  • This paper describes the operation analysis results of a communication-based DC micro-grid using a hardware simulator developed in the lab. The developed hardware simulator is composed of distributed generation devices such as wind power, photovoltaic power and fuel cells, and energy storage devices such as super-capacitors and batteries. Whole system monitoring and control was implemented using a personal computer. The power management scheme was implemented in a main controller based on a TMS320F28335 chip. The main controller is connected with the local controller in each of the distributed generator and energy storage devices through the communication link based on a CAN or an IEC61850. The operation analysis results using the developed hardware simulator confirm the ability of the DC micro-grid to supply the electric power to end users.

  • The increased diversity of different types of energy sources requires moving towards smart distribution networks. This paper proposes a probabilistic DG (distributed generation) units planning model to determine technology type, capacity and location of DG units while simultaneously allocating ESS (energy storage systems) based on pre-determined capacities. This problem is studied in a wind integrated power system considering loads, prices and wind power generation uncertainties. A suitable method for DG unit planning will reduce costs and improve reliability concerns. Objective function is a cost function that minimizes DG investment and operational cost, purchased energy costs from upstream networks, the defined cost to reliability index, energy losses and the investment and degradation costs of ESS. Electrical load is a time variable and the model simulates a typical radial network successfully. The proposed model was solved using the DICOPT solver under GAMS optimization software.

  • The microgrid concept is a promising approach for injecting clean, renewable, and reliable electricity into power systems. It can operate in both the grid-connected and the islanding mode. This paper addresses the two main challenges associated with the operation of a microgrid i.e. control and protection. A control strategy for inverter based distributed generation (DG) and an energy storage system (ESS) are proposed to control both the voltage and frequency during islanding operation. The protection scheme is proposed to protect the lines, DG and ESS. Further, the control scheme and the protection scheme are coordinated to avoid nuisance tripping of the DG, ESS and loads. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified by simulation and experimental results.

  • In this paper, we propose a construction method of fractional repetition codes, a class of distributed storage codes, using relative difference families. The proposed codes can support multiple replication degrees for data symbols. It is shown via simulation that the proposed codes store more data than the random fractional repetition codes.

  • This paper describes the operational analysis results of the bipolar DC distribution system coupled with the distributed generators. The energy management for AC/DC power trade and the operational principle of distributed generators and energy storages were first analyzed by computer simulation with PSCAD/EMTDC software. After then a hardware simulator for the bipolar DC distribution system was built, which is composed of the grid-tied three-level inverter, battery storage, super-capacitor storage, and the voltage balancer. Various experiments with the hardware simulator were carried out to verify the operation of bipolar DC distribution system. The developed simulator has an upper-level controller which operates in connection with the controllers for each distributed generator and the battery energy storage based on CAN communication. The developed hardware simulator are possible to use in designing the bipolar DC distribution system and analyzing its performance experimentally.

  • Recently, owing to increased interest in low-carbon energy supplies, renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics and wind turbines in distribution networks have received considerable attention for generating clean and unlimited energy. The presence of energy storage systems (ESSs) in the promising field of active distribution networks (ADNs) would have direct impact on power system problems such as encountered in probabilistic distributed generation (DG) model studies. Hence, the optimal procedure is offered herein, in which the simultaneous placement of an ESS, photovoltaic-based DG, and wind turbine-based DG in an ADN is taken into account. The main goal of this paper is to maximize the net present value of the loss reduction benefit by considering the price of electricity for each load state. The proposed framework consists of a scenario tree method for covering the existing uncertainties in the distribution network's load demand as well as DG. The collected results verify the considerable effect of concurrent installation of probabilistic DG models and an ESS in defining the optimum site of DG and the ESS and they demonstrate that the optimum operation of an ESS in the ADN is consequently related to the highest value of the loss reduction benefit in long-term planning as well. The results obtained are encouraging.

  • Microgrid as a unit component consisting a smart grid is an isolated system, which has a decentralized power supply system. This paper proposes an electrical isolation of the microgrid from the utiliy grid based on a power conditioning system, and also proposes an operation method maintaining the isolated state efficiently using diverse distributed energy resources such as renewable energy sources and energy storage system. The proposed system minimizes the influence of the grid connection on the internal load though a phase detection and synchrnoization to the utiligy grid and the microgrid can be stable even if the grid is failed.

  • Cloud computing has been receiving increasing attention recently. Despite this attention, security is the main problem that still needs to be addressed for cloud computing. In general, a cloud computing environment protects data by using distributed servers for data storage. When the amount of data is too high, however, different pieces of a secret key (if used) may be divided among hundreds of distributed servers. Thus, the management of a distributed server may be very difficult simply in terms of its authentication, encryption, and decryption processes, which incur vast overheads. In this paper, we proposed a efficiently data storage and recovery scheme using XOR and RAID in Hadoop environment.

  • In the age of personal media such as YouTube and Twitch, individual media content creation and consumption have become simpler. A huge amount of media content is created and consumed through platform services. In this regard, interest in copyright of media contents is increasing. In particular, the sound source is an indispensable element in almost all media contents production. In this paper, we propose a method to store the sound source and its signature using blockchain and distributed storage system to verify the copyright of music contents. We Identify the possibility of including the audio signature extraction result of the sound source as blockchain transaction data. Through experiments, we compare the input and output speed when the sound source and its signature are stored in the distributed storage system.
