  • Monolayers of lipids on a water surface have attracted much interest as models of biological membranes, but also as precursors of multilayer systems promising many technical applications. Until now, many methodologies have been developed in order to gain a better understand. Photoisomerization in monolayers of a novel azobenzene compound, azobenzene dendrimer, was investigated for the first time by means of the absorption spectrum and Maxwell displacement current (MDC) technique. Dendrimers are well-defined macromolecules exhibiting a tree-like structure, first derived by the cascade molecule approach. According to the absorption spectrum, trans-to-cis conversion ratio was estimated to the third generation of azobenzene dendrimer deposited onto a glass substrate. Temperature-dependent induced charge with trans-cis isomerization was also measured by means of MDC technique.

  • This paper deals with the aeroelastic instability of vibrating multiple blade rows under aerodynamic coupling with each other. A model composed of three blade rows, e.g., rotor-stator-rotor, where blades of the two rotor cascades are simultaneously vibrating, is considered. The displacement of a blade vibrating under aerodynamic force is expanded in a modal series with the natural mode shape functions, and the modal amplitudes are treated as the generalized coordinates. The generalized mass matrix and the generalized stiffness matrix are formulated on the basis of the finite element concept. The generalized aerodynamic force on a vibrating blade consists of the component induced by the motion of the blade itself and those induced not only by vibrations of other blades of the same cascade but also vibrations of blades in another cascade. To evaluate the aerodynamic forces, the unsteady lifting surface theory for the model of three blade rows is applied. The so-called k method is applied to determine the critical flutter conditions. A numerical study has been conducted. The flutter boundaries are compared with those for a single blade row. It is shown that the effect of the aerodynamic blade row coupling substantially modifies the critical flutter conditions.

  • This paper presents a optimization of sigmoid activation function parameter using genetic algorithms and pattern recognition analysis in input space of two spirals benchmark problem. To experiment, cascade correlation learning algorithm is used. In the first experiment, normal sigmoid activation function is used to analyze the pattern classification in input space of the two spirals problem. In the second experiment, sigmoid activation functions using different fixed values of the parameters are composed of 8 pools. In the third experiment, displacement of the sigmoid function to determine the value of the three parameters is obtained using genetic algorithms. The parameter values applied to the sigmoid activation functions for candidate neurons are used. To evaluate the performance of these algorithms, each step of the training input pattern classification shows the shape of the two spirals.

  • A sea water source cascade heat pump was designed and tested in this study. The system was designed to perform a single stage operation in summer, as well as a cascade operation in winter to ensure the high temperature lift. A steady-state simulation model was developed to analyze and optimize its performance. The simulation results show that the R717 exhibits best performance among combinations considered in this study. A R410A also exhibits the highest performance among HFCs with the smallest compressor displacement. A 15-RT R410A-R134a pilot system was installed in the 5-story commercial building at Samcheok City by the East Sea. A scroll type R410A compressor, a reciprocating type R134a compressor, plate type condenser/ evaporator/ cascade heat exchanger and two electronic expansion valves were used to build a pilot. A titanium plate type heat exchanger is also used for the heat exchanging with a sea water. The heat source/sink water is supplied from the well below the seashore in the depth of 5 m. In the initial test of the system, supply water temperature was rising up to $67^{\circ}C$ using a sea water heat source of $9^{\circ}C$, while an ambient temperature was $4.5^{\circ}C$.
