  • The aim of the paper is to use optimization and advanced numerical computation of a sail fiber-reinforced composite model to increase the performance of a yacht under wind action. Designing a composite-shell system against the wind is a very complex problem, which only in the last two decades has been approached by advanced modeling, optimization and computer fluid dynamics (CFDs) based methods. A sail is a tensile structure hoisted on the rig of a yacht, inflated by wind pressure. Our objective is the multiple criteria optimization of a sail, the engine of a yacht, in order to obtain the maximum thrust force for a given load distribution. We will compute the best possible yarn thickness orientation and distribution in order to minimize the total fiber volume with some displacement constraints and in order to leave the most uniform stress distribution over the whole structure. In this paper our attention will be focused on computer simulation, modeling and optimization of a sail-shape mathematical model in different regatta and wind conditions, with the purpose of improving maneuverability and speed made good.

  • This paper proposes a new approximate approach to calculate the order fill rate and the probability of filling an entire customer order immediately from the shelf in a business environment under purchase dependence characterized by customer purchase patterns observed in such areas as marketing, manufacturing systems, and distribution systems. The new approximate approach divides customer orders into item orders and calculates fill rates of all order types to approximate the order fill rate. We develop a greed iterative search algorithm (GISA) based on the Gauss-Seidel method to avoid dimensionality and prevent the solution divergence for larger instances. Through the computational analysis that compares the GISA with the simulation, we demonstrate that the GISA is a dependable algorithm for deriving the stationary joint distribution of on-hand inventories in the type-K pure system. We also present some managerial insights.

  • The estimation of the extreme wind load (effect) under a mean recurrence interval (MRI) is an important task in the wind-resistant design for the structure. It can be predicted by either first-order method or full-order method, depending on the accuracy and complexity requirement. Although the first-order method with the consideration of wind directionality has been proposed, less work has been done on the full-order method, especially with the wind directionality. In this study, the full-order method considering the wind directionality is proposed based on multivariate joint probability distribution. Meanwhile, considering two wind directions, the difference of the corresponding results based on the first-order method and full-order method is analyzed. Finally, based on the measured wind speed data, the discrepancy between these two methods is investigated. Results show that the difference between two approaches is not obvious under larger MRIs while the underestimation caused by the first-order method can be larger than 15% under smaller MRIs. Overall, the first-order method is sufficient to estimate the extreme wind load (effect).

  • This paper presents an approach for using right-truncated exponentially distributed random variables to model activity times in stochastic activity networks. The advantages of using the right-truncated exponential distribution are discussed. The moments of a project completion time using the proposed distribution are derived and compared with other estimated moments in literature.

  • This paper is concerned with the production-distribution problem with multiple conflicting objectives. In reality business firms should take account not only of the profit maximization but of various environmental criteria, namely customer services, in order to improve the business logistics. A production-distribution model of goal porgramming type considering the lead time and distribution cost by products is constructed, the solution algorithm is developed, which is based on the Ignizio's method. A numerical example is given to demonstrate the applicability of goal programming for production-distribution problem.

  • Gamma distributions are some of the most popular models for hydrological processes. In this paper, a very flexible family which contains the gamma distribution as a particular case is introduced. Evidence of flexibility is shown by examining the shape of its pdf and the associated hazard rate function. A comprehensive treatment of the mathematical properties is provided by deriving expressions for the nth moment, moment generating function, characteristic function, Renyi entropy and the asymptotic distribution of the extreme order statistics. Estimation and simulation issues are also considered. Finally, a detailed application to drought data from the State of Nebraska is illustrated.

  • We propose a 3rd order blind equalizer that incorporates a new transform method using either square root operation ($\sqrt{x]$) or reciprocal operation (1/x) in order to transform symmetric distribution of PAM signals at the transmitter, to asymmetric one. At the receiver, either the square operation or the reciprocal operation is needed to recover the asymmetrically transformed signals to the original ones after eualization. The reslts of the computer simulation, using the new method are better than the existing transform method using natural logarithm operation by the maximum of 8 dB in MSE. In addition, as the skewness of the asymmetrically transformed distribution has small values, the performances are improved.

  • In the brake systems a proportioning valve which reduces the brake pressure at each wheel cylinder for anti-locking of rear wheels is closely related with the safety of vehicles. But, it is impossible for a present proportioning valve to exactly control brake pressure because mechanically it is an open loop control system. So, in this paper we describe a electronic brake pressure distribution system using a fuzzy controller in order to exactly control brake pressure using a close loop control system. The object of electronic brake pressure distribution system is to change an cut-in pressure and an valve slop of proportioning valve in order to obtain better good performance of brake system than with mechanical system.

  • In order to improve the efficiency of service restoration function in the current Distribution Automation System (DAS), in this paper it is proposed a more advanced and efficient service restoration approach using Multi-Agent technique based on distributed networks. In the current DAS, communication networks or protocol structures are centralized with communications between the central station and FRTU through 1:1 connection. In order to maintain the current systems and enhance the proposed Multi-Agent based service restoration scheme, a device of communication and intelligence, named MASX, is newly developed to make a FRTU as an agent to cooperate each others. the proposed system applied in a demo system for an distribution automation system and shows 8 times reduction of restoration time in restoration of blackouts.

  • Recently, there are widely needs of small scale electrostatic precipitator(ESP) in machine shop and other factories. Since the space of such factories is limited, the improvement of collection efficiency is predominant subject. In this study, we examine the influence of distribution of wind velocity and oil mist concentration inside the ESP in order to improve the performance of the ESP. The distribution of wind velocity and mist concentration is measured respectively in a cross-sectional plane of the ESP. The former is controlled by using a louver which is placed in front of an ionizer and the latter is controlled by lengthening the pipe of entrance of the ESP in order to have plenty of time that mist is dispersed evenly. It is shown that the uniformity of distribution of wind velocity and mist concentration inside the ESP can be getting by adopting a louver with proper shape and lengthening the pipe of entrance and is also contributed to collection efficiency considerably.
