  • Our research purpose in this paper is to improve the performance of query processing in GIS(Geographic Information System) by enhancing the I/O performance exploiting parallel I/O and efficient disk access. By packing adjacent spatial data, which are very likely to be referenced concurrently, into one block or continuous disk blocks, the number of disk accesses and the disk access overhead for query processing can be decreased, and this eventually leads to the I/O time decrease. So, in this paper, we proposes EPR(Enhanced Parallel R-tree) indexing method which integrates the parallel I/O method of the previous Parallel R-tree method and a packing-based clustering method. The major characteristics of EPR method are as follows. First, EPR method arranges spatial data in the increasing order of proximity by using Hilbert space filling curve, and builds a packed R-tree by bottom-up manner. Second, with packing-based clustering in which arranged spatial data are clustered into continuous disk blocks, EPR method generates spatial data clusters. Third, EPR method distributes EPR index nodes and spatial data clusters on multiple disks through round-robin striping. Experimental results show that EPR method achieves up to 30% or more gains over PR method in query processing speed. In particular, the larger the size of disk blocks is and the smaller the size of spatial data objects is, the better the performance of query processing by EPR method is.

  • Flash memory, which replaces hard disk recently, has different physical characteristics with hard disk. For the performance of flash memory based storage system, many researches over OS and file system layers has been doing. In this paper, we propose the architecture of flash memory based storage which uses information of page invalidation when file deletion occurs from upper layer. Also, we evaluate the performance of proposed system. Proposed system effectively increases IO performance by using page invalidation information to block merge and wear leveling algorithms.

  • In the silicon wafer polishing process, the mounting stage of silicon wafer on the ceramic carrier block has been using the polishing template which utilizes the porous surface instead of traditional wax mounting method. Here in this article, the experimental study is carried out in order to study the wafer demounting by water jet and the effects of operating conditions such as the water jet flowrate and the number of water jet nozzles on the wafer demounting time. It is found that the measured wafer demounting time is inversely proportional to the water flowrate per nozzle, regardless of number of nozzles used; implying that the stagnation pressure by the water jet impingement is the dominant key factor. Additionally, by using the transparent disk instead of wafer, the air bubble formation and growth is observed under the disk, making the passage of water flow, and subsequently demounting the wafer from the porous pad.

  • Polyoxymethylene copolymer (POM-C) is an attractive and widely used engineering thermoplastic across many industrial sectors owing to outstanding physical, mechanical, self-lubricating and chemical properties. In this research work, the POM-C blocks were irradiated with 1 MeV electron beam energy in five doses (100, 200, 300, 500 and 700 KGy) in vacuum condition at room temperature. The tribological and physico-chemical properties of electron beam irradiated POM-C blocks have been analyzed using Pin on disk tribometer, Raman spectroscopy, SEM-EDS, Optical microscopy, 3D Nano surface profiler system and Contact angle analyzer. Electron beam irradiation at a dose of 100 kGy resulted in a decrease of the friction coefficient and wear loss of POM-C block due to well suited cross-linking, carbonization, free radicals formation and energetic electrons-atoms collisions (physical interaction). It also shows lowest surface roughness and highest water contact angle among all unirradiated and irradiated POM-C blocks. The irradiation doses at 200, 300, 500 and 700 kGy resulted in increase of the friction coefficient as compared to unirradiated POM-C block due to severe chain scission, chemical and physical structural degradation. The electron beam irradiation transferred the wear of unirradiated POM-C block from the abrasive wear, adhesive wear and scraping to mild scraping for the 1 MeV, 100 kGy irradiated POM-C block which is concluded from SEM-EDS and Optical microscopic observations. The degree of improvement for tribological attribute relies on the electron beam irradiation condition (energy and dose rate).

  • While disk can be overwritten on updating data, because flash memory can not be overwritten on updating data, new data are updated in new area. If data are frequently updated, garbage collection, which is achieved by erasing blocks, should be performed to reclaim new area. Hence, because the number of erase operations is limited due to characteristics of flash memory, every block should be evenly written and erased. However, if data with access locality are processed by cost benefit algorithm with separation of hot block and cold block, though the performance of processing is high, wear-leveling is not even. In this paper, we propose CB-MB (Cost Benefit between Multi Bank) algorithm in which hot data are allocated in one bank and cold data in another bank, and in which role of hot bank and cold bank is exchanged every period. CB-MB showed that its performance was similar to that of others for uniform workload, however, the method provides much better performance than that of others for workload of access locality.

  • In the recent years, Popularization of mobile devices such as Smart Phones, PDAs and MP3 Players causes rapid increasing necessity of Power management technology because it is most essential factor of mobile devices. On the other hand, despite low price, hard disk has large capacity and high speed. Even it can be made small enough today, too. So it appropriates mobile devices. but it consumes too much power to embed In mobile devices. Due to these motivations, in this paper we had suggested methods of minimizing Power consumption while playing multimedia data in the disk media for real-time and we evaluated what we had suggested. Strict limitation of power consumption of mobile devices has a big impact on designing both hardware and software. One difference between real-time multimedia streaming data and legacy text based data is requirement about continuity of data supply. This fact is why disk drive must persist in active state for the entire playback duration, from power management point of view; it nay be a great burden. A legacy power management function of mobile disk drive affects quality of multimedia playback negatively because of excessive I/O requests when the disk is in standby state. Therefore, in this paper, we analyze power consumption profile of disk drive in detail, and we develop the algorithm which can play multimedia data effectively using less power. This algorithm calculates number of data block to be read and time duration of active/standby state. From this, the algorithm suggested in this paper does optimal scheduling that is ensuring continual playback of data blocks stored in mobile disk drive. And we implement our algorithms in publicly available MPEG player software. This MPEG player software saves up to 60% of power consumption as compared with full-time active stated disk drive, and 38% of power consumption by comparison with disk drive controlled by native power management method.

  • This research is to design an effective buffer structure and its management for flash memory based high performance SSDs (Solid State Disks). Specifically conventional SSDs tend to show asymmetrical performance in read and /write operations, in addition to a limited number of erase operations. To minimize the number of erase operations and write latency, the degree of interleaving levels over multiple flash memory chips should be maximized. Thus, to increase the interleaving effect, an effective buffer structure is proposed for the SSD with a hybrid address mapping scheme and super-block management. The proposed buffer operation is designed to provide performance improvement and enhanced flash memory life cycle. Also its management is based on a new selection scheme to determine random and sequential accesses, depending on execution characteristics, and a method to enhance the size of sequential access unit by aggressive merging. Experiments show that a newly developed mapping table under the MBA is more efficient than the basic simple management in terms of maintenance and performance. The overall performance is increased by around 35% in comparison with the basic simple management.

  • No comprehensive tillage system of corn (Zea mays L.) has been conducted in Korea. Therefore, this experiment was carried to determine soil characteristics, weed and forage production in tillage system of corn. Plot was allotted to one of four treatments in a randomized block design using tillage system. The four treatments were (T1) conventional tillage, plow and rotary till, (T2) rotary till, (T3) disk till, and (T4) no-till system. In soil characteristics before planting and after harvest of corn, pH and organic matter at planting date was higher than at harvest date, however, there were no difference among tillage system. Days from planting to silking of no-till was the longest among tillage system. Lodging resistance of disk and no-till were higher than conventional and rotary till due to its thicken stem diameter. Main weed in corn field are barnyard grass (Echinochloa crusgall), velvetleaf(Abutilon avicennae), crabgrass (Digitatia saguinalis), and redroot pigweed (Amaranthus retroflexus). Weed population was lower in no-till than others tillage system. Dry matter (DM) content and ear percentage of conventional and rotary till were higher than others in corn field. However, DM and total digestible nutrients (TDN) yields of disk and no-till were higher than those of conventional and rotary till. Therefore, disk and no-till are more suitable in corn silage system because of high lodging resistance and forage yield, and low weed population.

  • SSD has a limitation of number of erase/write cycles and does not allow in-place update unlike the hard disk because SSD is composed of an array of NAND flash memory. Thus, FTL is used to effectively manage SSD of having different characteristics from traditional disk. FTL has page, block, log-block mapping method. Among then, when log-block mapping method such as BAST and FAST is used, the performance of SSD is degraded because frequent merge operations cause lots of pages to be copied and deleted. This paper proposes a data allocation and replacement method based on access frequency by allocating PRAM as checking area of access frequency, log blocks, storing region of hot data in SSD. The proposed method can enhance the performance and lifetime of SSD by storing cold data to flash memory and storing log blocks and frequently accessed data to PRAM and then reducing merge and erase operations. Besides, a data replacement method is used to increase utilization of PRAM which has limitation of capacity. The experimental results show that the ratio of erase operations of the proposed method is 46%, 38% smaller than those of BAST and FAST and the write performance of the proposed method is 34%, 19% higher than those of BAST and FAST, and the read performance of the proposed method is 5%, 3% higher than those of BAST and FAST, respectively.

  • Traditional technologies that are used to improve the performance of hard disk drives show many negative cases if they are applied to solid state drives (SSD). Access time and block sequence in hard disk drives that consist of mechanical components are very important performance factors. Meanwhile, SSD provides superior random read performance that is not affected by block address sequence due to the characteristics of flash memory. Practically, it is recommended to disable prefetching if a SSD is installed in a personal computer. However, this paper presents a combinational method of a prefetching scheme and a memory management that consider the internal structure of SSD and the characteristics of NAND flash memory. It is important that SSD must concurrently operate multiple flash memory chips. The I/O unit size of NAND flash memory tends to increase and it exceeded the block size of operating systems. Hence, the proposed prefetching scheme performs in an operating unit of SSD. To complement a weak point of the prefetching scheme, the proposed memory management scheme adaptively evicts uselessly prefetched data to maximize the sum of cache hit rate and prefetch hit rate. We implemented the proposed schemes as a Linux kernel module and evaluated them using a commercial SSD. The schemes improved the I/O performance up to 26% in a given experiment.
