  • A new ground penetrating radar imaging method for the estimation of buried artificial structures location and their approximate shapes in dispersive lossy ground is investigated. Fundamental idea is based on estimating delayed time and amplitude retrieval coefficients from scattered signals by buried scatterers. Using absolute value integration of each scanning site not only improve the accuracy of measured scattered signal, but also offers convenient ways to extract the image of buried structures. Multi-term Debye model was employed to describe a dispersive and lossy ground medium. We used the finite difference time domain method to discretize the wave equation in continuous form into the machine suitable form. This imaging method uses a new wave path tracing technique in time domain, which is helpful to identify the exact position of buried structures against the ground surface fluctuations.

  • We numerically demonstrate the performance of a plasmonic lens composed of an array of nanoslits perforated on thin metallic film with slanted cuts on the output surface. Embedding Kerr nonlinear material in nanoslits is employed to modulate the output beam. A two dimensional nonlinear-dispersive finite-difference time-domain (2D N-D-FDTD) method is utilized. The performance parameters of the proposed lens such as focal length, full-width half-maximum, depth of focus and the efficiency of focusing are investigated. The structure is illuminated by a TM-polarized plane wave and a Gaussian beam. The effect of the beam waist of the Gaussian beam and the incident light intensity on the focusing effect is explored. An exact formula is proposed to derive electric field E from electric flux density D in a Kerr-Dispersive medium. Surface plasmon (SPs) modes and Fabry-Perot (F-P) resonances are used to explain the physical origin of the light focusing phenomenon. Focused ion beam milling can be implemented to fabricate the proposed lens. It can find valuable potential applications in integrated optics and for tuning purposes.

  • JEC method for Debye medium is required more memory resources and long calculation time than already well-known method such as RC method. It has been observed that JEC method would be converted to a memory effcient method by a change of discrete convolution integral range. The modified JEC method proposed here requires memory and calculation time similar to RC method, while it has a same or a smaller dispersion error than conventional methods, RC and JEC.

  • The circular cylinder pipes are used in the many industrial areas. In this paper, the acoustic wave propagation in the pipe containing a gas is researched. First of all, the theory for the coupled acoustic wave propagation in a pipe is investigated. Acoustic wave propagation in pipe can not be occurred independently between the wave of the fluid and the shell. It requires complicated analysis. However, as a special case, the coupled wave in a high density pipe containing a light density medium is corresponded closely to the uncoupled in-vacuo shell waves and to the rigid-walled duct fluid waves. The coincidence frequencies of acoustic and shell modes contribute to the predominant energy transmission. The coincidence frequency means the frequency corresponding to the coincidence of the wavenumber in both acoustic and shell. In this paper, it is assumed that the internal medium is much lighter than the pipe shell. After the uncoupled acoustic wave in the internal medium and uncoupled shell wave are considered, the coincidence frequencies are found. The analysis is successfully confirmed by the verification of the experiment using the real long steel pipe. This work verifies that the coupled wave characteristic of the shell and the fluid is occurred as predominant energy transmission at the coincidence frequencies.

  • Conformal methods such as staircase approximation and effective medium theory have been used to model arbitrary dielectric surfaces in Cartesian FDTD(finite-difference time-domain) grids. However, the staircase approximation doesn't guarantee accurate results and the effective medium theory cannot be applied for frequency dispersive medium. In this paper, a simple conformal method is introduced for analyzing arbitrary dielectric surfaces. These arbitrarily shaped dielectric surfaces make nonuniformly filled FDTD cells. E(H)-field in a nonuniformly filled FDTD cell is calculated by considering the cell as the combination of two kinds of uniformly filled cells whose material boundaries are normal and parallel to the E(H)-field in the cell. TM scattering from a rotated 2-D dielectric and a ferrite square cylinder is analyzed to show the accuracy of the proposed method.

  • This paper presents the extraction scheme of the scattered waves by a target above the ground using the buried antenna in a lossy and dispersive medium. The half wave dipole antennas are used to transmit and to receive a signal. The transmission line model as a feeding model is considered to take into account the effect of transmission line in a real system. The ground is modeled by the 2nd order Debye approximation with the dispersion and loss. PLRC algorithm and DPML as absorbing boundary condition are utilized to apply the 2nd order Debye approximation to FDTD. To extract the scattered wave, in addition, we employed the delay time extraction algorithm. The simulations are conducted to observe the variation of magnitude in scattered wave and detection of target position according to the change of moisture content of the lossy medium.

  • The specific benefits of the modified films formed on preliminary anodized aluminum, including the versatility of their potential applications impose the need for evaluation of the exploitation reliability of these films. In this aspect, the durability of Cu and Ni modified anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) films on the low-doped AA1050 alloy was assessed through extended exposure to a 3.5% NaCl model corrosive medium. The electrochemical measurements by means of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic scanning (PDS) after 24 and 720 hours of exposure have revealed that the obtained films do not change their obvious barrier properties. In addition, supplemental analyses of the coatings were performed, in order to elucidate the impact of the AC-deposition of Cu and Ni inside the pores. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images have shown that the surface topology is not affected and resembles the typical surface of an etched metal. The subsequent energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) tests have revealed a predominance of Cu in the combined AAO-Cu/Ni layers, whereas additional X-ray photoelectron (XPS) analyses showed that both metals form oxides with different oxidation states due to alterations in the deposition conditions, promoted by the application of AC-polarization of the samples.

  • A technique is presented that uses a circular waveguide for the measurement of the bulk shear(S-wave) velocities of unconsolidated, saturated media, with particular application to near surface soils. The technique requires the measurement of the attenuation characteristics of the fumdamental T(0,1) mode that propagates along an embedded pipe, from which the acoustic properties of the surrounding medium are inferred. From the dispersion curve analysis, the feasibility of using T(0,1) mode which is non-dispersive and have constant attenuation over all frequency range is discussed. The principles behind the technique are discussed and the results of an experimental laboratory validation are presented. The experimental data are best fitted for the different depths of wetted sand and the shear velocities as a function of depths are formulated using power law curves.

  • Talc (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2), one of the sheet silicate minerals, which is the hydrothermal alteration product of serpentinite at Cheongarm mine was prepared for the high pressure compressibility studies. Energy dispersive X-ray diffraction experiment was carried out using the Synchrotron Radiation with the Mao-Bell type diamond anvil cell at room temperature. Polycrystalline talc was mixed with MgO powder for pressure sensor as well as pressure medium in the sample chamber. High pressure runs were performed at pressures up to 35.2 GPa. Talc shows no phase transition within the present high pressure region. Bulk modulus of this talc was determined by the Birch-Murnaghan equation of state to be 78 GPa assuming its first pressure derivative Ko' of 4.
