An alternative interpretation of the completeness requirements for the higher order elements is presented. Apart from the familiar condition, $\sum_iN_i=1$, some additional conditions to be satisfied by the shape functions of higher order elements are identified. Elements with their geometry in the natural form, i.e., without any geometrical distortion, satisfy most of these additional conditions inherently. However, the geometrically distorted elements satisfy only fewer conditions. The practical implications of the satisfaction or non-satisfaction of these additional conditions are investigated with respect to a 3-node bar element, and 8- and 9-node quadrilateral elements. The results suggest that non-satisfaction of these additional conditions results in poorer performance of the element when the element is geometrically distorted. Based on the new interpretation of completeness requirements, a 3-node element and an 8-node rectangular element that are insensitive to mid-node distortion under a quadratic displacement field have been developed.
This paper introduces two three-dimensional eight-node hexagonal elements obtained by using multivariable variational mehtod. Both of them are based on the modified hellinger-reissner principle to employ incompatible displacements and assumed stresses of assumed strains. The internal functions of element are introduced to as element formulation through two different methods : the first one uses the functions determined directly from the element boundary condition of the incompatible displacements ; while the second, being a kind of B-bar mehtod, employs the modification technique of strain-displacement matrix to pass the patch test. The elements are evaluated on the selective problems of bending and material incompressibility with regular and distorted meshes. The results show that the new elements perform with good accuracy in both of deformation and stress calculation and they are insensitive to distorted geometry of element.
A first order shear deformable Loop-subdivision triangular element which can handle transverse shear deformation of moderately thick shell is developed. The developed element is general since it includes the effect of transverse shear deformation and has standard six degrees of freedom per node.(three translations and three rotations) The quartic box-spline function is employed as interpolation basis function. Numerical examples for the benchmark problems are analyzed in order to assess the performance of the newly developed subdivision shell element. Both in the uniform and in the distorted mesh configurations.
This paper newly proposes a mesh regularization method for the enhancement of the efficiency in sheet metal forming analysis. The regularization method searches for distorted elements with appropriate searching criteria and constructs patches including the elements to be modified. Each patch is then extended to a three-dimensional surface in order to obtain the information of the continuous coordinates. In constructing the surface enclosing each patch, NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) surface is employed to describe a three-dimensional free surface. On the basis of the constructed surface, each node is properly arranged to form unit elements as close as to a square. The analysis results with the proposed method are compared to the results from the direct forming analysis without mesh regularization in order to confirm the validity of the method.

One of the important subjects in fracture mechanics study is to analyze the stress intensity factor. In this paper, the stress intensity factor in Mode I ($K^{I}$) is determined by J-integral using the finite element method. In this investigation, the values of $K^{I}$ are computed for distorted and undistorted elements of 8-noded isoparametric finite elements. The numerical results obtained are summarized as follows. (1) Through a relatively coarse mesh, the $K^{I}$ values obtained by this method are fairly good accuracy. (2) The $K^{I}$ values for the distorted elements appear to be better than those obtained using the undistorted mesh. (3) Within the limits of these analyses, the solutions obtained through the integral paths in the medium region of elements approach to the analytical solution most closely.
The state variables calculated from its original mesh geometry are mapped into the new mesh geometry for the next stage or incremental step of a forming analysis. The analysis results with the proposed method are compared to the results from the direct forming analysis without mesh regularization in order to confirm the validity of the method.
A very large shell-structure built in shipyards like ship hulls or offshore structures are joined by welding through full process. As the welding contains a high thermal cycle at a local area, the welded structures should be distorted unavoidably. Because a distorted ship block should be revised to the designed value before the next stage, the ability to predict and to control the weld distortion is an accuracy level of the yard itself. Despite the ship block size, several present thermal distortion methodologies can deal those sizes, but it is a different story to deal full ship size model. Even a fully constructed ship hull not remaining any welding can have an accuracy issue like outfitting installation problems. Any present thermal distortion methodology cannot accept this size for its recommended element size and the number. The ordinary welding breadth at erection stage is about 20~40 mm. It can hardly be a good choice to make finite element model of these sizes considering human effort and computational environment. The finite element model for structure analysis of a ship hull is prepared at front-end engineering design stage which is the first process of the project. The element size of the model is as fine as the longitudinal space, and it is not proper to obtain a weld distortion at the erection stage. In this study, a methodology is suggested that a weldment can be shrunk at original place instead of using structural finite element model. We cut the original shell elements at erection weld-line and put truss elements between the edges of cut elements for weld shrinkage. Additional truss elements are used to facsimile transverse weld shrinkage which cannot be from the weld-line truss element shrink. They attach to weld-line truss element like twigs from barks. The capacity of developed elements is verified through an accuracy check of erection process of a container vessel at the apt. hull. It can be a useful tool for verifying a centering accuracy after renew and for block-separating planning considering accuracy.
In the finite element analysis of metal forming Processes using general Lagrangian formulation, element nodes in the mesh move and elements are distorted as the material is deformed. The excessive degeneracy of mesh interrupts finite element analysis and thus increases the error of plastic deformation energy, In this study, a remeshing scheme using so-called mesh compression method is proposed to effectively analyze the flash which is generated usually in hot forging processes. In order to verify the effectiveness of the method, several examples are tested in two-dimensional and three-dimensional problems.
A new efficient hybrid/mixed thin~moderately thick plate bending element with 6-node (HM6-14) is formulated based on the Reissner-Mindlin plate bending theory. The convergence of this element is proved by error estimate theories and verified by patch test respectively. Numerical studies on such an element as HM6-14 demonstrate that it has remarkable convergence, invariability to geometric distorted mesh situations, to axial rotations, and to node positions, and no "locking" phenomenon in thin plate limit. The present element is suitable to many kinds of shape and thin~moderately thick plate bending problems. Further, in comparison with original hybrid/mixed plate bending element HP4, the present element yields an improvement of solutions. Therefore, it is an efficient element and suitable for the development of adaptive multi-field finite element method (FEM).
This paper addresses an efficient modification method that eliminates the undesirable effects of strains due to various non-conforming modes so that the non-conforming element can pass the patch test unconditionally. The scheme is incorporated in the element formulation to establish new types of non-conforming hexahedral elements designated as NHx and NVHx for the regular element and variable node element, respectively. Non-conforming displacement modes are selectively added to the ordinary (conforming) element displacement assumptions to improve the bending behavior of the distorted solid element. To verify the validation of proposed direct modification method and the improvement of element behavior, several numerical tests are carried out. Test results show that the proposed method is effective and its applications to non-conforming solid elements guarantee for the element to pass the patch test.
