  • The extraction of metallic pure vanadium powder from raw oxide has been tried by Mg-reduction. In first stage, $V_2O_5$ powders as initial raw material was reduced by hydrogen gas into $V_2O_3$ phase. $V_2O_3$ powder was reduced in next stage by magnesium gas at 1,073K for 24 hours. After reduction reaction, the MgO component mixed with reduced vanadium powder were dissolved and removed fully in 10% HCl solution for 5 hours at room temperature. The oxygen content and particle size of finally produced vanadium powders were 0.84 wt% and 1 ${\mu}m$, respectively

  • This experiment was performed to develop the new desulfurization process which can eliminate the possibility of generation of the secondary pollutants by regenerating the limestone from the sulfite/sulfate slurry generated from the wet lime/limestone flue gas desulfurization process by treating it with the ammonium hydroxide and carbon dioxide and using it again. In the experiments, regent grade calcium carbonate was dissolved to obtain the 200ml of sample slurry of the concentration of 2.0~0.4 weight percent. After three times of regeneration and desulfurization process, the coefficients of regeneration and desulfurization efficiencies are calculated/measured. The obtained results are that the coefficients of generation of the first. second, and third regenerated calcium carbonate were 90.88, 92.13, and 91.50%, respectively; and the desulfurization efficiencies of those are 93.4, 94.2 and 93.0%, respectively.

  • The use of fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gases around the world causes an increase of the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere. In order to reduce the concentration of the greenhouse gas, the idea of carbon dioxide sequestration in the ocean is proposed to be an effective mitigation strategy to counteract potential global warming due to the greenhouse effect. Therefore, in the present study, calculations of the dissolution behavior of carbon dioxide when liquid carbon dioxide is released at 1,000m and 1,500m in depth by fixed pipeline are performed. The results show that carbon dioxide droplets change to carbon dioxide bubbles in gas phase around 500m in depth, and the droplets are completely dissolved below 500 m in depth if the liquide carbon dioxide is released both at 1,000 m in depth with the initial diameter of 0.007m or less and at 1,500m in depth with the diameter of 0.011m or less.

  • A gas chromatography/mass spectrometric assay method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of icing inhibitors, ethylene glycol monomethyl ether and diethylene glycol monomethyl ether in ground water contaminated with JP-8. Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether and ethylene glycol monoethyl ether were used as the internal standard and surrogate, respectively. 100 mL of ground water was extracted twice with 20 mL of methylene chloride. The extract was concentrated to dryness, dissolved with 100 ${\mu}$L of methanol and analyzed by GC-MS (SIM). The use of an Innowax column gave the peaks good chromatographic properties, and the extraction of these compounds from samples gave recoveries of about 50% with small variations. The method detection limits of the target compounds were in a range of 0.5-0.8 ng/mL in ground water.

  • Power transformer is one of the most important equipments in electrical power system. The detection of certain gases generated in transformer is the first indication of a malfunction that may lead to failure if not detected. Dissolved gas analysis (DGA) of transformer oil has been one of the most reliable techniques to detect the incipient faults. Many conventional DGA methods have been developed to interpret DGA results obtained from gas chromatography. Although these methods are widely used in the world, they sometimes fail to diagnose, especially when DGA results falls outside conventional method codes or when more than one fault exist in transformer. To overcome these limitations, fuzzy inference system (FIS) is proposed. 250 different cases are used to test the accuracy of various DGA methods in interpreting the transformer condition.

  • The planar solid oxide fuel cell(SOFC) contains several ceramic materials depending on its structure and has rdfractory metal parts for manifolds, shrouds and current leads. Among ceramic materials for planar SOFC, joining of lanthanum chromite separator and yttria stabilized zirconia(YSZ) electoyte in planar SOFC stack to give strong gas tight seals is necessary for satisfactory operation and high performance. Nevertheless, for planar SOFC/sub s/, how to seal the cell stack and gas manifold remains as one of the unsolved problems. Therefore, in this study. we investigated the joining of sintered lanthanum chromite and YSZ pellets using unsintered lanthanum chromite green films as sealent. Scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDX) revealed that Ca in the sealing material diffused and dissolved into YSZ and sintered lanthanum chromite, and unsintered lanthanum chromite green films reacted with YSZ to from a new phase at the interface. Also, the densification of unsintered lanthanum chromite green films was inpeded by the Ca migration.

  • A sensitive and specific method is described for the determination of midazolam in human plasma. The drug was extracted from 1 mL of carbonate buffered plasma (pH 9.6) with 8 mL of diethyl ether. Famprofazone was used as internal standard. The organic phase was evaporated to dryness. The residue was dissolved in methanol for the direct analysis by gas chromatograph-nitrogen phosphorus detector system. In the concentration range of 1-5000 ng/mL, the calibration curve was linear. The coefficients of variation from the precision test were <6% at the range of the concentration of 0.10-2.00 μg/mL and the detection limit for midazolam in 1 mL of plasma was o.5 ng. This assay is more sensitive, selective, simple and rapid than earlier methods. Plasma midazolam concentrations were determined by this method after administration of midazolam.

  • Chromium was coated on a steel substrate by the Cr(III) electroplating method, and corroded at $500-900^{\circ}C$ for 5 h in $N_2/0.1%H_2S-mixed$ gas to study the high-temperature corrosion behavior of the Cr(III) coating in the highly corrosive $H_2S-environment$. The coating consisted of (C, O)-supersaturated, nodular chromium grains with microcracks. Corrosion was dominated by oxidation owing to thermodynamic stability of oxides compared to sulfides and nitrides. Corrosion initially led to formation of the thin $Cr_2O_3$ layer, below which (S, O)-dissolved, thin, porous region developed. As corrosion progressed, a $Fe_2Cr_2O_4$ layer formed below the $Cr_2O_3$ layer. The coating displayed relatively good corrosion resistance due to formation of the $Cr_2O_3$ scale and progressive sealing of microcracks.

  • A novel process to recover lithium and manganese oxides from a cathode material (LiMn2O4) of spent lithium-ion battery was attempted using thermal reaction with hydrogen gas at elevated temperatures. A hydrogen gas as a reducing agent was used with LiMn2O4 powder and it was found that separation of Li2O and MnO was taken place at 1050℃. The powder after thermal process was washed away with distilled water and only lithium was dissolved in the water and manganese oxide powder left behind. It was noted that manganese oxide powder was found to be 98.20 wt.% and the lithium content in the solution was 1,928 ppm, respectively.
