  • The effects of the base-isolation system and elastic soil foundation on the behavior of a liquid storage tank are studied. To evaluate the seismic response of liquid storage tank accurately, the coupled dynamic system considering base isolation and soil interaction problem is formulated in time domain. Results show that the base isolation system reduces effectively the radial displacements, base shears, overturning moments, axial resultant stresses and the hydrodynamic pressure by providing flexibility and energy dissipation capability. Base Isolation may, however, increase the relative liquid sloshing amplitude due to the effect of liquid-structure interaction and cause excessive large relative displacements between structure and foundation. In addition to base-isolator, the dynamic behavior of liquid storage tank is related to the flexibility of base foundation, so the analysis of soil-structure interaction s achieved.

  • The improvement of speed and ride comfort requires a very horizontally and vertically rigid and non-flexible alignment. It is inevitable to construct many bridges depending on the topography of landscapes and obliged to lay turnouts on the bridges. In that case, special considerations have to be taken into account, i.e. permissible stresses of turnout components and limitations of displacements of bridge and turnouts. In this studies, numerical analyses for turnout/bridge interaction are carried out using commercial program LUSAS. The target of analytical model is the turnout layed near Pyeongrae-Hopyeng station on Kyeongchun line. The lead rail, stock rails, and the bridge are modelled using beam elements. Fasteners and ballast resistances are modelled using bi-linear spring elements. The turnout behaviors are investigated by varying the parameters such as span length of bridge, spring coefficients, and thermal loads.

  • The lower toughness or brittle materials for mechanical test lead to the additional requirement that applied displacements be controlled with high resolution. Biaxial tension and shear tester using stepper motor with harmonic driver is shown. The device had to be high resolution so that the crack initiation process of slow extension and steady growth could be examined, Grip plates were connected to a linear bearing and actuator. The actuators consisted of stepper motors with harmonic driver connected to pre-loaded ball screw and nut assemblies. The encoders and motor controllers were connected to a personal computer so that arbitrary displacements histories could he prescribed in normal and tangential directions. The linear bearings were used to react loads perpendicular to their axes while allowing low friction, parallel movement of the attached grips. Load cells measured the reactions normal and tangential. the loads measured the reactions were recorded by the computer.

  • Wave Transmission analysis is one of methods for power transmission and reflection coefficients in coupled infinite structures. This paper focuses the wave transmission analysis of point coupled structures among semi-infinite beams and infinite thin plates considering all kinds of waves. It is supposed that the junction through the beams and plates is an identical spot and no point of contact exist except the spot. The boundary conditions are applied at the spot for continuities of 6 DOF displacements and 6 DOF force equilibriums, and then wave fields are obtained in the coupled structures. Since wave components in plate field are simplified using asymptotic expressions of Henkel functions, the displacements and forces at the plate junction can be simply expressed with magnitudes of the wave components. The wave fields according to incident waves gives the power transmission coefficients in beam/plate point coupled structures. For both coupled structures with a beam vertically and obliquely joined to a plate, power transmission analysis is performed and the analysis results are compared and examined.

  • The physical properties of DMPC monolayer were made for dielectric relaxation phenomena by the detection of the surface pressures and displacements current. Lipid thin films were deposited by accumulation and the current was measured after the electric bias across the manufactured MIM device. It is found that the phospolipid monolayer of dielectric relaxation takes a little time and depend on the molecular area. When electric bias is applied across the manufactured MIM device by the deposition condition of phospolipid mono-layer, it wasn't breakdown when the higher electric field to impress by increase of deposition layers.

  • Modern trend in structural design is to use smaller elements in order to ensure several purposes such as economy, functionality and aesthetic in appearance. However, because of decreasing rigidity of the structural elements, the system displacements increases and displacements become an important subject in this kind of structures takes into account both geometrical changes and the carrying capacity of the material after linear-elastic boundary. In this study, a method is proposed to calculate the failure loads and to analyse the reinforced concrete space frame systems. The numerical examples gathered from the literature survey are solved with this method utilising the prepared computer program and the comparable results are presented. The results show that the method is sufficiently accurate.

  • To achieve appropriate stresses, two new rectangular elements are presented in this study. For reaching this aim, a complementary energy functional is used within an element for the analysis of plane problems. In this energy form, the Airy stress function will be used as a functional variable. Besides, some basic analytical solutions are found for the stress functions. These trial functions are matched with each element number of degrees of freedom, which leads to a number of equations with the anonymous constants. Subsequently, according to the principle of minimum complementary energy, the unknown constants can be expressed in terms of displacements. This system can be rewritten in terms of the nodal displacement. In this way, two new hybrid-rectangular triangular elements are formulated, which have 16 and 40 degrees of freedom. To validate the outcomes, extensive numerical studies are performed. All findings clearly demonstrate accuracies of structural displacements, as well as, stresses.

  • Most of structural analyses are concerned with the deformation and stress in a body subjected to external loads. In many fields, however, the interpretation of inverse problems is needed to determine surface tractions or internal stresses. In this study, the inverse processes by using the finite elements and the boundary elements are formulated for the evaluation of internal residual stresses from displacements measured on a remote surface. Small errors in the measured displacements often result in a substantial loss of accuracy of an inverse system. We use the Tikhonov regularization techniques to regularize the ill-conditioned system. Advantages and disadvantages are discussed through numerical examples.

  • A multifield variational formulation is developed for the finite element (FE) cross-sectional analysis of composite beams. The cross-sectional warping displacements and sectional stresses are considered to be the primary variables through the application of Reissner's partially mixed principle. The warping displacements are modeled using generic FE shape functions with nonlinear distribution over the beam section. A generalized Timoshenko level stiffness matrix is derived which incorporates the effects of elastic couplings, transverse shear, and Poisson's deformations. The accuracy of the present analysis is validated for the stiffness constants and elastostatic responses of composite box beams which correlate well with the experimental data and other state-of-the-art approaches.

  • This study was intended to research the displacement characteristics of dampers for Korea hish-speed rolling-stock for the purpose of developing the protective and maintenance technology of damper. For this, we measured the displacements of dampers in the actual running conditions of high speed railway vehicles. Displacement data were analyzed depending on the service sections, with which the valuable data necessary for maintenance in the future could be obtained.
