to increase the efficiency of study, heavy metals which cause serious side effects was limited to the case among pollutants. This study focused on the rivers that near the Urban and industrial districts, for example, Nak-Dong river, An-Yang river, Tae-Hwa river and the rivers that near the farm land or pasture, for example, Yeong-San river, Mi-Ho river, then compare and analyze the degree of actual pollution as gathered the results of Previous research. Correlationship about pollutants of river near the Urban, industrial area and drainage basin its river has been proven, and this expected because of the strong influence by point pollution source. On the other hand, I can found the opposite relationship where the river near the farm land or pasture, and this probably because of the influence by nonpoint pollution source.

  • This study tries to analyze topographic distribution and characteristics of as well as formative age and incision rate of fluvial terraces in Danyang River on western side and Geum River on eastern side of the northern Sobaek Mountains and to estimate geomorphic development during the late Quaternary in the mountains regarded as one of the uplift axes in the Korean Peninsula. OSL age dating shows that the fluvial terrace I with an altitude above riverbed of approximately 7~13 m in Danyang River has a formative age of approximately 18 ka (MIS 2) and incision rate in the river is approximately 0.156~0.194 m/ka based on the age. Altitudes above riverbed of the fluvial terrace I in Geum River range from approximately 7 to 14 m and the terrace is thought to be older than 70 ka based on age result from aeolian sediments above the terrace deposits, suggestive of an incision rate less than approximately 0.10 m/ka. These results indicate lower uplift rate in the northern Sobaek Mountains than in the Taebaek Mountains. Moreover, it can be suggested that the northern Sobaek Mountains has experienced asymmetric uplift during the late Quaternary, because the river on western side of the northern Sobaek Mountains shows greater uplift rate than the eastern side river does. Low incision rate in Geum River can be attributed to low altitude of the river basin with little difference in altitude from the base level as well as to gentle river slope due to influence of Nakdong River.

  • We estimated the loadings of nitrogen and phosphorus flowing into Gwangyang Bay front river for monthly interval from April to December of 2003. We analyzed the concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus in water and estimated the flowing rates of fresh water in 34 rivers. The amounts of water flowing into the Gwdngyang Bay from Sum-Jin River was 51-76% in the total inflow of the river. The river water over 96% of discharge was from Sumjin River, Dong River, Ju-Kyo River, Seo River and Shinkyum River. The flowing patterns of nitrogen and phosphorus into Gwangyang Bay were similar to the flowing of river. The nitrogen and phosphorus loadings into the Bay were higher in July and August than in dry seasons. In particular, the concentrations of phosphorus were high in Namshu River, Deukyang River and Kilho River sewage during in dry seasons. The range of DIN and TN loadings from Sumjim River were 46-66% and 36-64%, respectively. The loading of DIP and TP from Sumjim River were 2-55% and 12-67%, respectively. These results show that the most efficient control of N. p flow into Gwangyang Bay is to restrain the inflows of N, p from Namshu River, Deukyang River and Kilho River and to restrain the flows of N, p from Dong River, Ju-Kyo River and industrial plant. The DIN/DIP atom ratio in river water was about 18 in July and August, while the ratio was more higher in dry seasons than July and August of rainy seasons. The TN/TP atom ratio in river water was about 7 in rainy seasons, while the ratios were higher than 100 in the other months of dry seasons.

  • The Han river flowing the southern boundary of Hangyang city wall was known for scenic remote villa spot. This research is about a study on the historical and cultural landscape value of Apgujung built on hills of the Han river by Han Myeong Hoe in the mid-15th century. The results are as follows. First, the Han river has been a cultural poetical place. Second, the pavilion of west river was built as thatched roof at 1454-1456, while that of east river was erected as grand villa at 1469-1473. Third, there are characteristics of periodical landscape and origin was included on historical and cultural landscape, therefore, Apgujuing-dong has been recognized with the story. Han river where Apgujung was built has beautiful water landscape in spite of the landscape of modem downtown. Fourth, there are placeness and Han river of main landscape text streams nearby Apgujung site. Historical and cultural landscape of Apgujung should be changed, but, the landscape value could be progressed with the application as cultural contents while the Han river flows. It could be cultivated on the application of various culture contents and story of Apgujung when the historical landscape of water system be restored in Han river.
