A computer code for an optimum design of solar space and domestic hot water heating system has been developed. The f-chart method developed by S.A. Klein et al. has been incorporated in the present computer code. The main conclusions obtained from the present work may be summarized as follows: (1) In Seoul area, about 46% of the total heating load can be obtained from the solar collectors whose total surface area is about one-third of the total heating floor area. (2) In Pusan area, total area of solar collectors should be about half of the total heating floor area in order to obtain an equivalent solar fraction of Seoul. (3) In cheju area, on the other hand, only about 42% of the total heating floor area of solar collectors is needed to get the same solar fraction as in Seoul and Pusan. (4) In order to get the first 50% solar fraction, only about 10-14 collectors ($4'{\times}8'$ collectors) are required, whereas about 48 collectors are needed to obtain the solar fraction of 100%. That is, roughly 3.5-4.5 times greater number of collectors are required to increase the solar fraction from 50% to 100%. Therefore, it can be concluded that it is relatively inefficient and less economical to build a solar system whose solar fraction exceeds more than 50%.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the performance of solar thermal system according to regional weather conditions and feedwater temperature. The performance analysis of the system was carried out for the annual and winter periods in terms of solar fraction, collector efficiency and it's optimal degree. The system is simulated using TRNSYS program for 6 cities, Seoul, Incheon, Gangneung, Mokpo, Gwangju, and Ulsan. Simulation results prove that the solar fraction of the system varies greatly from region to region, depending on weather conditions and feedwater temperatures. Monthly average solar fraction for winter season from November to February, a time when heat energy is most required, indicated that the highest is 73.6% in Gangnueng and the lowest is 56.9% in Seoul. This is about 30% relative difference between the two cities. On the other hand, the collector efficiency of the system for all six cities was analyzed in the range between 40% and 42%, indicating small difference compare to the solar fraction. The annual average solar fraction is rated the highest at 40 collector degree, while monthly average solar fraction during winter season is rated at 60 degree.
Purpose: Condensation in walk-in closets attached to apartment bathroom has been known as an emerging issue that may threat occupants' comfort and health. Despite a number of design guidelines and enforcements to prevent condensation, condensation issues may still occur depending on various cases and scenarios. We aim to identify what condensation scenarios may lead to walk-in closet condensation and/or worse the existing condensation issues. Method: First we choose an actual walk-in closet of an apartment that suffers from sporadic condensation and resulting mold and mildew. Then we observe its relative humidity and temperature after the bathroom is used, in which excessive vapor is thought to be transported to the walk-in closet. We analyze Temperature Difference Ratio - a domestic indicator of condensation occurrence, and dew point temperature to compare it with surface temperature using 2D heat transfer simulation upon various condensation scenarios. Result: TDR of the test walk-in closet turns out be OK despite mold and mildew actually occurring. Hot water pipe installed in the floor would greatly reduce condensation. If hot water pipe in the upper floor, however, is not used, or hot water pipe of the closet is turned off during swing seasons, it is expected that condensations may still occur.

Most of the domestic residential buildings have used the traditional radiant heating system, circulating hot water through the cross-linked polyethylene(PE-X) pipe buried in the floor panel of the heating space. New type of the heating panel was recently developed using heat pipes with double wicks. Some experiments were carried out in this study to verify the thermal characteristics of this heating system at the unit heating space which surrounded by outer space whose temperature of air be maintained scheduled value with time. Through the various experiments with several parameters, such as flow rate, inlet and outlet temperatures of hot water and the heating duration and so on, we found that the floor heating system with heat pipes was able to reduce the pumping power for hot water circulation by 4~31% compared with the conventional panel heating system using PE-X pipe. These results could be used for optimal design and efficient operation of the heating system as well as improvement of thermal comfort.

The renewable energy is known as eco-friendly energy to reduce the use of fossil fuel and decrease the environmental pollution due to exhaust gas. Targets of solar collector in domestic are usually acquisitions of hot water and hot air. System of air-heating collector is one of the technologies for obtaining hot air in cases of especially heating room and drying agricultural product. The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of thermal flow such as relative pressure, velocity, outlet temperature and buoyancy effect in air-heating collector using solar heat. The flow field of air-heating collector was simulated using ANSYS-CFX program and the behaviour of hot air was evaluated with SST turbulence model. As the results, The streamline in air-heating collector showed several circular shapes in case of condition of buoyancy. Temperature difference in cross section of outlet of air-heating collector did not almost show in cases of buoyancy and small inlet velocity. Furthermore merit of air-heating collector was not observed in cases of inlet velocities. Even though it was useful to select condition of buoyancy for obtaining high temperature, however, it was confirmed that the trade off between high temperature of room and rapid injection of hot air to room could be needed through this numerical analysis.

It is estimated that only heating and cooling take about one third of the total energy consumption worldwide. However, the conventional heating and cooling systems have low efficiencies. Also, boilers and electric heaters that are mostly used to generate both domestic and industrial hot water are inefficient and high energy consumers. For this reason, cascade heat pumps which are known to be very energy efficient and have less environmental impact are being promoted to replace conventional heating, cooling and hot water systems. In this study, a newly designed cascade heat pump by two-stage water heating method has been experimentally investigated. By adopting the auxiliary heat exchanger, the performance of the system was increased. The performance enhancement rate of the system could be maximized by adjusting the low stage compressor speed rather than the high stage compressor speed. The performance of the system with the auxiliary heat exchanger was enhanced by 16.5%.

Waste heat exhausted from seven types of the domestic industry was surveyed, which include food, fibre, paper & wood, chemical, ceramics, metalworking and others. The databases of waste heat for each industry were made by using ACCESS software of Microsoft, and data were analyzed to get correlation between waste heat and purchase energy. The volume of usable waste heat is estimated to be 9,169,000 TOE in the year of 2000, when the minimum available temperature is set as $100^{\circ}C$ for waste gas, $30^{\circ}C$ for hot water and $100^{\circ}C$ for steam considering the condition of waste heat exhausting facilities and surroundings. This volume of waste heat is approximately 11.9 percent of the purchase energy of the domestic industry.

In this study, annual site and primary energy use intensities (EUIs) and $CO_2$ emission intensities (CEIs) per area by end use were estimated based on the measurement data from June 2016 to May 2017 of 19 sample office buildings in Seoul. In addition, the estimated site EUIs by end use were compared to the U.S. Commercial Buildings Energy Consumption Survey (CBECS) 2012 data. Average site EUIs by end use were found to be in the order of electric appliance (typical floors) > heating > cooling > lighting > air movement > domestic hot water > vertical transportation > city water supply. In the case of primary EUIs and CEIs by end use, electric appliance was found to be the largest. As results of comparison with the CBECS 2012 data, it was found that the site EUIs were similar for heating, cooling, domestic hot water, and electric appliance, etc., but slightly different for lighting and air movement. The number of sample office buildings will continue to increase until 2020 (total number of samples 85) and intensities data by end use will be continuously updated through continuous collection of measurement data.
A solar thermal collector is a solar collector specifically intended to collect heat: that is, to absorb sunlight to provide heat. A flat plate is the most common type of solar thermal collector, and is usually used as a solar hot water panel to generate solar hot water. A flat plate collector consists basically of an insulated metal box with a glass or a plastic cover and a dark-colored copper absorber plate. Solar radiation is absorbed by the copper absorber plate and transferred to water that circulates through the collector in copper tubes. Ultrasonic welding is an industrial technique whereby high-frequency ultrasonic acoustic vibrations are locally applied to work pieces being held together under pressure to create a solid-state weld. In this study, we developed solar collector ultrasonic welding machine with digital controlled power supply and tested various welding conditions such as welding pressure, welding amplitude, welding speed. Welding speed was considered in 2~12m/min. The width of ultrasonic welds was increased with welding amplitude by 2.2~2.5mm. The fracture load of ultrasonic welds showed 20% higher than domestic products.
This research was carried out to examine the properties of black charcoal board, in order to find the proper manufacturing condition for the black charcoal-board made of the charcoal. The charcoal in this study was distillated from domestic wood waste, and it were also the purpose of this study to see if the black charcoal-board has the advantageous properties of charcoal as a well-being building material against the sick house problem. Domestic wood waste was consisted of MDF 40%, PB 30%, plywood 15% and wood 15%, respectively. Black charcoal board was produced by hot pressing with following conditions; temperature $170^{\circ}C$, three stage pressing cycle of $40-10-40\;kgf/cm^2$(1min.-2.5min.-5min.) and non formaldehyde adhesives [P15%+M5%:MDI(M), poly vinyl acetate emulsion(P). Fine mixed particle size [#6-12(16.9%), #12-18(16.7%), #12-40(47.2%), #40-60(9.5%), #60-100(5.9%), less than #100(3.8%)] gave better results than larger particle size [over #6(33.8%), #12-18(17.7%), #12-40(37.7%), #40-60(6.4%), #60-100(2.6%), less than #100(1.8%)]. Final moisture content of the mat was best at 36%. Black charcoal-board showed less MOR and IB(internal bond), more WA(water absorption) than that of white charcoal-board. Black charcoal board showed not only the same gas adsorption and dimensional stability as white charcoal board but also good cutting, nailing and drilling for indoor environment systems.
