In this paper we describe Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) using Petri nets, since Petri nets provide a powerful tool for modeling dynamical behavior of discrete concurrent processes. We deal with off-Line and on-Line rule-based scheduling of FMS. The role of the rule-base is to generate appropriate priority rule for resolving conflicts, that is, for selecting one of enabled transitions to be fired in a conflict set of the Petri nets. This corresponds to select a part type to be processed in the FMS. Towards developing more Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) we propose a conceptual framework of a futuristic intelligent scheduling system.
In [Z. Cai and B. C. Shin, SIAM J. Numer. Anal. 40 (2002), 307-318], we developed the discrete first-order system least squares method for the second-order elliptic boundary value problem by directly approximating $H(div){\cap}H(curl)-type$ space based on the Helmholtz decomposition. Under general assumptions, error estimates were established in the $L^2\;and\;H^1$ norms for the vector and scalar variables, respectively. Such error estimates are optimal with respect to the required regularity of the solution. In this paper, we study solution methods for solving the system of linear equations arising from the discretization of variational formulation which possesses discrete biharmonic term and focus on numerical results including the performances of multigrid preconditioners and the finite element accuracy.

A DEDS is a system whose stated change in response to the occurrence of events from a predefined event set. A major difficulty in developing analytical results for the system is the lack of appropriate modeling techniques. In this paper, we consider the modeling and control problem for Discrete Event Dynamic Systems(DEDS) in the Temporal Logic framework(TLF) which have been recently defined. The traditional TLF is enhanced with time functions for real time control of Discrete Event Dynamic Systems. A sequence of event which drive the system from a given initial state to a given final state is generated by pertinently operating the given plants. This paper proposes the use of Real-time Temporal Logic as a modeling tool for the analysis and control of DEDS. An given example of fixed-time traffic control problem is shown to illustrate our results with Real-time Temporal Logic Framework.

This paper describes the application of discrete event systems theory to the design of an automated laboratory system. Current automated laboratory systems typically consist of several interacting processes that must be carefully sequenced to avoid any possible process conflicts. Discrete Event Systems (DES) theory and Supervisory Control Theory (SCT) can be applied together as effective methods of modeling the system dynamics and designing supervisory controllers to precisely sequence the many processes that such systems might involve. Classical approaches to supervisory controller design tend to result in complex controller structures that are difficult to implement, maintain, and upgrade. In this paper, a new approach to designing supervisory controllers for automated laboratory systems is introduced. This new approach uses a modular controller structure that is easier to implement, maintain, and upgrade, and deals with "state explosion" issues in a novel and efficient way.

PLC(programmable Logic Controller)s essential components of modern automation systems encompassing almost every industry. Ladder Diagrams (LD) have been widely used in the design of such PLC since the LD is suitable for the modeling of the sequential control system. However, the synthesis of LD itself mainly depends on the experience of the industrial engineer, which may results in unstructured or inflexible design. Hence, in this paper, we propose a ladder diagram conversion algorithm which systematically produces LDs for PLCs based on discrete event models to enhance the structured and flexible design mechanism.

This paper investigates the robust nonlinear H$_{\infty}$ filter with FIR(Finite Impulse Response) structure for nonlinear discrete time-varying uncertain systems represented by the state-space model having parameter uncertainty. Firstly, when there is no parameter uncertainty in the system, the discrete-time nominal nonlinear H$_{\infty}$ FIR filter is derived by using the equivalence relationship between the FIR filter and the recursive filter, which corresponds to the standard nonlinear H$_{\infty}$ filter. Secondly, when the system has the parameter uncertainty, the robust nonlinear H$_{\infty}$ FIR filter is proposed for the discrete-time nonlinear uncertain systems.
This article describes the application of discrete event simulation in a process industry (coffee manufacturing) as a daily production-scheduling tool. A large number of end products (around 300), sporadic demand, and limited shelf life of coffee (90 days) make it difficult to generate feasible production schedules manually. To solve this problem, an integrated system was developed incorporating discrete event simulation methodology into scheduling process. The integrated system is comprised of two components: a scheduling program and a simulation model. The scheduling program is used to generate daily schedules for roasting, grinding, and packing coffee. The simulation model uses the generated schedules to simulate the production of coffee and regenerates a modified production schedule. In this paper, each of the components will be described in detail, evaluated in terms of performance factors, and validated with a set of real production data. Although this article focuses on a specific system, we will share our experiences and Intuitions gained and encourage other process industries to develop simulation-based scheduling tools.
In this paper, we consider a discrete time queueing system fed by a superposition of an ON and OFF source with heavy tail ON periods and geometric OFF periods and a D-BMAP (Discrete Batch Markovian Arrival Process). We study the tail behavior of the queue length distribution and both infinite and finite buffer systems are considered. In the infinite buffer case, we show that the asymptotic tail behavior of the queue length of the system is equivalent to that of the same queueing system with the D-BMAP being replaced by a batch renewal process. In the finite buffer case (of buffer size K), we derive upper and lower bounds of the asymptotic behavior of the loss probability as $K\;\longrightarrow\;\infty$.

Robust stability of discrete-time regulators which utilize state predictors to compensate computation delays is considered. Novel expressions for the return difference matrices and the complementary sensitivity matrices at the input and the output of the regulator are found to obtain simple bounds for unstructured perturbations. Robust stability for pertubations of the system matrix and /or the gain matrix is also considered. under certain restriction on the nominal system simple bounds for the pertubations are obtained directly from the characteristic equation. It is shown that as far as the effect of the computation delays concerns these bounds have explicit relation to those for the unstructured pertubations.

In this paper, a methodology for estimating the parameters of a discrete-time system and designing a digital PID controller based on the estimated model and a genetic algorithm is presented. To deal with optimization problems occurring regarding parameter estimation and controller design, a pseudo parallel genetic algorithm (PPGA) is used. The parameters of a discrete-time system are estimated using both the model technique and a PPGA. The digital PID controller is described by the pulse transfer function and its parameters are tuned based on both the model reference technique and another PPGA. A set of experimental works on two processes are carried out to illustrate the performance of the proposed method.
