  • A Conjugate Gradient algorithm for unconstrained minimization is proposed which is invariant to a nonlinear scaling of a strictly convex quadratic function and which generates mutually conjugate directions for extended quadratic functions. It is derived for inexact line searches and for general functions. It compares favourably in numerical tests (over eight test functions and dimensionality up to 1000) with the Dixon (1975) algorithm on which this new algorithm is based.

  • Carpogonia, spermatangia and carposporangia are demonstrated for North Atlantic plants of Audouinella alariae (Jonsson) Woelkerling for the first time. The plants are monoecious. Carpogonia are terminal on short branches and give rise to short trichogynes laterally. Spermatangia are usually borne in pairs on the supporting cells of carpogonia. Fertilized carpogonia give rise to 3-4 carposporangia. Morphology of sexual reproductive structures and postfertilization development provide characteristics for distinguishing A. alariae from A. rhipidandra (Rosenvinge) Dixon, which were previously synonymized.

  • Rotifers collected from Duung and Gyeongpo wetlands in Korea were investigated. Five species belonging to five genera in four families of monogonont rotifers were identified: Cephalodella ventripes (Dixon-Nuttall), Dicranophorus grandis (Ehrenberg), Lecane undulata Hauer, Taphrocampa selenura Gosse, and Testudinella emarginula (Stenroos). All these species are new to the Korean fauna, even though they have very wide or cosmopolitan distributions. The present study is the first report on the genus Taphrocampa Gosse from Korea. The taxonomy and distribution of each new Korean record are briefly discussed here. The diagnostic characteristics, photomicrographs and the deposition of voucher specimen are provided for each new Korean record.

  • A 7-month-old, female miniature pig was presented with excessive cerumen and pruritus. Greasy brown cerumen in both exteranal ear canal and sporadic head shaking were observed in the physical examination. Numerous budding yeasts in the cerumen were examined on microscopic examination. For species identification, PCR-RFLP using incubated colony on modified Dixon's medium was performed and finally, causative yeast was identified as M. furfur.

  • Background: Various strategies have been studied to reduce the propofol injection pain. This study was designed to find out effect-site target concentration (Ce) of remifentanil at which there was a 50% probability of preventing the propofol injection pain (EC50). Methods: Anesthesia was induced with a remifentanil TCI (Minto model). The Ce of remifentanil for the first patient started from 2.0 ng/ml. The Ce of remifentanil for each subsequent patient was determined by the response of the previous patient by Dixon up-and-down method with the interval of 0.5 ng/ml. After the remifentanil reached target concentrations, propofol was administered via a target-controlled infusion system based on a Marsh pharmacokinetic model using a TCI device (Orchestra$^{(R)}$; Fresenius-Vial, Brezins, France). The dose of propofol was effect site target-controlled infusion (TCI) of $3{\mu}g/ml$. Results: The EC50 of remifentanil to prevent the propofol injection pain was $1.80{\pm}0.35ng/ml$ by Dixon's up and down method. Conclusions: The EC50 of remifentanil to blunt the pain responses to propofol injection was $1.80{\pm}0.35ng/ml$ for propofol TCI anesthesia.

  • Purpose: To determine the MR parameters affecting India ink artifacts on opposed-phase chemical shift magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Materials and Methods: The use of a female Sprague-Dawley rat was approved by our Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee. Using an iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetry and least-squares estimation (IDEAL) images, which is a modified Dixon method, axial opposed-phase images of the abdominal cavity were obtained with different MR parameters: series 1, different repetition times (TRs; 400, 2000, and 4000 ms); series 2, different echo times (TEs; 10, 50, and 100 ms); series 3, different field of views (FOVs; 6, 8, 16, and 24 cm); series 4, different echo train lengths (ETLs; 2, 4, and 8); series 5, different bandwidths (25, 50, and 85); and series 6, different slice thicknesses (1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 mm). Artifacts on opposed images obtained with different parameters were compared subjectively by two radiologists. For objective analysis, the thickness of the artifact was measured. Spearman's correlation between altered MR parameters and thicknesses of India ink artifact was obtained via objective analysis. Results: India ink artifact was increasingly apparent using shorter TE, larger FOV and ETL, and thicker slices upon subjective analysis. The objective analysis revealed a strong negative correlation between the thickness of the artifact and TE (r = -0.870, P < 0.01); however, strong positive correlations were found between FOV (r = 0.854, P < 0.01) and slice thickness (r = 0.971, P < 0.01). Conclusion: India ink artifact was thicker with shorter TE, larger FOV, and larger slice thickness.
