The back-to-back and box-shaped headers used in light gauge steel structures have some disadvantages, i.e., construction efficiency and cost competitiveness. As such, cold-formed steel L-shaped headers have been developed and are used actively in advanced nations. However, this system has not been used in Korea because of inadequate investigation and adaptation efforts and lack of application example. Thus, this research evaluated the structural performance of L-header using buckling analyses and bending tests. Test results were compared using the AISI design criteria. Test results showed that local buckling and distortional buckling governed buckling behavior in gravity loads and uplift loads, respectively. These results were consistent with the calculated nomial strengths using the AISI design criteria.
A comparative experimental study of prestressed continuous steel-concrete composite beams was carried out. Two continuous composite beams were tested, one of which was plain continuous steel-concrete composite beam, while the other was a composite beam prestressed with external tendons. Cracking behavior and the load carrying capacity of the beams were investigated experimentally. Full plasticity was developed in the mid-span section each beam, the maximum moments attained at the internal support sections however were governed by local buckling which was related to the slenderness of composite section. It was found that in hogging moment regions, the ultimate resistance of an externally prestressed composite beam would be governed by either distortional lateral buckling or local buckling, or interactive mode of these two buckling patterns. The results show that exerting prestressing on a continuous composite beam with external tendons will increase the extent of internal force and moment redistribution in the beam. The influences of local and distortional buckling on the behaviors of the composite continuous beams are discussed. The Moment redistribution and the load carrying capacity of the prestressed continuous composite beams are evaluated, and it is found that at the ultimate state, the moment redistribution in the prestrssed continuous composite beams is greater than that in non-prestressed composite beams.

Main goal of this study is to develop MATLAB programming for exact analysis of distortional deformation of the straight box girder. For this purpose, a theory for distortional deformation theory is firstly summarized and then a BEF (Beam on Elastic Foundation) theory is presented using analogy of the corresponding variables. Finally, the governing equation of the beam-column element on elastic foundation is derived. An element stiffness matrix of the beam element is established via a generalized linear eigenvalue problem. In order to verify the efficiency and accuracy of the element using exact dynamic stiffness matrix, buckling loads for the continuous beam structures with elastic foundation and distortional deformations of box girders are calculated.
Cold-formed steel (CFS) is prone to buckling failure under loading. Lightweight concrete (LC) made of lightweight aggregate has light weight and excellent thermal insulation performance. However, concrete is brittle in nature which is why different materials have been used to improve this inherent behavior of concrete. The distortional buckling (DB) performance of cold-formed steel-lightweight concrete (CFS-LC) composite columns was investigated in this paper. Firstly, the compressive strength test of foam concrete (FC) and ceramsite concrete (CC) was carried out. The performance of the CFS-LC members was investigated. The test results indicated that the concrete-filled can effectively control the DB of the members. Secondly, finite element (FE) models of each test specimen were developed and validated with the experimental tests followed by extensive parametric studies using numerical analysis based on the validated FE models. The results show that the thickness of the steel and the strength of the concrete-filled were the main factors on the DB and bearing capacity of the members. Finally, the bearing capacity of the test specimens was calculated by using current codes. The results showed that the design results of the AIJ-1997 specification were closer to the experimental and FE values, while other results of specifications were conservative.
In this paper, the inelastic buckling behavior of the beam under uniform bending was investigated using the energy-based method, which can tackle problems in fourth order eigenvalue. The pattern of residual stress was not available to satisfy the I-sections manufactured in Korea. however; therefore, the well-known polynomial and simplified pattern of residual stress was adopted in this study. The inelastic lateral-distortional buckling behavior of the beam with I-sections manufactured in Korea was investigated. The study was then extended to the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of the beam by minimizing the out-of-plane web distortion. The inelastic lateral-torsional buckling results obtained in this paper were compared with the prediction of allowable bending stress given in the Korean steel designers' manual (1995). Results showed that the importance of inelastic lateral-distortional buckling did not arise for beams under uniform bending. Likewise, the design method in KSDM (1995) was proven to bo too conservative for intermediate and short spans of beams without intermediate bracing.

The homotopy perturbation method (HPM) to predict the pre- and post-buckling behaviour of simply supported steel beams with rectangular hollow section (RHS) is presented in this paper. The non-linear differential equations solved by HPM derive from a kinematics where large twist and cross-sections distortions are considered. The results (linear and non-linear paths) given by the present HPM are compared to those provided by the Newton-Raphson algorithm with arc length and by the commercial FEM code Abaqus. To investigate the effect of cross-sectional distortion of beams, some numerical examples are presented.
The cold-formed steel stud, which has been used as a load-bearing member of wall panels for steel houses, poses a significant problem in insulation due to heat bridging of the web. Therefore, some additional thermal insulating materials are required. In order to solve this problem, the cold-formed steel thermal stud with slits in the web was developed. However, estimating the structural strength of thermal studs is very difficult because of the arrangement of perforations. In this paper, an analytical and experimental research on thermal studs is described. Three types of studs with different length, pitch and arrangement of slits were tested to failure. A simple design approach was proposed based on the test results. The proposed method adopted the direct strength method, based on the elastic local and distortional buckling stress of plain studs with equivalent thickness in the web instead of thermal studs. The predictions using the proposed method were compared with test results for verification and the adequacy of the proposed method was confirmed.
The effect of element interaction and material nonlinearity on the ultimate capacity of stainless steel plated cross-sections is investigated in this paper. The focus of the research lies in cross-sections failing by local buckling; member instabilities, distortional buckling and interactions thereof with local buckling are not considered. The cross-sections investigated include rectangular hollow sections (RHS), I sections and parallel flange channels (PFC). Based on previous finite element investigations of structural stainless steel stub columns, parametric studies were conducted and the ultimate capacity of the aforementioned cross-sections with a range of element slendernesses and aspect ratios has been obtained. Various design methods, including the effective width approach, the direct strength method (DSM), the continuous strength method (CSM) and a design method based on regression analysis, which accounts for element interaction, were assessed on the basis of the numerical results, and the relative merits and weaknesses of each design approach have been highlighted. Element interaction has been shown to be significant for slender cross-sections, whilst the behaviour of stocky cross-sections is more strongly influenced by the material strain-hardening characteristics. A modification to the continuous strength method has been proposed to allow for the effect of element interaction, which leads to more reliable ultimate capacity predictions. Comparisons with available test data have also been made to demonstrate the enhanced accuracy of the proposed method and its suitability for the treatment of local buckling in stainless steel cross-sections.
The objective of this work is to describe the main steps involved in the derivation of a GBT (Generalised Beam Theory) formulation to analyse the vibration behaviour of loaded cold-formed steel members and also to illustrate the application and capabilities of this formulation. In particular, the paper presents and discusses the results of a detailed investigation about the local and global free vibration behaviour of lipped channel simply supported columns. After reporting some relevant earlier GBT-based results dealing with the buckling and vibration behaviours of columns and load-free members, the paper addresses mostly issues concerning the variation of the column fundamental frequency and vibration mode nature/shape with its length and axial compression level. For validation purposes, some GBT-based results are also compared with values obtained by means of 4-node shell finite element analyses performed in the code ABAQUS.

Cold-Formed C-section and Lipped C-section are commonly used as structural members of steel houses in Korea. Both are made of SGC41 steel. However, special Cold-Formed Sections with unique cross sectional shape have been developed and widely used in advanced countries. This research focused on the newly developed thin-walled Cold-Formed Sections which possess not only high strength and stiffness but also other advantages in construction. A series of compression tests was conducted to investigate the structural behavior of a compression member, including its load carrying capacity. Test results were compared with analytical study results.
