  • Quality function deployment (QFD) is a widely adopted customer-oriented product development methodology by analyzing customer requirements. It is a main activity in QFD planning process to determine the optimal values of the technical attributes (TAs) so as to achieve the customer requirements (CRs) from the House of Quality (HoQ). In most of the previous research, all the TAs in QFD are assumed to have either continuous or discrete values. In the real world applications, the continuous TAs and the discrete TAs are often mixed in QFD. In this paper, a mixed integer linear programming model is formulated to obtain the optimal values for the continuous TAs and the discrete TAs in QFD planning as well as Branch and Bound (B and B) algorithm is proposed as the solution approach. Finally, the proposed model and solution approach are illustrated with an office chair under multi-segment market, and the sensitivity analysis is performed to study how the proposed model and its solutions respond to the variation for the two elements which are budget and CRs' weights.

  • This paper describes a methodology for the development of models of discrete event system(DES). The methodology is based on transformation of continuous state space into discrete one to homomorphically represent dynamics of continuous processes in discrete events. This paper proposes a formal structure which can couple DES models within a framework. The structure employs the DEVS formalism for the DES models. The proposed formal structure has been applied to develop a DEVS model for the human cardiovascular system. For this, the cardiac cycle is partitioned into a set of phases based on events identified through VisSim simulation in the CS of the electrical analog model. VisSim is the simulation tool of visual environment for developing continuous, discrete, and hybrid system models and performing dynamic simulation. For each phase, a CS of the electrical analog model for the cardiovascular system has been simulated by VisSim 2.0. To validate this model, first develop the DEVS model, then simulate the model in the DEVSIM++ environment. It has same simulation results for the data obtained from the CS simulation using VisSim. The comparison shows that the DEVS model represents dynamics of the human heart system at each phase of cardiac cycle.

  • Identification theory for linear discrete system has been presented by a great many reference, but research works for identification of continuous-time system are less than preceding identification. In fact, a great man), systems for engineering are continuous-time systems, hence, research for identification of continuous-time system has important meaning. This paper offers the following results: 1. Corresponding relations for the parameters of continuous-time model and discrete model may be shown, when single input-output system has general characteristic roots. 2. To do identification of single variable continuity linear system with stability constraints from samples of input-output data, it is necessary to use optimization with stability constraints. 3. Main results of this paper may be explained by a simple example.

  • In the fast sampling limit the delta operator model tends to the analog system model. This fundamental property of the delta operator model unifies continuous and discrete time control system. In this paper we study robust linear optimal model following servo system in the presence of disturbances and parameter perturbations. A technique to directly design the generalized differential operator based unified control system that covers both differential operator based continuous time and delta operator based discrete time case is presented. The quadratic criterion function for a linear system is used to design the robust unified servo control system The characteristics of the proposed servo system are analysed and simulated to verify the robustness.

  • It was reported recently that railpads can be included as a continuous elastic support of the rail and the model was justified from experiments. In general, however, railpads are installed discretely on sleepers with a regular span. The effect of the discrete railpad was not clearly examined so far in such a high frequency range. In this paper, the effect of the railpads in track modelling for high frequencies is investigated by means of the finite element analysis. To do that, the railpads are regarded as 'a continuous elastic support' and 'a discrete elastic support' in this paper. The dispersion relations and decaying features are predicted and compared between the two models up to 80 kHz.

  • The Discrete Element Method adopting particles for the domain discretization has recently been adopted in fracture studies of non-homogeneous continuous media such as concrete and rock. A model is proposed in which the reinforcement is modelled by 1D rigid-spring discrete elements. The rigid bars interact with the rigid circular particles that simulate the concrete through contact interfaces. The DEM enhanced model with reinforcement capabilities is evaluated using three point bending and four point bending tests on reinforced concrete beams without stirrups. Under three point bending, the model is shown to reproduce the expected final crack pattern, the crack propagation and the load displacement diagram. Under four point bending, the model is shown to match the experimental ultimate load, the size effect and the crack propagation and localization.

  • A magnetically levitated vehicle (Maglev) system is under commercialization as a new transportation system in Korea. The Maglev is operated by an unmanned automatic control system. Therefore, the plan of train operation should be carefully established and validated in advance. In general, when making a train operation plan, statistically predicted traffic data is used. However, a traffic wave often occurs in real train service, and demand-driven simulation technology is required to review a train operation plan and service quality considering traffic waves. We propose a method and model to simulate Maglev operation considering continuous demand changes. For this purpose, we employed a discrete event model that is suitable for modeling the behavior of railway passenger transportation. We modeled the system hierarchically using discrete event system specification (DEVS) formalism. In addition, through implementation and an experiment using the DEVSim++ simulation environment, we tested the feasibility of the proposed model. Our experimental results also verified that our demand-driven simulation technology can be used for a priori review of train operation plans and strategies.

  • In this brief report, alternative time-varying diversification rate models were fitted onto the phylogeny of global amphibians by considering one-constant-rate (OCR), one-continuous-shift (OCS) and multiple-discrete- shifts (MDS) situations. The OCS diversification model was rejected by ${\gamma}$ statistic (${\gamma}=-5.556$, p<0.001), implying the existence of shifting diversification rates for global amphibian phylogeny. Through model selection, MDS diversification model outperformed OCS and OCR models using "laser" package under R environment. Moreover, MDS models, implemented using another R package "MEDUSA", indicated that there were sixteen shifts over the internal nodes for amphibian phylogeny. Conclusively, both OCS and MDS models are recommended to compare so as to better quantify rate-shifting trends of species diversification. MDS diversification models should be preferential for large phylogenies using "MEDUSA" package in which any arbitrary numbers of shifts are allowed to model.

  • Crack opening governs many transfer properties that play a pivotal role in durability analyses. Instead of trying to combine continuum and discrete models in computational analyses, it would be attractive to derive from the continuum approach an estimate of crack opening, without considering the explicit description of a discontinuous displacement field in the computational model. This is the prime objective of this contribution. The derivation is based on the comparison between two continuous variables: the distribution if the effective non local strain that controls damage and an analytical distribution of the effective non local variable that derives from a strong discontinuity analysis. Close to complete failure, these distributions should be very close to each other. Their comparison provides two quantities: the displacement jump across the crack [U] and the distance between the two profiles. This distance is an error indicator defining how close the damage distribution is from that corresponding to a crack surrounded by a fracture process zone. It may subsequently serve in continuous/discrete models in order to define the threshold below which the continuum approach is close enough to the discrete one in order to switch descriptions. The estimation of the crack opening is illustrated on a one-dimensional example and the error between the profiles issued from discontinuous and FE analyses is found to be of a few percents close to complete failure.
